@MCcuddles2 : Fusion360 is proprietary. Instead, I should take a look at FreeCAD, where assemblies seem to begin getting support. @sillysassy : Manufacturing things is pricey only if you outsource it (Shapeways for example). On the other side, if you have access to a (fused filament based) 3D printer, the raw material doesn't cost so much, but the manufacturing itself costs time (can count in hours for complex parts) and patience (failures, retries...). Recycling the used plastic (not only old printed parts, but also a lot of failed prints and all the removable plastic bits like supports, tabs, rafts...) has indeed been thought about : on the Web there are a lot of projects of recycling machines (filament extruders). I haven't bought and tried one but it seems that the recycled plastic won't be as strong as the new one (because of broken polymer molecules I guess). That's why the "recycled" plastic sold by some filament manufacturers only contains small percentages of recycled plastic.
