The reason we are all here today is because most of our ancestors were successfully tribal. It’s difficult to unlearn those kind of ingrained mechanisms from past millennia, as they are not as essential for survival in this century, but not impossible. I think that’s why some people are attracted to things like meditation, breath work, Yoga, and so on.

I've wondered what is the seasoning or ingredient in commercial salsa that makes it taste distinctly different from other commercial tomato products or recipes. I like that specific taste. It's not the hot peppers. I don't buy that kind. It tears up my mouth.

@achetocuddle - I’m a big Sapolsky fangirl. I met him a few years ago when he was keynote speaker at a small conference I attended. I’d made fancy cookies for everyone and so offered him a cookie. My copy of Why Zebras Don’t Get Ulcers is signed, “Thanks for the cookie.” That’s my claim to fame. Really, he’s amazing.

This is probably the most recent video of Sapolsky. Apparently some Russians have read his books and have asked him to comment on the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. He goes into the evolutionary roots of tribalism, how it is reinforced socially (in this instance, during military conflict). His final sentence: “What the science shows us is that there is no human who is so different from us that it doesn’t count when you kill them, they’re still a human.”
