I started on this during the Covid lockdowns due to boredom and continued upgrading. I spent an estimated of around $3k on this setup with the monitor costing $1k of that.
Sure... I might prefer on a bigger screen and I've neither games nor much experience on my hands. Though I'm into gaming at heart, hoping to get something going someday.
Been PC gaming since I was a kid. I got lucky and needed to buy a new rig right before the lockdowns so I got a top of the line system for pre covid prices.
Yep I am both part of the PCMR and the Console peasants 😅 Though consider me jealous of your graphics card, I still have a 1080 😔 The 3080’s are finally available but I can’t bring myself to buy one when the next gen cards are right around the corner. If these cards are actually purchasable I will start my next PC build. I wonder if crypto dipping so much has anything to do with their availability, or if it’s just the chip shortage coming to an end finally.
EDIT: Also I am really embarrassed to say I have not played The Witcher III… That looks awesome on that super wide curved monitor.
@Charlie_Bear - I used to be a PS4 peasant during the pre-covid days. Now it has a layer of dust on it.
The thing with graphics cards is that they retain at least half of their original value when a new one comes out. You can sell old electronics to http://www.buybackworld.com including graphics cards and they'll send you a shipping box and pay for S&H to send it to them. It makes upgrading the most expensive part of the PC less expensive. They're paying $130 for a used GTX 1080 right now as long as it's fully functional... ($20 for a broken one)

With the graphics card scarcity, I couldn't justify building my own PC these days.

I've been finding a lot of good use from my Surfacebook!
(They type on their mobile phone while their laptop grows cold beside them)
I still have a pile of console games to get through
(plays Mass Effect for the 4th time while their Steam library weeps)

I have not started gaming on PC as much but once I move in a bigger place I plan on creating a massive gaming room and building a PC. Right now I play Xbox and love Back 4 Blood, GTA V, and State of Decay w/ Juggernauts ☺️

I see to game quite a bit, now its more casual, I'm still on an RX580
I threw together a cheap system about 8 months ago. Old Dell 9020 with an i7. Swapped out the spinning disk for an SSD, loaded it up on RAM, modded the case a little to fit a 6Gb Nvidia 1060GTX, and I'm still impressed at how well this ~300$ experiment is running things.
@SoothingTapioca Not a bad price given the crazy tech economy last year! Most newer games will run decently with an old i7 and a video card like ours at 1080p, though in my case I have an old Ryzen which I got at a great price. Getting up to that 144 Hz plus frame rates will either require high end stuff or lowering settings heavily.

My PC needed mid to high end hardware just to drive my monitor. It's the equivalent of running two 27 inch displays at 1440p.
Big, nice monitors really change the experience for the better. Going from 60 hz 900p to 165hz 1440p for me was quite amazing. I have to lower settings in some games for my RX580 to keep up, but I just can't give up that sweet resolution. My monitor supports HDR but I haven't seen much benefit from that yet. I can't wait for OLED gaming monitors to become mainstream. Your monitor looks sick! Just don't forget about the sound!
Been PC gaming for around 35 years probably. My current one is pretty old but nobody has released anything particularly interesting recently. The 5800x3d is the most interesting part over the last couple years.
GPUs have just been overpriced turd after overpriced turd. I had hoped Intel might release something interesting but that's looking pretty unlikely. Both AMD and Nvidia failed to release a card that offered better price/performance than the 970 I got at launch. If they can't compete with themselves from 2015 then they can keep their hardware.
Your monitor may have fake HDR. That's super common. Hardware unboxed on YouTube has some good monitor reviews.
@JasonCuddles - I think you meant to tag @sunnysideup about the HDR because I haven't mentioned it.
@JasonCuddles I mainly use rtings.com for monitor/TV reviews, but HW unboxed gave my monitor a very good review (MAG274QRF-QD). It may be just the games HDR modes I'm using aren't that great, or the HDR specification on my monitor isn't very good (I've heard there are many different HDR standards and I'm not sure which one my monitor has).
Like I mentioned earlier in this thread, this whole thing started out as a project during the pandemic lockdowns because I had nothing else to do. Even though lockdowns are over, I'm still enjoying it. The GPU was $900, which is pricey for just a single PC component, but saying that a PC is overpriced is like saying that somebody's $20k motorcycle is overpriced. If somebody likes riding Harley Davidsons, more power to them.
Consoles are probably the better choice for somebody who just wants to game casually.
@Mike403 I've actually heard that consoles are priced such that the companies take a loss on the sale, hoping to recoup from game sales, but I'm not sure I never fact checked this.
Definitely the customization and personal style you can effect on your PC build is half the fun of owning one.
Consoles also have the advantage of being (generally) less buggy and more streamlined, slim designs. But now that hardware design seems to be converging that may change. Consoles also have unique titles (For example I'm jealous Playstation owners get to play the Horzion sequel a year earlier than me), though the inverse is also true. Consoles additionally will likely have the best designed controllers.
@sunnysideup HUB usually looks at HDR and a lot of monitors fail to provide any meaningful HDR. I have no idea what your monitor is but I imagine it's fake HDR. Most of them are.
@sunnysideup - You can real fancy with the PC controls if you're willing to open up your wallet. I have an XBox style controller that I paid $150 for. It's a Wolverine Ultimate.
One thing I did not yet go all out in is in the audio department. I have a $50 sound bar underneath the monitor.
You can use controllers on the PC if you want to, at least the Xbone one.
@JasonCuddles - Windows PCs are natively compatible with an XBox One controller. Any other controller will work including PS4/PS5 if you use an emulator. Steam has a controller emulator built in if you run games through it.

My desktop is going on 7/8 years. Getting close to needing an upgrade. But besides some MMOs, I mostly just play RuneScape, Minecraft, and Factorio these days
But here's my "desk" I've had for about just as long (not exactly my setup, this from Google image), but I do have 4 monitors.
A single big, curved one like yours is quite tempting too
