I have been very into Kelela lately, an Ethiopian-American PR&B artist who seems to be entirely under the radar despite her talent and unique style in the genre. If you liked the early 2011-2014 sound of The Weeknd (minus the blatant misogyny and drugs, ofc) and can't stomach the poppy stuff he's releasing nowadays, you may enjoy her. It's maddening to me that he's come up from nothing and is topping charts simply by being talented and being tied to Drake. Yet this POC woman of the same ethnicity is getting next to no glory from anyone, no notable features on anyone's tracks, despite being classically trained and obviously having good artistry behind her.
So check her out if you're deep at all into R&B/PR&B or any of its subgenres. I think she's also done some work with heavy metal as well or another type of metal, but that's not my thing, so I can't recommend it but yeah, show her some love.
