Medical devices

edited March 2022 in General

I’m wearing a heart monitor for the next month. Well 14 days and then I get a second one for 14 days. If you showed up for a session and felt this or some kind of other medical device through your cuddle partners clothes and they hadn’t told you they were wearing it, what would your reaction be?

That’s not me in the pic btw

I personally don't think that would remotely be an issue, if it comes up you can just say it is a heart monitor you need to have on for a few weeks and that you'd rather not talk about that topic. Anyone here would gladly honor your request and leave the topic alone. Should not be a problem at all I think.

  • I wouldn’t see a problem at all, I would actually be intrigued about it & be extra sweet to them to make their heart feel better ❤️‍🩹 🌌

  • Mild concern. I would be worried that the person was ok, and worried that I might inadvertently damage or displace it or something. I should think we'd talk about it for a moment and then continue the cuddle, perhaps in a slightly different position.

If it's something that's likely to be detected during a cuddle, probably best to mention it at the start just to avoid surprise or alarm.

  • Not an issue for me for sure.
If I had one I would tell my cuddle partner.

  • Not an issue for me at all. I have lots of clients from all walks of life with many different situations, and I am only extra sweet as a response.

@Morpheus It would be less awkward than me having an untimely physical response during cuddles. a few words of reassurance and I'm sure I wouldn't give it another thought.

As with others, I give you encouragement. Take a friend and sit down and have all the conversations you both can think up. You'll never meet a situation that you haven't already thought/talked through.

I know this may sound crass or insensitive. But, you could also have fun with it. Make a gesture of pushing it like a big button and tell your co-cuddler to hold on because you've just activated the oxy-turbocharger.

Blessings of Peace and Wellness around this.

  • I honestly think medical devices that are visible or may impede on certain cuddling positions should be mentioned. Not that they ‘need’ to be discussed. But a lack of mentioning can lead to damage to the device or the person wearing it.

If people have a negative reaction to a medical device, is it really someone you want to cuddle with?

I have a client with a colostomy bag, could you imagine if I were unaware and immediately positioned myself onto that side of him with my weight? The bag rupturing isn’t the fear… it’s the chance of me damaging the stoma and causing a horrible and life threatening situation for my client.

And without sounding mean to the people that have said they would be “extra sweet” to people with medical devices… shouldn’t you be just as kind to everyone??
I personally don’t treat my clients ‘more kindly’ because of a medical device or diversity, I treat them all with the upmost respect and kindness across the board, because I care. I’m not putting myself on a pedestal… it’s just an integrity thing for myself.

  • It's not an issue at all. I have an ICD inside me. I just made sure to disclose it.

  • I would want to know if my cuddle partner had a medical device so I could be sure not to mess it up or lay on it.

  • @ModestEnvy ”extra” implies that we’re being sweet already, not that we will be because of a device.

  • Huh... Well... Since we're all encouraged to ask/give consent for touch, there really should be no "accidental" touching of anyone's anything.

That said, I can be absent minded at the best of times, so having whatever it is securely affixed would be advised, especially if something like a port.

But yeah, unless they are leaky, medical devices don't bother me.

  • @cuddles_ndream 🤗 I hope you don’t feel as if it were a dig because it was not. I apologize if it came across untoward.

I understand the word “extra” in there supports one already being sweet. I was simply sharing an opinion that a medical device should not push someone to be “extra” anything, that they should already naturally be “extra sweet” to all of their clients.
And I only posed it that way because it was mentioned twice in the same respect by two people.

  • @ModestEnvy i felt it was a little bit but I genuinely understand what you mean 🤗 🫂 🌌

I don’t know if maybe the word “more nurturing” would’ve been more suitable? but I completely understand that in your interpretation we shouldn’t be more of anything, we should be the upmost of something initially ….

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t more nurturing / more careful / or more ‘sweet’ to a completely blind cat at a cat shelter , or more giving to someone picking up bottles in the middle of the winter to eat (& not being the same to someone being my same age asking me for a dollar) … I do use bias in certain situations … if I book with a pro & she happens to have a physical disability ect I’m going to make her feel like she isn’t (maybe I shouldn’t & maybe I’m wrong for it, but I’ll be wrong for that)

  • @cuddles_ndream that explaination of your view in being “more” in certain circumstances is spot on for most in life! 🤗 I won’t say that I’m different in some of those respects.
It must have just been the way the sentences were posed that made me pause on it.
    Again I do apologize.

  • @ModestEnvy no need to apologize, thank you for being the person you are… really!!! 😊 🌌

  • Thanks for all of your replies. I would definitely let my cuddle partner know beforehand.

  • Definitely someone should let their cuddle partner know if they have a device. Sometimes people forget to tell you or they just don’t tell you things they should. If I noticed something like that I’d ask what it was and what is their situation. I need to know if I should make any special accommodations or whether they should even be cuddling with me at all. My rule of thumb is this: if they are not restricted from normal activity then there should not be a problem. If they do have restrictions then we need to talk about what they are and whether they are going to interfere in any way.

I’m kind of accustomed to this after being a massage therapist for 30 years. I”ve had these conversations with many, many clients.

  • @Morpheus
I am into bio-hacking so I recently started wearing a continuous glucose monitor on the back of my upper arm. It is slightly smaller than the heart monitor in the photo you posted. I have only cuddled twice since I started wearing it and I casually mentioned it to both of my cuddle partners. Neither of them made any issue of it and it did not interfere with our sessions in the slightest. I just wanted them to know about it so they would not be concerned if their hand brushed across it.

It's best to disclose anything medical like that. I know it's not the same, but there are certain medical conditions where massage and reflexology should be avoided, so if you're going to "weighted blanket" someone, it might not be a good idea in some cases.
