How should I ensure the comfort of my clients?

edited May 2021 in General

I have 3 sisters and am quite at ease with most women, and them with me. I can, however, be clueless when it comes to home decor and creating a zen vibe.

I had a client who told me how she would have ran for the hills if my room was the first place she met me. Luckily, we had a vibe check and got to know each other at IHOP before the session.

I am always creating and I like to have the tools needed to make any idea come to life. I had a clean and painted peg board of tools in my bedroom. I thought it looked great and it fully represented who I am.
My client was quick to explain how frightening the tools would be to a girl who just met me. Lesson learned, the tools are now in my garage.

Any suggestions about creating a relaxing and welcoming space would be much appreciated =)

  • Nice soft lighting, comfy blankets and pillows, a nice scented wax or incense. Some nice photos of scenery would add to the mood. I have lighting , nice scents going. I also have a sound machine and keep the room dark and cool with an AC.

Tools definitely would make a woman think she stepped onto the set of Hostel or Saw. Lol

  • Great suggestions, Sheena! I'm purchasing on Amazon now =)

Aaaagh! Yeah, that could be terrifying for a woman who didn't know you very well (especially if there were hacksaws and stuff like that on display). It was a good idea to move the tools out of the space.

I realize that people have different opinions on what makes a space relaxing/welcoming, but I think the following things always help, at a minimum:

    • Covering up any cracks/dings/missing paint/holes/etc in walls with neutral decorations (posters, macrame, etc)
    • Cleanliness - no litter, dust, fingerprints, etc on the floor or any surfaces you can see/touch
    • Good lighting - no harsh, flickery "blue" lights. Opt for warm.
    • No smell (or a mild smell of cleaning products)

Personally, I find the following things relaxing and inviting:

    • Fuzzy things: blankets, throws, cushions, rugs
    • Plants
    • Soft music
    • Dimmable lighting

I hope that helps. Happy cuddling!!

Paint in cool colors (blues, greens, greys, etc.) They can bring down the core body temperature, making I feel more relaxed. Warm colors (yellows, whites, reds, etc.) can raise body temp and heart rate, subtlety causing mild anxiety.

  • @StefanOswald it's about context. I don't doubt that the tools look great, and say something interesting and personal about you. However, the context is cuddling and you don't need tools for that ... so the old, cave-dweller part of your visitor's brain is wondering what is going on.

Honestly the tools wouldn't bother me but then again I am diy person too. I feel part of this is getting to know each other and you should not have to put the tools up. You could mention it before hand. Also build some type of easy cover up like a fake window panel with a nice view or curtains that open up. You can easily hide it if it makes someone uncomfortable or leave it open for someone that might enjoy that type of atmosphere.

  • @squeakytoy, thanks for those suggestions! I'll get more fuzzy things and also a floating bonsai =)
As for soft music, I like to ask Alexa to play Liquid Mind at a low volume. That really is peaceful.

@creedhands, I'm colorblind and never really knew that about how colors effect people. Great advice!

Yeah, Duncan, the tools had to go, for sure.

Candy, yeah, it's more fun to show off my creations instead of the tools used to create =D

  • Great suggestion to have dimmable lighting, my thinking was lighting options. Most of us when we are comfortable like low light but when you first walk in you want to be able to see and assess. Maybe ask client their preference for lighting, scents, music, talking or not. Have fun!

I have a spare bedroom, so before each cuddle, I put the bed linens in washer/dryer about 2 hrs. before the cuddle, always have them fresh, I shower about 15 min's before. I have a lamp with a shade with a bulb that flickers like a candle, my med. size TV has WI-FI, I found a nice video of a night scene of a creek with sound with a blue full moon and a sound machine set to a bubbling creek on the head of the bed, which gives us stereo effect of the creek sounds and turn the AC down to about 62 degrees. many times we both have dozed off together. I find it so nice to doze off & wake up and still be in a tight cuddle.

@waynewv Oh wow, that sounds heavenly! What a nice ambiance.

  • @squeakytoy , thanks !!!!

  • If you visit my profile you can see a picture of my set up. I have green walls, a macramé hanging above the bed. My side lamps have color changing lightbulbs that can be any color you want, I have a galaxy ceiling projector, an essential oil diffuser with a large collection of essential oils to choose from. The color changing lights and the galaxy projector are both relatively inexpensive and make a large impact on the room if you don’t have a large budget for paint and decorations.

  • So many great suggestions!
@waynewv, that looks so relaxing. 62 degrees seems icy to this Florida guy but yeah, I get it =D
@xandriarain, your room looks heavenly. Those earthy vibes seem so inviting. I also love how detailed your profile is and how you have the most important information in image form as well. You've put a lot of. Thought and energy into this and I appreciate that. Keep it up!

  • I know some described it to horror movies but yeah even though I like watching horror movies, I don't want to spend time with a stranger in a setting that might resemble that. If you're meeting someone for the first time make sure the setting looks comfortable and safe. Don't give them a reason to question their surroundings or you. I only offer public sessions to strangers since yeah I wouldn't want to ever even run into that situation. So this girl was brave to meet a stranger alone in a secluded space that he owns. This is regardless of meeting in public place first before going there on the same day. The stranger can play his charm just until he gets you alone. Yup. I watch too much horror. Lol
