@NightShift39 what is the difference, if any, between the sky appearing blue and being blue? Since it is always actually blue.

  • @CuddleDuncan well the main difference is one is correct. The sky itself is made of transparent gasses. They simply refract the light passing through them as blue most of the time. Also the sky is NOT always blue, ever see the sky over the ocean just before or after a major storm? Its green, had a massive electrical storm with heavy localized strikes? Enjoy the few minutes of purple sky.

  • @NightShift39 everything you say is true, obviously. I was really halfway between making a joke and making a philosophical/lexicographical point.

We might say something appears red, but in reality is just having an appropriate light shone on it to appear red, and its 'true' colour is something else. But that doesn't apply in the case of sky. It appears blue because it is blue. (Or, green, or purple, or red, or whatever it happens to be at that moment.)

Coloured transparent cellophane is both violet (or whatever) and transparent.

Rainbows complicate things. That thin part of the sky may be blue for me, but you with your pesky different location and perspective may see it as orange.

Actually I was trying to work towards a line about how 'the sky is still blue at night, it's just that you can't see that because its dark'. 🙄

  • @CuddleDuncan if it helps any I was just enjoying the chance to say something semi intelligent in a post for a change of pace since I'm normally just being my silly goofy self :)
