Mid-Flight cuddle

The flight from San Francisco was overbooked. The airline was offering first $600 credits, then $1200 credits for anyone willing to give up their seat for a later flight. Since I need to be at a client site first thing tomorrow morning, I had wistful thoughts of those possible credits and boarded when my group number was called.

A woman was sitting at the window in my row. I was in the aisle. Then a younger man looked first to his right, then to us, confirmed his seat, and I stood and let him pass me. In this Covid-protocol world, we spoke by eyebrows and head nods as he settled into his seat. The woman put on her headphones and tuned us out completely. This guy and I shrugged at each other. He pulled out a Switch console. I turned off my phone, but he noticed my Legend of Zelda background on my phone.

His eyebrows rose. "You're a gamer?" he asked, behind his mask. I could hear the too-late-to-take-it-back judgement in his tone.

I locked eyes and held him. "Yes. Since before you were born." He had the grace to laugh softly.

"Nathan," he stated, offering his hand.

"Sid," I replied, shaking his hand firmly.

We bantered back and forth on favorite games and genres. PC, console, mobile...FPS, turn-based, strategy, RPG. We traded favorite titles. We were both jazzed to sit next to someone for a 4.5 hour flight and have something in common. He played Breath of the Wild and nudged me when he was fighting a tough opponent. He showed me how to use a shield as a snowboard. He favored the divine shield power and I favored bombs and melee when I fought the baddies. He'd take a break from gaming and at one point he gifted me an extra tangelo, and I gave him a bag of cheddar sun chips I'd brought along. We exchanged Discord info so we could keep in touch. I pulled out my laptop and dove into work documents.

At about the 3 hour mark, after yawning a few times, he'd put his Switch away. He mumbled something about getting two hours sleep and then he leaned back in his seat and closed his eyes. He fidgeted a little bit before bunching up his hoodie and, eyebrows in askance of me, to which I nodded and smiled behind my mask, he used the hoodie as a pillow against my shoulder. I kept reading through a 300 page implementation manual. The hoodie kept slipping until his head was against my shoulder. He held my right arm and the hoodie against him while he slept, which didn't impede my ability to read and scroll with my left hand. I thought of my godsons who were avid gamers and the many screaming hours of Mario Kart and other games, until their eyelids were heavy and we HAD TO GO TO SLEEP - and Nathan was barely older than them. I continued to read and let him sleep against me, cuddled into my side, holding my bicep.

The fasten seat belt sign came on as the 30 minute warning towards touch-down. He raised his head and rubbed his eyes, yawning. He punched my arm softly.

"You are rad. Honestly, this is the best flight ever," he said.

I let my eyes narrow so he would know I was smiling behind the mask. "Gamers gotta game."

He removed his mask, showing a huge smile. "See you online, Sid."

  • @Sideon Awesome story!!! ✈️ πŸ€—πŸ‘πŸΏ

  • Eeeee!! I love this!!! πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–

  • @Sideon what a great time in that plane ✈️! Flying can be such more enjoyable when you are engaged with that anonymous person beside you. With persons of same sex I usually engage the convo. With members of opposite sex I let them engage first in conversation. I know that’s old school but just how I was taught and challenging to change that. I usually (ALWAYS) am in aisle seat and want to chat with middle row or window person Sometimes like your situation it works well. Sometimes not. We are all different in those settings. Lot of anxiety on plane transportation today. But what a great story Sid! 😊

  • @Sideon
I recollect another story of a cuddle on a plane or train from a while ago. what a great way to fly, the thing they all have in common is you, im not surprised, 😊.

Everyone brings their own game where ever they go, its their nature. 🧑

I love this πŸ₯° thanks for sharing Sid.

  • @Sideon Nice experience!

@OhioMike I kind of have similar modus operandi, but I am quite an introvert.

In fact, I was returning from Calgary last week (where else to be in February if not Western Canada??), and I had a flight attendant riding on the window seat of the exit row, while I was on the aisle one (regional jet, so no middle seat).
She spent the whole flight trying to sleep with her head slumping down and jerking up. I thought about saying "you could just lean on my shoulder if you want"... but decided not to.
In this day and age, I didn't want to get pepper-sprayed, duck tapped on my seat or added to a no flight list.

  • I love this!!! πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ₯°

  • This story is so sweet!! πŸ₯° aw I bet he’ll never forget that flight

That's such a nice story, @Sideon. Thanks for taking out time to share it with us!

For me, I go off the vibes and body language from my neighbor to decide if I can initiate a talk with them or not. I know some don't want to talk, but then there are some who want/don't mind to talk but they are shy of initiating a conversation.

  • This is just so sweet. Thank you for sharing

  • Aw… so sweet. Uncle Sid! πŸ˜‰

  • Something similar has happened to me on a train a couple of times, although I couldn't have told the story so nicely even if remembered the details.

On a plane .... well I was once flying from Frankfurt to London. The sky was dirty and we hit a bump shortly after takeoff. I hardly noticed, but the woman next to me grabbed my hand and gripped fiercely. We hadn't spoken and indeed I'd barely noticed her. I was taken aback but retained enough presence of mind to keep hold of the hand. She turned to me and stammered out, "Are we going to die?" I was so confused that I needed her to say it again, and then I'm afraid I just burst out laughing. Anyway, it turned out this she'd never been in a plane before, was a bit nervous, and didn't know about turbulence. I held her hand for a bit but she was fine.

  • There is no better feeling in my world than cuddling up with a safe man's muscles ❀ Thank you @Sideon, you're awesome!

  • What a great story. And he’s right, you ARE rad!

  • Thanks for the kind words, folks.

Let's just say jet-lag has kicked my posterior this week and I'm finally feeling human after a full night's sleep.
