I do not know how the "picture selection " works. But I do have some input. As @CuddleDuncan correctly stated there are two types of "pictures" depending if you are completely logged off or not. In the @Envie post.... that is the same group of pics I see. I know that at least one person there is as real as they get! I have known them for 4 years and chatted with them today. They deactivated awhile ago. Again, I do not know how pic selection is completed, but there is at least one genuine real person on the home page, who was very active on this site. Don't know if this helps anyone or not.

When you're logged in and click the homepage you see a sampling of "newer" members (who've uploaded photos) up on your screen.
These people will also fall within your search filters for age and gender (possibly others). Kind of fun to olay with if really bored.
Not sure how it populates when logged out. Could be based on your cookies, or region, or just who has made the CC display cut. 🤷♀️

Well to be fair most new joins are under my age prefs so it's not the sites fault it has to put SOMETHING there after all
