I feel like there's not enough information. For instance, the way the cats are positioned in the corner could affect the answer. If they're positioned in a way to all be looking at each other (or looking at the cat in the next corner), then you could say there are 4 cats (since another one of the cats is in front of them). But if they're all positioned to basically be looking at a wall, then there may be 4 additional cats so that there would be a cat in front of each of them.

@Invisible_Touch If it's not quantum superposition then the logical explanation would be one cat and the four walls of the box being mirrored reflections of that one cat. Hence "One cat in front of them" That's my conclusion.

There is a small, square, ordinary room which is empty apart from some cats. All the cats in the room are awake and stationary. There is one cat in each corner, sitting on the floor facing the centre of the room. Nobody knows who persuaded the cats to do this, or how.
In front of each of these corner cats, there is exactly one cat. How many cats are there in the room altogether?
Does that work? The centre of the room is technically a point midway between the floor and the ceiling, but I don't think that matters. The thing in front of you does not cease to be in front of you just because you look upwards.
You said how many cats are in the corners, but you didn't say how many cats were in the rest of the room. Maybe the room is STUFFED with cats!

Here is a genuine question from an exam for 11 year olds in China. It's not a joke or a mistake, it's a real, deliberate question. I think it's a very good question.
