  My first memory of her was from almost 50 years ago in the movie “9 to 5”. Starring Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, it was Dolly who was the heart of that movie.

  I always loved Dolly Parton. Remember watching her on telly as a kid in the 70s, I thought she was great. I have no idea why. It wasn't the figure, because I was too young to care. It certainly wasn't the music - hers was better than some but the procession of singers on the box bored me rigid. It wasn't the act, because singing acts are always faintly (or very) embarrassing. All that's left is ..... her. It was just something about her, that must have come out in the few words of interview before or after the song. That she turned out to be such a good person came as the least surprising thing I ever heard.

  I was deeply hoping it was just a rumor, like the last time. I almost picked up her record while I was in Chicago, but it didn’t have all the songs I wanted, so I ended up getting Donna Summer instead. Now I really wish I had bought it.

  This is sad. I didn't listen to a lot of her things, but she seemed really nice and I liked the performance of Jolene that she did at the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame with various other singers and enjoyed some songs on her last album "Rockstar".

  This one made me really sad. Like a part of my childhood dying. I'm also not a country music fan, but grew up listening to her and kenny rogers on family road trips. She had such a giving and beautiful soul ... Just warmed my heart anytime I heard her voice be it a song or an interview. So many children were influenced by her free books for kids program over the years as well.

  Saw her at a concert in Oakland, CA, in the 1980s. She was fabulous!! What a talent and a philanthropist. She is missed.

  I'm originally from Alabama, and have relatives in Tennessee, but I live on the west coast now. I'm headed back to Sevierville in a few weeks. People keep texting me today to tell me my Southern Queen has died 😔 The announcement video made me cry, and I'm not usually that type of person.

  If you're poorer and from the South, especially within a few hours of her hometown, you more than likely have a close feeling to Dolly and understand how great of an impact she had in that region. She revitalized it, mailed free books and sent kids to college, and truly made people feel like their dreams were achievable. She was so down to earth, accepted everyone, and was the epitome of class, even when people would mock how she looked in her younger years. Dorie Clark has even used Dolly several times in her seminars about her communication skills in public, and why they work. She is truly a southern treasure. 💔

  I didn’t know until just now - reading this thread. I’m really sad, she’s someone from my generation. She was a legend in talent, good will, strength and generosity and just a really good person from what I know. I’ve not really been a CW fan but loved her & much of her music. RIP Dolly
  I have wondered how it will feel to start losing the legends from my generation who changed culture and music.
