Sad to see that ca 50% are clear about indirectly robbing the pump … perhaps people are not happy about the fuel prices so this response was triggered? … meaning that if the fuel was around $2/gal and people were faring well this response may be better … I hope the latter is true otherwise it may not be a good indicator for the society
The customers did not know it was a mistake, there was no intent to steal, inflation and unemployment is high,and it was not their fault nor responsibility to ask why the gas prices were this way: it coulda been a promotion or marketing scheme or a sudden break.
I would say the customers are or should be absolved of blame regardless of the result bc it wasn't their fault nor intent. My two cents.
The social forces were too strong not to do it: pple swiping without looking, almost free gas in a tanking economy, and incompetent business owners.
@achetocuddle and others who are thinking about the employees and small station owners, here is the way to cut the power to all pumps. No power equals no flow.
Look for the emergency shut off button usually near the entrance of the building and just quietly press the button and discreetly inform the manager on duty of what the issue is.
Pretty much unless you've worked at a gas station or are involved with the industry you don't even know this button exists even though it's right in front of you.
Also handy to know incase of a car fire at the pumps.
@cylee1180 - I'm pretty sure they know that gas does not cost 69 cents per gallon. It's common sense and was an obvious mistake.
@Mike403 They're not stealing if they paid for it imo. It's a user error, and the user is the employee. I think the climate , the intent, and the situation have to be kept in mind when analyzing ethical issues. They were just pumping gas.
Like if the result was made it bad and not the lack of intent, then what if the owners somehow received compensation for it through insurance? Would it still be a crime or tragedy or does the act in itself entail some kind of theft to you?

@cylee1180 - If you take advantage of an obvious mistake, it's stealing. There has never been a promotion that reduced the cost of gas by 90%. Maybe 10 cents off a gallon is as much as I've seen.

@cylee1180 - Only free songs that weren't copyrighted. I owned more than 300 CDs before services like Spotify emerged. Now I stream my music.

@cylee1180 great point about mp3, even the “legal” streaming business is predatory … many & I mean many artists & bands have spoken out against them … even the very successful & high grossing Taylor Swift …. I hope no one here has a streaming service like Spotify / Apple Music / Pandora ect or you’re stealing from your favorite artists by not buying their music directly. I see a lot of people here that post YouTube songs on the music thread … it is hurting those artist if you don’t purchase directly.
@cuddles_ndream - Many artists have their own YouTube channels and they post their music themselves. They get a cut of the ad revenue.

Back in the early days when apps like Napster was peer to peer music sharing, it was stealing to use it. Spotify or any of the other legal streaming apps are not because the artists gets paid for the music that is on there and they can choose to have it removed if they don't like it.
@cuddles_ndream Yeah. Hard to be a stickler about this stuff, especially when I think humanitarian and environmental issues are of more importance than nit picking ethical issues about candy bars and mp3 and dropped 10 dollar bills.

I'm not sure what this has to do with a pricing error at the gas pump. The music artists know what services their music is on and they know how much they're getting paid and still choose to leave their songs on there.
Because by your own words … we know better, we are hurting artists by streaming their music & not purchasing directly , even if getting their music through legal means like a streaming service … if we want to put high standard of morality, let’s apply it to everything.

I think my views and OPS views on ethics or approaches are very different. I think some pple view morality as a black and white issue, and I think its mostly grey.
For example: is a person terrible for having an affair...during an abusive marriage bc they found a connection and it somehow helped them? Is a poor person wrong for stealing if its meant to help feed their family? Is lying to your boss wrong...even if it's a toxic workplace that micromanages ? Can you lie to a SO if it means it'll spare their feelings or does it depend on the act or the degree?
I think the post wasn’t necessarily about gas, but more so about morality … anyone that knows me forever & you asked them what are 2 things I don’t like , they will tell you I don’t like lying & stealing … while I wouldn’t do it to an independent gas station I wouldn’t care about a corporate one, but I wouldn’t blame someone for feeling like they’re finally catching a break … my goal wasn’t to argue but I felt my integrity & other peoples integrity was being put into question, but if you want to be done I’ll be done to.
So when @cuddles_ndream adds nuances to the issue and draws a parallel to the gas issue, she's out of line? I dont think it was out of line. I think she made a solid point. Okay, gonna back pedal slowly.

Even the title of the post misleads a reader to automatically agree w his opinion vs "Innocent gas patrons flock to outrageously cheap gas prices" or "Incompetent business owners sets wrong gas prices and pays big." Semantics and linguistics are a whole different branch of discussion or cultural imperialism etc. Back pedals slowly.
