Netflix for Mom

Hi community.. My dear 83 year-old father passed and I’m with my mom this week. It’s sad and my family is grieving and healing, and supporting my mom as best as we can.

In the daytime I’ve been introducing my mom to streaming services and signed her up for Netflix.

So far she’s loved Dancing with the Birds and The Biggest Little Farm (documentaries, the later not on Netflix). I’m thinking she might like British Bake Off or Down for Love, Bridgerton or maybe The Queen’s Gambit. I also showed her the trailer to My Octopus, My Teacher which she was interested in.

I haven’t seen much of the above. And I’m biased toward documentaries, so I know those better. Help me if you can - any suggestions for films or series she would like?

She was raised on a farm in Kentucky and loves handicrafts and nature. She’s also a lifelong educator. She’d probably do well on cuddle comfort although she’s from a socially conservative family.

I also bought her an adult coloring book which went down well. She’s artistic but has never been trained, instead following her passion for teaching children. Suggestions on other things like that for this stage of life most welcome.

For me nothing beats friends, family, and walk in nature - and a cuddle of course - to help us humans grieve. Still, days ahead may be long for her and as much as she misses my dad, one of the very few upsides is having control of the remote.

She’s a pretty special lady and I appreciate any suggestions.

If she doesnt mind subtitles the kdramas are pretty good!!🤗

  • Thank you @UglyDuckling - which are your favorite?

  • Maybe not helpful as it’s not Netflix but clarksons farm on prime is an interesting look (comedy of errors) at modern farming. Three seasons.

  • Would she like The Good Place? (Would she be offended by phrases like "Holy forking shirtballs"?)

  • Awwwww sweet sweet sweet!! You might want to swap out Downton Abbey for Bridgerton if she was/is on the more conservative side. 😊

Also Virgin River & Anne with an E are great (not as racy) series.

Good luck and big hugs. Grieving is tough on everyone involved.

  • @lovingspoonfull that’s a great suggestion thank you. Looks perfect.

  • @IronLemon ha! She has certainly heard worse from me!! I’ve never seen Good Place and will look into it.

  • @sillysassy Thank you - hugs accepted virtually. Difficult days ahead no doubt. Great suggestions on more tame programming, as well - Downton Abbey noted. I actually didn’t know Bridgerton was steamy…

It’s nice to be read in this case by such a kind, caring community.

  • Huge thank you for the DMs. You know who you are. 🙏🏼

  • @timbear50 I’m sorry for your loss. Higs to you and your mom.

“When calls the heart” is very good. It was on there, but is no longer. Sometimes things come back on there though.

  • This is honestly one of the most wholesome threads I've ever seen. Love it . My mother really enjoyed GOT, Sopranos, and Tombstone, and honestly the thought of her enjoying all that violence, raunchy dialogue and nudity kinda weirds me out

  • Thanks @CuddleHugs01234 I’ll look out for When Calls The Heart.

@pmvines my apologies for tone, to right the ship let me be clear on one thing: she poops. I can’t imagine my mom enjoying GOT either. My grandmother loved Chuck Norris - I try not to think about that as well. Best left unimagined.

  • @pmvines
Yeah I watched GOT at age 70 and when that head was chopped off in the first episode I was pretty shocked. But it’s at the very top of my all-time best series list along with Breaking Bad. There are people my age who probably couldn’t handle it though. My SIL definitely couldn’t.
But shocking is fine with me lol.

  • So many penises and boobs in GOT too lol

  • @IronLemon , wouldn't the good place just remind her off her recent loss ? It seems like she needs a distraction.

  • @pmvines And we're back! Thanks for keepin it real. @Mike102 good call.. maybe I'll ease into that one. My impression is everyone in The Good Place is under 30. Strange.

  • @timbear50 - I'm so sorry for your loss. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 Thinking of you and your mom during this time.

  • @timbear50 my heart goes out to you, condolences to both you and your Mother. She probably would enjoy Queen’s Gambit, it’s on the tamer side and has a great story line. I like the suggestion for Downton Abby vs Bridgerton. Might she be interested in documentaries such as the ones like Worn Stories, Tales of light, or Life on this planet? I also recommend something set in another country just to kind of give that whisked away to another place feel. I like Emily in Paris for this but that might be a bit too steamy (though it is tamer than most) maybe try Last Tango in Halifax. I also really really loved From Scratch but the content might be a bit much for now with this being so fresh. I mean it was cathartic for me and so sweet but it’s definitely absolutely a tear jerker. Hope you find what you’re looking for and I hope both you and your Mother find peace through this journey of grief ♥️ I’m glad you’re here xx

My grandparents have dementia so we tend to play things that are familiar. Disney movies, music, rom coms, nothing serious more humorous. Don’t know if this helps.

  • Did anyone say stranger things yet ? It has a lot of heart and 80s nostalgia

  • Thank you @Ariananotgrande for your compassion and your thoughtful suggestions. Those documentaries look terrific, and just her speed. Life on this planet is especially good. Sounds like you love a good doc also! It's so good to be with her. I lived overseas for several years and just being with her this week has been healing for me, and supportive to her. A difficult time in life (I've heard "no one gets out of here alive") and I can only hope everyone in this community feels supported in times of grief. Onward to Emily in Paris (I just looked and it seems fun).

  • Great suggestions @brookcuddles1 - keeping it light! And @Mike102 Stranger Things ! Yes of course! Great one.

  • We are in the middle of a coloring renaissance over here. She’s now getting requests for birthday colorings from her grandkids.

The Queen’s Gambit episode was well received, she called it “intriguing.” The house will be much more quiet after I leave Atlanta today so it’s nice to leave behind a few distractions.

Thanks all y’all for the thoughtful suggestions.
