Are you truly yourself with others and/or online or do you try to impress 🏄🏼‍♂️🏄🏻

edited December 2020 in General

I think as people we go through phases... we start out trying to fit in .... to than wanting others to like us .... to peer pressure & finally trying to impress .... it isn’t necessarily in this order but I’m sure most can relate... there’s nothing better in this world 🌎 than being your true self & having others accept you & appreciate you for who you are .... why put up a front? Life is wayyy to short to try & fit in with everyone else & trying to be accepted ... just be your true self & those who are around you after the fact actually belong !!

In my experience, trying to fit in is a good move. Society is a useful thing. In fact it's practically inescapable: you can't even build your own house without society agreeing to let you have the land (usually in exchange for money, which you pick up by working in society).

Now, I'm terrible at fitting in. I do try! In fact most of my life has been spent pretending to be as normal as possible. And failing a lot. But hey. That's life.

In any case, I do obscure certain aspects of my true self, absolutely! That is definitely a thing I do. But the aspects I display aren't false anymore—that never worked particularly well, and it sure as shooting wasn't comfortable for me. No, these days I just keep a lot of my self under a veil, and show only those bits of my personality that I think are least likely to get me burned at the stake.

Nothing wrong with compromise for the sake of better living within society!

  • I am always Me, Myself and I... 100% of the time!!! But how we present shifts and flexes depending on where we are, who we're with, and how we feel. And whether online, on the phone, or in person, we're the same person everywhere we are. 😉 ~ And it get's me into a lot of awkward situations.

But I don't shift who I am just to get people to like me ~ I already lose a mess of sleep from all the stressing I do, and lose time because of the amount of explaining I feel I need to do just to be understood! I'd be done for if I added in 'not being who I am just so others will like me'. Who has the energy it would require to keep up the charade? Because I know I sure don't!

Sometimes I wish I could rely on alternate personas to get through though. Like an editor/filter would be cool. Or one of those, "I don't give a ___ what you think of me!" types ~ because I really do struggle with the notion of not caring what others think of me, and I envy those who can truly not care about being disliked. Ugh... my heart!! Maybe another could be one who's good at adulting. Even ones only good at cleaning, general task management, paperwork, school/studying, or financial stuff would be fantastic!!!

Eesh! Now that I'm seeing this typed out, maybe I really should try figuring out how to adopt another persona to handle some stuff for me. I'm constantly wanting to nap as it is, so maybe if I had more, it would take some of the pressure off... That's how that all works right?

  • @NightShift39 lol

    Great answer @DarrenWalker & @quixotic_life

Guys I tried to edit the post for 1 single typo & the poll got deleted & it sucks cause slot of people participated ..... oh well 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • @introvme see that's what I mean, people lol heh

  • @introvme ~ That's happened to me too. I didn't know you have to reselect the "attatch poll" box. Sigh...

  • I'm myself. I don't like pretending I'm something I'm not, because (as people have mentioned) it takes energy to keep up a charade. I also wouldn't like pretending in order to impress, because the truth will come out eventually anyway. With different people having different interests and personalities though, it can be easier to get along with some people than others, so I've often felt like I might act a little differently with different people depending on compatible interests, their personality, & sense of humor, etc..

It really depends where I am, who I’m approaching and why. When I’m in public, I don’t go outta my way to be rude or anything, but I certainly don’t try to impress the workers at all. At my own job I certainly don’t try to impress my team, but I do tend to sugar-coat a little bit when talking to the higher-ups. After all, they’ve had to fire so many ghetto ignoramuses who cussed them and were egregiously verbally abusive.

When socializing, I don’t go outta my way to impress anyone, but I’m not 100% my raw self until I believe someone knows me well enough. I hold a lot of controversial beliefs, and make constant excuses for my violations of social norms and non-conformity to society’s molds, citing my autism. I’m never quick to share my controversial beliefs because of the prices I’ve paid both online and off sharing them with people who took them outta context. I’ve never even shared my most controversial beliefs with any pro I’ve ever hired because they all drive a minimum of 15 miles each way to get to my home and I can’t afford to scare them off, especially if I ever expect an enthusiast to come into my life.

One of the most ghetto dudes that used to work where I work could never shut up about his latest DUI. He kept getting more and more DUIs. One morning he demanded from my boss’s boss’s boss that he get his raise starting that week, and he was let go in the snap of a finger. On his way out the door, he was referring to me when he exclaimed, “I don’t like the way he talks to people! He thinks he’s all that!” Hopefully dude gets a felony DUI that’ll send him to California’s state prison system for a few years. Then he won’t be able to get a title to own a vehicle, or a driver’s license, in Cali or any other state.

  • I really try, almost all of the time, to be my real self on this forum. I use my real name and my real photo. Everything I write is true and honest.

Most of the time I am a very relaxed, understanding sort of guy. I see things from other people's perspective as much as I can. I value thoughtfulness.

Every now and then some injustice, or word of hate, makes me really angry. I try to show that too.
