CC forum regulars - home away from home 🏠

CC is a niche place we all come to, & the forum is even more niche in its own right (I don’t have data, but I feel that most of the site members don’t visit the forums), yet the ones that do, (us) keep coming back, (this includes active members & silent members who we don’t see on the comment section actively participating, but are also a part of this place & are as frequently here as everyone else.

honestly, how do you view the forum / threads / & the members within?

  • I feel that most of the site members don’t visit the forums

True. We did get same vague information on this once. There is also a large number of lurkers as you suggest.

  • I lurked for a long time. Then I recently deleted Facebook from my phone and I have a good amount of time now for these forums.

  • Lurkaholics?

  • glad you decided to become active on the forums @ShaneMTB , pretty sure you saw value here. & more perspectives / point of views & active members are always great : )

@JoyfulHeart not really sure what you’re asking.

  • I view it as social circle/life, and also the entire website as a whole for likeminded people (re. cuddling). It's quite nice to get to know the forum participants better - which to me is really fascinating, even though I'm an introvert, each person is a unique universe - and also the cuddling philosophy.

  • Nothing really coherent, @cuddles_ndream

  • I was just thinking of this last night. I felt crummy yesterday and, frankly, have felt crummy quite a bit today. My mood took a nosedive, I felt achy, slightly headachy and nauseous. I have no reason to think I’m ill, I think it’s just some different factors. And the lack of normal social interaction gets to me. I really wanted some company and really could have used some cuddles last night. Fortunately, my bunny was in a very cuddly mood and that worked well enough.

But this place is one of my refuges. I think because our common interest is cuddling that it puts a slightly different twist on my perception of my community here. I’m grateful to have it. It helped me get through the night a little more easily.

@Babichev I think what you said was very human and well expressed. Everyone has been there, and some have made too many return visits. I loved your post because you made me experience it through the senses. Your words have a connection to the human condition.

  • These forums are a lot better than they used to be. I remember over a year or two ago they were pretty bad. there were a few regulars who would always gang up on anyone who didn't agree with them. The pro cuddlers I would see often told me that they avoided the forums because of that.
It seems a lot better now. I'm guessing the mods are the reason for that.
I am still hesitant to post stuff because I became so used to being ridiculed or ganged up on by those regulars.

  • @Melancholy I think we all know the two you are referring to. Thankfully the mods have put them on thin ice.

As far as the forums, I've come to really enjoy many of the people here. I enjoy talking to them and seeing their perspectives.

I’m a bit of an anomaly in my profession - a science-based massage therapist. About ten years ago I had the good fortune to encounter a group of mostly physical therapists whose common interest was reading current pain science and exploring how to integrate it into practice. They had a huge forum where they discussed research and practice. They were very strict about personal attacks and not bringing topics into the discussion that were not science based. Most of them had PhDs and had been studying this stuff for years. I felt very timid stepping into that scene but they encouraged me to participate. I got accustomed to having my ideas challenged very quickly. They had a saying: Here you are safe but your ideas may not be. In other words, we won’t attack you personally but expect your ideas to be examined and challenged rigorously. I came to welcome it because if something could stand up under their scrutiny, then there might be something to it.

I was pretty excited about what I was learning and there were a few other MTs who also wanted to bridge the gap between science and massage therapy. We started a FB group where we could discuss current research. Inevitably, other MTs found the group, were not science literate. In fact, many were downright anti-science. I learned pretty quickly how vicious MTs can be when their beloved beliefs are challenged. People hurled every verbal abuse they could at me. What’s really weird is that it never hurt, discouraged, or intimidated me.

I’ve been an activist since I was in first grade. I’m serious. I went to a Catholic school where kids would yell, “You Jew!” at each other to insult each other. I had friends who were Jewish and really liked them and was personally offended by that and would argue with the other kids about how wrong their insults were. When I was in second grade I went to the neighbor lady’s front door and confronted her about drowning some kittens. (She did not like her next door neighbor, their neighbor had a cat that had kittens, and she caught them and drowned them.) My life is peppered with stories like that. If I think something is really wrong, I have to speak up about it.

I worked in construction for 13 years and was the first journeywoman electrician in IBEW Local #1. I endured a lot of abuse but I am stubborn, I don’t let other people stop me from doing what I want to do.

So, someone getting cranky at me in an online forum hardly fazes me. In the case of the MTs, it was clear to me that they had no idea what they were talking about. I did not take them lashing out at me personally, I realized what I was hearing was their pain from the realization that maybe their beliefs were unsupportable.

My motivation there was the client, that we had a professional responsibility to have an accurate understanding of how the body works and what we can and cannot do. The client cannot give informed consent if we don’t give them accurate information. And the better informed we were, the more likely we were to be able to help those in pain.

Here, it’s just social interaction, the stakes aren’t so high. But still, I don’t fret too much. When you are secure in yourself, other people can’t knock you around so much. I can recognize when someone knows less than I do about a subject and take that into consideration. I’m also good at recognizing when someone knows more than I do about a subject and at that point I shut up and listen. (And quietly take my foot out of my mouth if I inadvertently put it there.)

I’d really like to see us be able to discuss ideas in a more calm and focused manner but that’s hard to find. I’d still encourage folks to contribute what you have to say and don’t be intimidated. Someone may need to hear it.

  • I used to post here a lot and even used to start new topics. Because of negative reactions, I don't come here as often. I belong to and post on several other sites.

  • In all honesty, I see the forums kind of like a bar. You drop in, hang out, chat with people from around the neighborhood, and occasionally someone gets rowdy and has to be bounced. Basically, it's a handy spot for relaxation and low stakes social contact.

  • @joyfulheart Has a good sense of humor and insightful comments. Forums can be educational for me and help me know who I might approach.

  • @DaringSprinter - I like that description. I don’t hang out in bars but if this were a bar, I’d hang out in it.
