I've been writing stupid little stories for my entire life. As a child, these were largely inspired by the media I obsessed over: Terminator 2 had a huge impact upon my seven-year-old mind, as did Tom Savini's remake of Night of the Living Dead. I discovered the works of Edgar Allan Poe at nine, but didn't fully comprehend them—my main takeaway was that it was neat to hide dead people in odd places, and that black animals (mainly ravens and cats) were to be feared.
I didn't watch many cartoon shows. However, I absolutely adored the Rankin/Bass adaption of The Hobbit, and would often listen to the song "Down, Down, to Goblin Town" (I kept the VHS wound to the scene where the goblins accosted Bilbo and the dwarves). I thought the Goblin King from Labyrinth was some kind of deity. I'd also re-watch the fight scene between Chun-Li and Vega from the Street Fighter 2 anime over and over. The brawl was way past cool, and the song that played ("Ultra", by KMFDM) amazed me—it was unlike anything I'd ever heard. That was my introduction to post-industrial.
As you might have guessed, I didn't receive much parental supervision. My elementary school teachers were impressed by my literacy, and more than a little taken aback by the stories that I wrote.
