I was at a bar which had self serve machines where you pour your own beer and pay by the ounce. The machine asked me to add a tip. Who am I tipping? The guy who changed the keg?

Restaurant employees work for tips. Tipping pro cuddlers is up to you. I'm talking about receiving service from a machine where no human was involved.

Yes absolutely. Tipping culture in the US is absurd to begin with. I do tip wait staff well, because of the nature of how they're compensated and social expectations, but the fact that this is how it works rather than just paying them a reasonable wage is ridiculous.
And the fact that people are trying to expand the same stupid tipping culture to other areas is infuriating. I honestly think most aspects of tipping culture should be illegal. Companies should be required to tell you upfront how much something actually costs, rather than giving you a fake low price and then exerting social pressure to get you to pay more.
If you've ever listened to anyone who drives for DoorDash or a similar delivery service, many of them are full of commentary and complaints about customers' tipping practices, often refusing to deliver for customers who don't tip sufficiently well. I find the whole thing beyond idiotic. DoorDash should be required to tell people a real delivery fee upfront, and if they choose to pay it, the food should be delivered, end of story. Why in the world should the customer be required to guess what an appropriate tip is? And how is it a "tip" if it's literally required to get your food?
Pro cuddlers getting a tip is the equivalent to a to go order?
With the exception of pizza places, you should still tip for to go orders(10%) because somebody still has to bag it up.

Someone has to do work for every purchase anyone makes. When I buy a used car, someone washed it, inspected it, maybe fixed some problems, delivered it to the lot. Should I tip the car lot? In your example of a machine-dispensed beer, yeah, someone built the machine, someone maintains it, cleans it, fills it when empty, etc. Should you tip the bar? When someone pays for a monthly Netflix subscription, a ton of people put a lot of work into creating the shows they watch, and building an online platform for them to be delivered. Should they tip Netflix?
@CuddleWho - They are paid more. Restaurant staff works for tips. I dont agree with it, but that's how it's set up in the U.S. That same waiter who is there to serve tables also has to bag up your food and bring it to you.
Tips should be a bonus for when a worker has gone above and beyond their expected job. If your server at a restaurant is polite, quick, and spot on with your order, refills, etc.? Tip away! It shouldn't be expected. Restaurants should just pay their workers fairly to begin with, imo. Fast food does it, why can't regular restaurants?

I've seen people leave a religious tract which is more insulting than not leaving anything.
i do tip as much as I can especially at restaurants, facials, massage, valet, carwash workers and sometimes at Starbucks drive through when I see they are really busy. on occasion if i get fast food If they are busy I do try to give them a little something as well. Im not tipping them crazy amounts, but when I make enough money to "over" tip people who are doing a great job and putting their all into what they do I'd love to make their day better with a little more.
On the other hand, if someone presses a few buttons and then the screen pops up i happily and shamelessly press the "no tip" option.
My original post was about tipping what was essentially a vending machine that sold alcohol, so I guess drunk people like to waste money. shrug.
I may be totally wrong here, but I think the tip functionality is built into every POS system since how it’s deployed isn’t going to be the same everywhere.
@Charlie_Bear - It was a touch screen built into the beer dispenser. You would think it would have their own firmware and not using some generic one meant for restaurants.
In regards to to go tips, I do because the same staff who get paid 3 dollars an hour are often the same people who put together yo hr orders, though I dont tip as much . Plus all the to go orders are replacing in house dining, so less opportunity for tips if to go customers arent doing it. You saw this with covid where everybody was getting carry out so people didnt make nearly as much as a result of lack of tips.
When I was in high school, I worked at a Denny's type restaurant. The waitress is made waitress minimum wage. Totally different than minimum wage. The hostess made minimum wage or more. The hostess for the cashier would bag up the to go order, so I never tip to go orders.
Before I had my knees replaced I had really bad arthritis in my knees and could not do stairs. Same for my father he does not do stairs. So I have groceries delivered. I have no problem tipping if they bring it up to the second floor where I'm at. When they leave it at the wrong address down below, I don't tip.
Food delivery orders I only use cash because I had one come three hours late and I had to fight for my money back. There are times I don't wanna even come to the front door so by paying cash for the tip and the bill I'm not out of money if they don't come up.
I also use cash for all tips. If they do a good job, I'll tip extra and with cash it's not taxed verses on a credit card or a debit card because it's recorded.
I don't tip at coffee shops, where there is not an actual waitress versus a barista, which is making more money than a waitress. Unless somebody goes out of way.
If I go to the same establishment often, I will talk to the employees and see how they get paid and such. I try to make sure they get compensated if they are good works.
@Mike403 haha I would expect as little money as possible being spent by the vendor on making them more specialized
@pmvines - Now a days, people are ordering through Grubhub, DoorDash, or another third party delivery service. The delivery drivers aren't expected to tip them. I tip if it's my food, but not if I'm bringing it to someone else. (I do Grubhub on the weekends)
@Charlie_Bear - I'm surprised the self checkout stand at the grocery store doesn't ask for a tip.
Tipping is so ingrained in US culture at restaurants, maybe they are hoping some people will tip by default. Possibly goes to the servers and they split the total at the end of a shift amongst themselves. Or maybe it all goes to the owner.
Tipping culture is ridiculous. Tipping shouldn't exist. Everyone at every job has periods of peak rush time. If someone is being employed by someone else, that someone else should be responsible for paying them. That said, I tip well (20% for average service) just because it is pretty much expected in certain occupations, and not in others, which doesn't make sense, but that is how the society is working right now. Hopefully it will change. Some might argue that if everyone refused to tip, society would change that way - servers would stop serving, uber drivers would stop ubering etc.. until the pay catches up.

Leaving a religious pamphlet IS worse than not leaving a tip. Makes me think of people who go to church every week but won't offer to give someone a ride to the doctor when they know that person can't drive. A machine designed to ask for a tip is insulting.
@achetocuddle - I've seen religious tracts that looks like a $20 bill when it's folded up and they think they got a good tip until they take it and it turns out to be a worthless tract.

The only correct answer is yes, specifically because of what the OP mentioned. Tip options have been added to so many non service related things.

Tip culture is inherently racist and perpetuating slave culture. I love going out to eat but I also love to see short-staffed restaurants because the workers have caught on to this. (In before I don’t tip well-I do.)
