Is a discussion thread subscribable based on subject, poster, viewership, commentary or a combination of some or all of the above?

I think you have to post on it, to get the "unsubscribe" option.

The question being asked is: how do the site moderators decide which discussion threads can be silenced by those who don't wish to see them and be subscribed to by those who do?
What qualities or characteristics in the threads themselves or the responses to the threads or the individuals who post the threads or all or a combination of the above that qualifies a thread for an asterisk?
That's the question being asked.
It may be a dumb nonsensical question to ask. But a question none the less.
The only questions worth asking are the ones certain others are interested in hearing the answers to. Those of us who don't matter dare not ask questions that ring uncomfortable truths for the most important certain others who do.
That's just one of the many paradoxes no one ever wants to address.
There are many that don't matter who don't mind one bit.
And when you don't matter your questions are seen as dumb nonsensical crap. After all that's exactly what you and your life is to the certain others that always do matter.
I think that every thread is subscribed to by everyone, by default. Once you have contributed ( and maybe also if tagged ), the thread gets the pale blue "gear wheel" symbol, which allows you to unsubscribe.
I think that unsubscribe takes it off the list of thrreads you can see, but there may be a way to undo that.
Again the question is: what qualifies in the site administrators/ moderators book one discussion thread being labelled with an asterisk as against another?
Not all threads are given the asterisked option of something a member can subscribe or unsubscribe to. Only some.
The question being asked is: why?

@Bles Find a thread without a blue asterisk, add a comment, then open the thread again, and you will find the asterisk has appeared.
It simply means that you have commented in the thread if it shows an asterisk. No real existential reasoning behind it
Actually not really. Two threads have been observed where this poster didn't comment or view. Yet the grey asterisk sits beside it. And others where this poster has viewed and there is none.
@Bles Simply viewing a thread doesn't trigger the asterisk. I managed to trigger it by posting a comment.
I'm not sure if being tagged on a thread triggers it, because I can't tag myself.

If you want to subscribe to a thread such that you get notices when someone posts, you can bookmark it by clicking on the star to the right of the thread's title. It'll also show up under your My Bookmarks.
Yeah, so three types of actions here:
(1) Manual subscribing using the bookmark star icon to the right of the threat's title. (2) Automatic subscribing based on your settings (Menu > Settings > Notifications > Forum Notifications). (3) Manual unsubscribing of specific topics as a result of (2). This is found next to the bookmark star icon.
So the Unsubscribe button will only show if you are already receiving notifications for a topic as a result of your settings. Whether you are subscribed to a topic is not something we as moderators choose for you.
