I am a fan of dogs, cats, foxes, deer, mink, etc etc etc. I do not personally keep any pets though.

A dog will give its owner unconditional love, whereas a cat requires you to earn its love. Which to my mind makes the cat infinitely more desirable.
@CharlesThePoet yes, dogs already know how to be dogs, but they don't innately know how to do what humans want or expect them to be able to do, hence the need for training.
I've seen some 'cat-like' dogs and 'dog-like' cats .
Cats do seem to be generally lower maintenance, so at the current moment in time, if I had to pick between one of the two, I'd pick cat. Even though dogs are great, I feel it's just too much responsibility at the current moment for me.
I got this guy neutered and he does not like his cone of shame.

Even though I basically grew up on a farm, we didn't have "pets" per se... dogs protected the place and cats were in the barn; just recently there's a dog at my mom's place. Personally, the closest that I've been to having a pet was when I had a roommate in grad school - spent a lot of time cleaning after him... and visiting Vietnam gave me a different point of view how one would 'enjoy' a dog over there... yikes.

@Amortentia no, most zoos aren't really my thing. There is one in New Zealand that I might be okay with but I think I would be better at a rescue or doggy daycare or something.
Wow. Interesting. Well, hate to break your bubble of assumptions about all dogs but my dog is extremely well behaved, doesn’t bark unless there’s a good reason, doesn’t drool or chew things up or jump all over people, doesn’t care about toys, loves to cuddle quietly, and has amazingly soft, curly hair. He’s basically a four-legged human. Most badly behaved dogs simply lack training. But it’s worth noting I also love cats and they’re way more my personality, but my immune system doesn’t like their dander. And many of them are total brats that are also destructive. So. We can all find things to complain about.
It really depends on the dog. I have two dogs one is very awkward and stands on you when you try to cuddle and doesn’t really know how to be still and close and cuddly. The other one is really lazy and chill, she has a fat potato body with stumpy little legs and she is just perfect to cuddle with, she also has really soft fur and makes the cutest little rotten noises. I often have cats try to climb bite when I try to pet and they tend to run away, while my dogs always want to be near me and cuddle me me.
I like dogs or cats. It's all in the way you marinate them.

I used to be a Paper Boy for the San Francisco Chronical Newspaper. Dogs used to always chase me away from the houses on my paper route. I got bit by one dog while I was collecting. These traumatic experiences with dogs are the reason why I like cats rather then dogs.

@exitstageright I got bit by a dog before too in a similar situation as you. I gotta say that I prefer cats more too. My bruise from the dog lasted like 6 months. No joke. I was worried by leg would never be normal again.

I prefer not to have pets, but I do like this one that I get to hang out with occasionally. She runs great, very attentive when we drive, and cuddles a little.
