You ever eat food from a friend or family member and 5mins later it feels like there is a war being fought in your stomach?
My family shows love through food and I'm very picky about texture, so when someone makes me something, if it's something I absolutely don't eat, I will turn it down, but for the most part, as long as it isn't something I abhor, I will take a little and tell them it was great and then hit up Waffle House on the way home.
That's easy for me because I'm raw/vegan so I have an out long before I even arrive. I will eat cooked if it looks good, but only I know that. LOL
I have food allergies, so I generally make those known when people are asking for food preferences. I don't expect people to cater to my tastes and needs - but I do expect honest communication when I ask them. I've learned the hard way not to eat home baked goods without asking about ingredients AND really trusting the person (anaphylaxis in rush hour traffic with no epi pen is NOT fun, FYI).
If I'm attending an event with food, I always bring my own snacks as backup. That way I can eat what I can/like from the spread but not starve. And if someone ever asks why I'm not eating something, how honest I am with them depends on the degree of relationship: sometimes I'll tell them it's due to allergies, and sometimes I'll honestly tell them I'm a picky eater with sensitivities. 🤷🏻♀️
However, what I cannot stand is when someone pushes me, guilts me, or shames me over not eating a particular food. My food preferences and allergies are a hard boundary for me - I don't bend them to make someone else feel better. I will do my best to not inconvenience people and provide for myself, but I'm not going to eat something I can't/shouldn't just because of peer pressure. My physical and mental health is more important to me than someone's unreasonable expectations due to poor communication. When people truly care about their guests being able to enjoy the food, they ask about allergies to keep them safe and disclose menu/ingredients when asked, so it's rarely a problem with the people I choose to spend time with.
I have a ton of late in life food allergies so I bring my own food to things ... Prior to that I was good at the fold and tuck the plate into the trash can method.. and if not using paper I'd get creative with my napkin covering the plate..and discreetly scrap it off into the trash using the napkin before it goes to the sink
