Drank too much last night and I’m so hungover at work today. How do you guys usually keep yourselves awake at work when your mind is too tired?
Talk someone’s ear off the whole time, vent, talk a lot about yourself.
@TxTom silly guy, you shouldn’t talk while someone is trying to work. That is distracting
I dont drink but am usually pretty tired in the mornings . Sometimes you just have to hydrate, drink lots.of caffeine , take some pain pills and get through it . And be a responsible adult and don't drink too much on a work night
Pho usually does wonders if you drank too much.
Also toast and something kinda greasy should help settle the stomach
@pmvines if you wake up tired in the mornings you should consider a sleep study to make sure there are no underlying issues! But yes I should be more responsible next time
True true
Something greasy might be the move for me. Haven’t had Wendys in a while.. this situation calls for a Dave’s Double!
@sunnysideup menudo as well
The thing that really worries me about this question is the fact that you've asked it, which suggests that you're not getting enough practice at being hungover at work. Who the hell wants to have a hangover on your own time, rather than the company's time? Having said that, of course you must be fit and capable to work but the details of that vary wildly with the job and the person.
Anyway, as a highly experienced expert on this one, the full standard cure is this:
maximum legal dose of your favourite painkillers
keep drinking water until the local tv news starts talking about unexplained shortages in your area
tea, coffee, juice, milk - any and all liquids are good
eat protein and starch: full English breakfast is best if you can manage it, but don't force yourself to eat until you're ready. Pho would be perfect, hot buttered toast is excellent. At the very least try and eat a salty snack: you should be drinking enough water that you need a little salt to keep your electrolyte balance. Sugar and vegetable matter will not do you any good.
2-3 sips of strong alchohol: spirits or fortified wine. (Yes this is real, evidence-based advice, not just an old wives' tale.) If you're your going to put it in some sort of pick-me-up then follow the recipe, you need more if it's diluted like that. Do not touch beer or regular wine.
wait. 3 hours - 3 days
Not every point helps every person, you need to experiment to find what works best with you. what does work may change with age or the nature of last night's nectar.
As for staying awake, you can help yourself by picking the right task if you have a choice. Cheap psychological tricks can help too, like setting yourself very short-term targets with small but tangible rewards. But in the end of the day it's pure mental discipline: either you choose to stay awake, or you don't.
I stopped getting hungover years ago. When I do drink which really isn’t often now a days, I generally only drink bourbon. I drink it neat and stick to the same thing. I’m a bit of a liquor snob so I generally only drink higher quality stuff. My personal experience is that I only feel bad the next day if I do at least one of the following things:
Drink Wine Drink several different types of liquor Drink lesser quality liquor Don’t eat Don’t sleep enough
If I do feel a little funny the next day, I just eat and hydrate but I hydrate slowly. I don’t like to pound a bunch of water.
As a bartender, I suggest for every glass of alcohol, drink a glass of water. Dehydration and sugar in the drinks cause the hangover. It also helps to find out if you might be allergic or have intolerance to a certain beverage, that can also be a cause to feeling hungover, even if you didn’t drink much. Wow, I sound like I am speaking from experience. 😂
Seconded. Drink a glass of water between drinks. You'll still get drunk if that's your goal you will just feel less dead the next morning.

Thirded. Also the point about the quality of the booze being an important consideration - it is.
Before a really big night I used to line up 3 pints of water on the kitchen counter, with painkillers in between them. When I came in later, I wasn't allowed to go to bed until I'd consumed the lot. That really helped.
Oh, and have as much hangover-punished fun as you can when you're young. Once you're past about 40 .... it ain't so easy.
Very smart @CuddleDuncan .
@CuddleDuncan it’s probably not easier but I definitely make wiser decisions now that I’m an old man of 52.
I recommend you fall asleep on the job, get written up, and make better decisions tonight. 😏

Drink fluid or some thing with electrolytes. If possible, go to the washroom and close your eyes for a few minutes to get a power nap. Or somewhere to get a power nap. Time is the only big way to cure a hangover.
I heard about this product and thought it was interesting. I’ve never tried it so no clue whether it works or not. It’s endorsed by Ed Mylett who is well know in the business and self improvement circle.

@Bear That's what they do in Hungover Park.
@SunsetSnuggles thank you for recommending that! My cat would not be happy if I got written up though, so maybe next time I’ll try it 🙂
Thank you for everybody else’s input. It was interesting to read people’s takes! I will make better decisions next week 🫡
