Psssst...

Pssst...

Listen, I know that our “culture” really romanticizes the lone wolf, independent, don’t need anyone, do it yourself, tough it out super hero thing...

I get it.

But, hear me out, it’s totally wrong.

If it is only you against the world you can only last for so long.

The REAL struggle is in learning that we all need help.

Even you.

Even me.

The true challenge is in ASKING.

Reach out.

Say please.

Express your vulnerability, and ask for help, from someone.

From anyone.

From everyone.

There is no shame in being human.

We literally evolved because of our ability to help one another.

Because, seriously, Me vs the Lion equals a well fed Lion. (It’s a miracle Daniel survives the Lion’s Den, right? Whole point of that Fable, yes?)

And I promise you, you will find the help.

Don’t get me wrong, you will also find other overwhelmed humans who can’t or won’t.

Some truly struggling, hurting people will mock you, insult you, belittle you for your vulnerability.

You have to learn that that is their struggle, their journey, and isn’t about you.

And here is the thing...

Once you find those amazing humans that can and do help you, you must become one of those people.

And, remember the ones who were hurting so badly they couldn’t help, or wouldn’t.

Go back for them.

Ask them what help they need.

Maybe they are ready, maybe not.

But the point is YOU ARE.

And THAT is how we make this world better.

(No one said it was easy, or simple. I’m only saying that it works.)

  • I understand what you are trying to say, but you set it up as an either/or argument. Life is far more complicated than that. The cookie cutter method does not work for everyone. Anyone in the trenches in the mental health field like my ex-gf who is a clinical psychiatrist will tell you that. It is a false claim and depends on everyone being the same at their core and we are not as much as everyone and the movies would like to believe. So while you have good intentions, you are overreaching.

This actually made me feel better. Thank you.

Beautiful and well said. Thank you for sharing.

"Pssst! Hey! Over here! You—yes, you! You're not actually supposed to do everything on your own."

    [ruefully]
A thing it would do me good to be told every so often. Thanks, Charles.

  • Thanks a lot !! Awesome

  • So very true! I am great at taking care of others (hence being a pro) but i am terrible of taking care of myself. I appreciate the reminder that it is ok to reach out, as my natural reaction to my own problems is to withdraw.

  • @tarasloth I understand where you're coming from. I am a nurturing caring person who wants to care for others before I care for myself. However, I've learned through painful experience that if you don't care for yourself, it's not easy to care for others.

  • I love how an righteous inspirational message gets censored for a "swear word" 😇

  • @Brailleangel self care is one of my biggest challenges. I am very conscious of my repeated failure to master this lifeskill. I am trying tho!

  • @biancalovecraft I would surmise that the same TOS that pros like to wrap themselves in on their profiles also covers language. In short, you can’t cherry pick based on your preference at the time.

Good point @CharlesTwisted . And a better point of Daniel in the lions den would have served well door the point you are trying to make. That if we are faithful to the God who wants to be the One we lean on in our times of need, he will come thru. Even Daniel knew he needed Someone.

@creedhands: ...It wouldn't have made the point better for me. I'd rather rely on myself—but if I can't do everything myself (which I can't), I'd prefer to rely on someone I can actually see, hear, touch, and all the rest of it.

God sent an angel to shut the mouths of the lions. An angel is able to be seen, heard and touched.

Good for the angels, then. And just as soon as I meet one, I'll be sure to ask for a cuddle. Even if it does happen to have a number of different animal heads and/or a lot of eyes in strange places.

  • I keep trying to ask for help. Everybody leaves me. Or gets bored of me. It's been that way my whole life. No matter how good I do, I still feel the same and still "need" somebody.

  • Amen, friend.
