When a vaccine becomes available for Covid-19 will you take it?

Just wondering on the thought here when a legitimate vaccine appears, whether or not you would be willing to take it? And let's just say; you decline, and I take it, what might be the risk in our contact going forward? How will the pandemic be eradicated, if people refuse to get vaccinated? I'm concerned in the first wave, and a rush to get a product marketed, there will be people walking around like in Michael Jackson's Thriller video.

  • The WHO says the pandemic won't end even with the vaccine and be prepared for mask wearing and social distancing for many years. :'(

  • The risk in the scenario you describe depends of what the vaccine does to your immune system. If makes you impervious to the disease, you don't then you wouldn't have to worry about catching it from someone that may have it, and you wouldn't transmit it either.

If it just makes it so that you can still get sick but not end up in the ICU for it then an unvaccinated person would potentially be at risk from you but not you from them.

We'll just have to see what comes out of those clinical trials.

  • Most current vaccines prevent people catching, suffering from, and passing on ; the relevant illness. They give the protective benefits of having the illness. I'd have something on that basis, as I already have for many other illnesses.

If it is less useful, or more risky, then it probably wouldn't be approved.

If having the illness gave some measurable benefit, such as being immune for a substantial time, and hence permitted close contact with other people ; I might be happy to be deliberately exposed and then quarantined ; as people used to have "chickenpox parties".

The disease is bad, because it is easily spread by un/pre-symptomatic people, and healthcare systems struggle with high numbers of infected people. Choosing the time and place to catch it, avoids many of its effects.

  • I'll be camping out (black Friday style) in the center of my 6x6 tent for that vaccine!!!

I had Influenza B in March and felt near death for days. There were multiple times I was wishing it had been Covid because my symptoms were so bad (104° plus for 4 straight days, unable to walk, constant shuttering/teeth chattering chills & unexpectedly blacking out multiple times a day - a fricken nightmare!) After a week or so I developed pneumonia and pertussis (yay for adding vomiting to the mix) and also had a month long bout of acute bronchitis. It was nearly a month and a half of severe lung related issues one after the other!

This year, for the first time, I'll be getting a flu shot ~ I didn't before because I thought I'd experienced the flu and was thinking, "Meh - the flu isn't that bad..." Whoa was I ever way off!

From here on out, I'll be doing whatever it takes to avoid anything like that from happening again and will be in line for any/all lung related illness vaccines that become available!!!

  • @quixotic_life - I'd take any experimental drug if it meant I could hug people again.

I've never been sick for over 10 years even being in close contact with those who were. I must have a strong immune system.

Hell no. And I would not be willing to take any vaccine, corona or otherwise.

  • Another potential benefit of forced catching, is that one way of currently treating the disease, is by using antibodies from someone who's had it. That offers a way for people with no medical qualifications at all, to actively help fight the disease ; rather than merely passively fighting it, by breaking transmission chains.

Unfortunately, the strongest immune response, is associated with the most severe symptoms ; so the most help, is from those who suffer the most.

  • Already signed up to be one of the first testers! Anything to see people again!

  • @geoff1000 ~ Yay! Then my suffering could actually have purpose (because every time I get sick it's severe)! Now to figure out how I sign up and cash in on it (as a way to make up for lost wages - not because I'm looking to profit).

  • I wouldn't get it right off the bat. Normally, vaccines and medications take years of development and trials before they hit the market. I would be afraid that this vaccine may be rushed to market without as much scrutiny as would normally be given to new vaccines, at least in part due to the politisation of the vaccine to help a certain orange haired candidate get re-elected if a vaccine comes out before election day (even if it may be a sub-par vaccine).

  • Hell no! The virus that has a less then half a percent death rate for people in my age group scares me far less then some vaccine rushed to market by the likes of Fauci, Billy Gates and the WHO. Billy Gates has openly made statements of using vaccines to curb the world's population, and has crippled and left many girls in India infertile through his vaccine program over there. Months ago some of my cousins tested positive for Coronavirus and I had contact with them and developed the same symptoms they had, but I never got tested. Couldn't see the point. For me and them it was no worse then any regular flue. My advice, (unless you have a compromised immune system) forget the masks and the vaccine. Go live life fearlessly. If you're immune system is bad, eat healthy and exercise to build it up. If you catch corona quarantine for 2 weeks. Catching it and developing immunity to it will break the transmission chain. That's the way humans have developed immunity for thousands of years.

  • @cuddleutopia - Even if you don't get sick, you'll still be a carrier of the disease and spread it to somebody who may not be as lucky. It isn't about you.

Forgetting the masks is exactly what spreads it to those who are at risk of major illness and death. That's not living life fearlessly. A virus doesn't care about your bravery . That's putting others at risk which is selfish, careless, and plain dumb

  • @pmvines
There are to my people on this planet anyway! We are overpopulated! This might be the virus that will thin out the herd!!

  • Yikes! @cuddlybear998 ! Are you serious?!

