Mother opossums do not come back for their babies.
If a baby opossum is over 7 inches long (thats about 2 in longer than a dollar bill and this is not including the tail) and appears healthy, has no injuries, and doesn't have visible parasites, you can leave it alone. The baby should also be active, not walking in circles or falling over. Under 7 inches, it will need a wildlife rehabilitator.

I had the job of catching multiple cats, getting them fixed, and finding them homes. I caught a couple of wild cats (feral cats that definitely were males that looked like and acted like they were ready to kill me), and a couple of possums. This is one of them. He really tried to get out, because he had some blood on him, and then when I opened the cage, he played possum and wouldn’t move. He didn’t realize he was free and stayed in there a few more hours. We feed some of our scraps to wildlife, including the possums. One night I almost reached down to rub my cat on the patio, but I remembered she was inside. It was a possum!!!
Possums have 13 nipples! That's what I know about the critters. It's true.
