The Characters Of The Different US States

Ok fellow Cuddle Enthusiasts bear with me for a moment...

So, in advance of my planned trip around the US in May of 2020 I would like to get a shorthand idea of the different "characters" of the different States.

So I am not asking about the characters in your state but instead "If your State were a person, what sort of character would he or she have?".

Bearing in mind that there are no right or wrong answers and I will be equally grateful for any responses that I get.

For instance, the city of Melbourne, Australia, where I live, is a bipolar, boutique-beer-drinking hipster.

    Arizona: a softer and somewhat friendly Yosemite Sam.

    North Dakota:

    A morbidly obese middle-aged man clad in camouflage and a MAGA hat. He grips a rifle in one hand and a Bible in the other.

    When he opens his mouth one can see that few teeth remain in his maw; little blackened stumps are all that are left after years of meth usage, and an even longer time chewing tobacco.

    He complains about the weather. He complains about the foreigners who are ruining his state. When he talks about his truck, or the deer he recently shot, one can see his doughy face burning red, noisome sweat makes his skin glisten, and he wheezes in ecstasy. He criticizes the Native Americans in their reservations for all of the traits that he exhibits, while also claiming to be proud of having 1/18th Native blood.

    He spends most of his monthly EBT funds on Dot’s Pretzles and Mello Yellow, while judging those who rely upon the government for aid—harshly. On Sunday, he wears a cheap suit that he bought at Walmart to church. Him and his wife have six kids of low to moderate intelligence, and they dream of going to NDSU to play football for the Bison. They scream and sputter “BISON NATION” whenever the team enters their mind.

    He has a massive truck that guzzles fuel, and thinks that a man driving anything else is indicative of homosexuality. There’s an American flag decal on the back window, and on the bumper there’s a sticker that reads “How much does abortion cost? ONE HUMAN LIFE.”

    That is North Dakota.

    @HappinessHenry Better get a geography book old boy. The Badlands are in southwestern South Dakota.

    Thanks FC @FunCartel I could get lost in Walmart so a tour of the US may prove quite the challenge for me.

    Trying to be equally precise, in my book at least "Ole boy" has more of a Southern gent allusion, as in Good Ole Boy. Which I will definitely take if you were offering.

    Otherwise if you were more going for posh English it would definitely be "Old Boy".

    @HoneyBooBoo If you ever get out to the oil boom towns (not so booming now) of North Dakota it is more hellish than what hobgoblin described. Yes, it can be perceived from the outside as stereotypical, but as someone who goes all over the place in this country for the last 20+ years his description is pretty spot on.

    I hate stereotypes. If you are travelling among the states, I'd advise keeping an open mind and taking each as it comes together with the infinite variety of people you'll find there.

    Yes, stereotypes are rather lack luster. ? I love the NW, the culture, so diverse in foods and nature of all types in range of adventuring... Depends on your focus on your travels. You'll find wonderful things and people all over.

    Doubtful. I don’t really like people all that much. I’d use similar language if I were describing California, or Texas—which are two other states I’ve lived in.

    Would my descriptors be perfectly accurate? Of course not. But if you’re so very concerned about places being distilled into a single character perfectly, maybe you should look outside this thread. Or just stop looking—it’s an impossible task.

    Hey @HoneyBooBoo My bad, if there is any! I asked people to characterize/stereotype States. That was always going to be reductionist.

    If the question is really getting up your nose (or other part part of your anatomy, HBB, I will ask The Mod to take it down, pronto!).