I don't know about you, but I feel I'm irreplaceable and that there are people who would be greatly impacted (in a negative way) by my absence.

As a person in an "at risk" population, I feel like your supercilious attitude puts people like myself at greater risk for exposure, and while saying this virus might "thin the herd" may be well received by those who know you, in this space, I find it to be incredibly insensitive and appalling.

By having that attitude and approach you're essentially stating that you're a sociopath looking for cuddles ~ a paradox one would be wise to avoid meeting up with.

    Pass!

  • @pmvines that could have always been said in history, factoring in every other flue that has ever existed. So using that reasoning humans always should have wore masks.

  • @cuddleutopia - COVID-19 isn't an influenza virus. It's a corona virus. Corona viruses are what causes the common cold. You know what makes the cold so common? You can keep getting it over and over and over again. Unlike the flu, I have doubts a COVID-19 vaccine will be anyone close to as effective.

  • Me personally, if the data shows the vaccine is safe and effective, yes I will take it. Another way I see it too is that I won't even be able to get it at first because its going to go to healthcare workers first. And by the time I'm allowed to get it if there's any bad side effects than they would've been found by then

  • @quixotic_life - That guy is a troll. He blocked me and I never messaged him before.

    @quixotic_life
I am not a sociopath! It's not like I unleashed this virus on plant! My point that I was making is that are species is overpopulated. Compared to the other animals on this planet. How we bring war, death, hurt, pain, suffering, and destruction to this planet and others. We are going to be running out of food, fresh water, land to live, and other things we need to live. I'm not saying that life isn't precious and not worth fighting for. You must live in a bubble or something. There has been other diseases/viruses that had affected other animals and plants. It had killed most or all of them off. What did we do for them? Nothing! Agree to disagree.

    Facts not feelings!!

I will say it again. I am not a sociopath!

  • @cuddlybear998 - By the time that happens, we will have terraformed Mars.

    @Mike403 😂
Yeah, who ever can afford a ticket! You would have to be a billionaire! It would be like the movie 2012 with John Cusack.
I'm not a troll. I block most people by some of the comments. Men and women.

  • No @cuddleutopia itd not the same . I am not going to list for you all the reasons why . Your mind is made up. Keep promoting not practicing safety til your heart is content you obviously don't feel it is a big deal

So long as it's been properly tested I don't see why not.

Also... @cuddlybear998 as for overpopulation while I agree that it's an issue worth talking about and I'm sure many people here will be on the same page up to that point - suggesting it's a good thing that a virus is wiping out a bunch of people because it'll help with that issue maybe wasn't the best thing to do. Even if it might be the case that such a thing will end up being better long term for humanity and the planet, celebrating it and talking about it the way you did is not alright - and that's a fact.

  • @Zundar
Yeah. I want celebrating that there is this virus. It's like they say. A person can interpret a text anyway they want. If we were talking in person. It would sound so differently than in text.

  • @Mike403 I've been a big fan of The Who since I was a child several decades ago and I don't recall them ever saying that.

  • @cuddlybear998 ~ Out of curiosity (since you're my first known to me blocker) did you block me because of my comments on your earlier post here, or was it something else I said that you found objectionable?

I'm glad you believe you aren't a sociopath. Most who are probably don't think they are or, lacking empathy, just don't care.

I'm just calling like I see it... and letting you know how your words were received and interpreted by me alone. Perhaps consider writing in ways that can "capture" your tone or add in some emojis next time...? 🤷‍♀️ Also proofread, because in your last comment you used the word, "want" but I think you may have meant to use, "wasn't"? Two very different messages there...

Honestly though, I sincerely hope that you going about the world without taking advised precautions doesn't catch up to you (by this virus seriously infecting someone who can trace it back to you, or infecting you or someone important to you). For the majority of people, this feeling of putting others' wellbeing above their own is common and valued (actively modeling empathy and concern for others are also inherently non-sociopathic characteristics).

While I appreciate that our species has over-run the planet ~ it seems like a few better means for "thinning the herd" than an indiscriminate virus is through education, working to build people's social emotional resiliency and feelings of worth (thereby increasing the positive ways they interact with others and their awareness of the impacts their actions can have so they'll actually think through their options and make better choices), making contraception and abortions available without stigma, and an overhaul of the current adoption and foster systems.

These are only my opinions. Feel free to try and change my mind. I used to be pro-death penalty but have done a 180° turn on that one... So you never know... Although this thread may not be the best place for it, unless the OP ( @DreamSweet ) is fine with it happening here...

And, Yes! I do live in a bubble. It's an intentional choice I made to lower the impact my generalized anxiety was having on me and in turn, those around me. But by no means am I unaware. I just choose to not let politically driven fear mongering tactics and capitalist driven media machines to have the influence they used to, and I trust that through thoughtful exchanges of ideas and debate, I will land within an acceptable range of beliefs, principles and convictions that align and "feel" right to me.

  • @spuds - lol. I'm talking about the World Health Organization.
