How is kissing (on the lips) platonic?!

I just dont get it

  • Can you explain what you're saying and why you're saying it?

  • [Deleted User]navyvet76 (deleted user)

I would imagine another user on the site was trying to say that to glueglue. And in my opinion it would not be unless it was simply as a greeting at the start or end to say good bye and it was quick. Like one might do with family.

    Sniffin that glueglue.

Poor fella, girlies trying to kiss him on the lips.

    It ain't easy bein cheezy.

I don't see it as platonic, but it depends how you define the word. Some people might see a friends with benefits relationship as "platonic" because there's no romantic feelings involved. But most definitions of "platonic" specify that it means "non-sexual".

  • @glueglue

At least based on how this website defines it, that isn't platonic and would put that person's account at risk.

  • It's a question of two Ts -- time and (excuse me, but) tongue. Very little of the first, and none of the second, That would make it platonic, right?

  • Majority of my friends have always been girls. Some have been very affectionate with and have even given an occasional peck of the lips, not making out or anything, but just a quick hello or goodbye kiss. Never anything non platonic about it.

  • Most of our friends (all couples) most women kiss me on the lips. Nothing's naughty or sexual just a hi/goodbye kiss.

Some families kiss on the lips, like a peck.

I'm assuming this question was asked in the context of a cuddling session.

    Seems like a troll thread.

If sniffy glueglue comes back I'll eat my words (along with the rest of this delicious wood-baked pizza).

    YUM!

    Now i am hungry choco

  • I still don't quite understand the point of his post. I wish he would have explained what he was talking about a little more specifically.

I took the question to mean "is a peck on the lips considered cuddling, or unacceptable provocation?" If that's not what the questioner intended, let's go with it anyway. SniffyGlue is free to challenge that interpretation. To ask a question is not to own it forever.

I dunno, I'd find it really weird if anyone who is a platonic friend tried to kiss me on the lips!! :O But to each their own, I guess. I don't mind if my little sister kisses me on the lips but she is very young so it's no big deal.

  • Per Merriam-Webster, platonic is "of, relating to, or being a relationship marked by the absence of romance or sex."

Why was this thread even initiated?...

  • [Deleted User]Dannn (deleted user)

It's only platonic if you hold your nose, wriggle your ear and think of a basic recipie for mashed potatoes.

  • It's very easy for me personally to keep a kiss platonic in the true definition of the word. Making out is different. I also see marks point regarding kissing and this website.

  • Dictionary.com defines platonic as:

of, relating to, or characteristic of Plato or his doctrines.

I bet Plato was not much of a kisser.

  • I do platonic kissing all the time, especially with long term female friends, often on the lips. We don't make a big deal about it or overthink it. My SO could care less. Let's not overthink this, we are healthy adults not Nuns and Eunichs. Is a kiss on the lips any better or worse than rubbing a cuddler's bare back (many like that) or head / hair (even more like that) or legs?

  • Platonic : (of love or friendship) intimate and affectionate but not sexual. I think it's pretty normal.

Right CarlosHunt, it's as important as we want to make it. Looked at objectively, it's no big deal. I have friends (women only) who expect to touch lips as a greeting, and would feel somewhat slighted without that.

Big ups to glueglue for starting this thread!

(edited to clarify that this applies only to women, and only to women that I already know; it usually pays to go back over my 6 a.m. posts)

  • i don't care what anyone else says or thinks...in the context of this site, any man trying to kiss me on the lips is creepy and skeevy. I'd like to hear what the women have to say.

Some guy named "glueglue" saunters in, drops a nuclear nonsense bomb, walks out never to be seen again, and yet the thread has actual momentum three days later. Pretty amazing if you ask me. This guy's got skills.

Morpheus said it best: "Can you explain what you're saying and why you're saying it?"

  • Not even my long term male friends would try to kiss me. There have been mutual pecks on the cheek during emotional talks (usually me talking them through breakups, a bitch fest and ice cream works wonders for the guys.) But never on the mouth.

I think would think that at least in the Western US the prevailing opinion is that kissing on the lips as something only done by non-platonic couples. I know it's different in other areas of the world but here if a man I just met or only barely knew tried to kiss me on the lips I would get pretty upset about it.

In the context of a cuddle (as a Pro) kissing on the lips is a big no. While I personally like kissing, it is too intimate a gesture for a platonic session and would more than likely lead to a pushing of set boundaries. I am not in a session to make out with a client or provide them with that type of intimacy, there are plenty of other services that do that if that is what they want. There is even a kissing school here is Los Angeles for people who want to be better at kissing :P

  • As with any type of touch, good consent communication should be practiced before any kiss, platonic or otherwise. As for 'otherwise' It shouldn't happen with anyone on this site. That being said, what shouldn't happen can't be enforced, if two people decide to take it to another level.

@sometimes "i don't care what anyone else says or thinks...in the context of this site, any man trying to kiss me on the lips is creepy and skeevy. I'd like to hear what the women have to say."

I would like to think that I'd screened a cuddle buddy well enough not to find a kiss on the lips from him creepy, but in context I would find it would be overstepping. After all, this person would not be an old friend but more likely someone I'm just getting to know. I could understand how the feelings of intimacy engendered by cuddling could lead to a desire to kiss on the lips, but it would definitely start to blur the lines between cuddling and sexual intimacy for me. I would just gently say no. If it happened again, we might have to rethink whether we would remain as cuddle buddies or whether something more romantic may come of it.

I have had male friends who have kissed me platonically on the lips, but even a no-tongue mouth kiss from a cuddle buddy, especially someone I'm only just getting to know, might be too tempting because I like kissing a lot.

Since I'm not a pro, I would find a kiss on the forehead or the cheek to be ok, especially if that was discussed in advance. Those types of kisses are nurturing and don't trigger any sexual feelings for me, so no problem.

  • @BlueIris - :) ;) <3 Muuuaaahhhh .... I like your thinking. Having said that I agree communication is key, and I do appreciate a peck on the cheek or an introductory hug from even a first time cuddle buddy.
