Middle School

What are some of your fond memories of middle school? I remember the following:

Recording songs off the radio with a cassette tape. It wouldn’t be until later that I would upgrade to a Sony Walkman

I remember trapper keepers and pee chee folders and having to cover my text books with that brown paper

I remember most girls were wanna madonnas with their big hair and used so much hair spray but looked good!

The music was exceptional at the time with Duran Duran U2 Depeche Mode and so many more

Would go to the arcade after school to play the classics

Would watch videos on MTV

Never did the moonwalk or breakdance but those were popular

I remember our book clubs and this one magazine called dynamite that I used to get

Had a Rubik’s cube of course

And of course watched movies on VHS

@lonelytauros Yep, trapper keepers, and Caboodles. At my school, we had a little shop and I liked to buy cute shaped erasers. I kept an a little elf laying on its belly forever. It was orange. So cute!

I remember the original Resident Evil came out on the PlayStation and it was the first scary game I played and it was sooooo good.

There also giant pizza slices at lunch and frozen lemonade. So good.

@CharlieBear do you still remember that dog, crashing through the window? I think that was the first time I ever jumped in a video game. lol

Small town, so no middle school for me, just k-8 and 9-12. But if I'd had a middle school, I'm sure I would have hated it. (For why, see the first couple of words from this post)

Okay, I was homeschooled and we didn't have "middle school", so I just had to Google what age that constitutes. 🤣 Survey says: 11 to 14. Those were certainly not my happiest years.

My most carefree memories come from more around age 8. Things like Lisa Frank stickers, writing in a Hello Kitty diary, Barbie horses, running through the sprinklers, playing on our swingset, riding bikes, rollerblading, sledding, walking around barefoot in mountain streams...

Back to 11 to 14...I remember those years mostly for feeling isolated, hating my body, dealing with my parents fighting, and not feeling that I had any privacy or rights.

On the positive end, I did get on the internet at 14, and that opened up a social world that I had been carefully isolated from. I also read books voraciously during those years, hundreds per year. I got my Australian Shepherd puppy. We moved to the mountains.

But there was no "school" experience, almost no 3-D social contact whatsoever, and it was a rather damaging time in my formative years. Sorry to be less than 80's neon in such a fun thread, but yeah...my much younger years are the ones I definitely look back on more fondly.

Scrunchies.... Sweatshirts falling off your shoulders... leg warmers... Tiffany... The 10 o'clock TV commercial that announced "It's 10pm, do you know where your children are?"... Fearing quicksand around every corner... The trauma of Artax dying... Thinking Mario Bros was the peak of technology... Big hair.... Watching TGIF with the fam... The excitement of going to Blockbuster... Smoking was allowed in schools (not middle)... Parents getting mad at over-stretched phone cords... Beastie Boys... Walkmans...

Fighting everyday in the locker room before gym or after school, playing quarter basketball at lunch and freestyling, making teachers cry and quit because no one liked english class, arguing with the science teacher, talking more about each other than assignments
And one fine fine fine fine fine fine fine teacher that Id is work for, listened to, never got in trouble for and would defend with my last bit of oxygen. And of course the wannabe joe clark vp that we made fun of when he wasnt around and ran in fear from when we heard his stacey adams clicking down the hallway. Found so many hiding places running from that dude.
I was definitely setting myself up for success in high school.

Yes! Omg that dog freaked me out so much. Even now where games don’t scare me (except in VR), that dog still gets me even when I know the exact pixel to cross for it to trigger it to jump through the window 😅
