Nope cant complain had a good father growing up. As for this case as long as he is living under his father’s roof he should learn to listen and honor both his parents as the bible states.

  • @Mike403 Destroying the equipment is probably not the optimal thing to do. But you said “Worst Dad Ever”. So that’s worse than sexual abuse? Worse than than parents who starve their children in cages? Is it even worse than parents who neglect their kids and let them ruin their lives by wasting it obsessively playing video games? Everyone does things they are not proud of. I bet every single one of us has done something at least as bad as destroy video game equipment. If the video of that was put on the internet, would you agree it’s grounds to be labeled “Worst person ever “. He who is without sin should throw the first stone. I wish people on the internet would remember that saying.

    Amen to that

  • Douchey? Not sure what that means. I think both are justified, but it is preferable to give it away or sell it. Better for charity or the environment. Destroying it does make quite a statement that something won't be tolerated. Traumatic? Well, yes, but so would having it taken away. If the kid actually had a reasonable chance of winning 3 mil, though, my sentiments are aligned with the kid's, "WTF!!" He could have been set for the rest of his life. Generally, I think kids should not be playing video games that much, but since he has, apparently, risen to the level where he can make that much money, I'd support him.

  • @JohnfromVienna - If he's making money doing it then it's no different than a desk job where you use a computer. It's like a professional football player who makes a damn good living just playing the game.

  • @dave31415 the kid is a streamer, so ofc he’s gonna post about it. I mean yeah, it would be nice if people didn’t air out their family drama online, but those days are long gone. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was staged and he did it to get a new pc and get more views, not that I am remotely suggesting that to actually be the case here. But still destroying property is horrible, especially now during this chip shortage!! His dad should have considered that 😂

  • Mike403 Agreed. If he's making that much money, yes. These are still important developmental years and can be some of the best years of one's life -- they'll never get that part of life back. Ideally, teens should be studying, out playing, volunteering, exploring, and falling in love. We generally don't let kids work that much with good reason. If he's spending all day doing it and only making 10K a year doing it, it's not worth the massive loss to one's life.

  • In my family we don’t air our family drama online. I would recommend people do the same. Kids should be kids. They shouldn’t be making loads of money from online whatever. You don’t get your youth back. There are more important things to be doing at that age than having your head buried in video games and not learning real social skills.

  • @dave31415 - Kids should be doing whatever it is they enjoy. My dad used to tell me that video games was a waste of time while he sat and watched TV all day.

I’m not a parent, but here’s my two cents. That dad went way too far. His actions indicate that he can’t and/or has trouble controlling his anger. I think what he did was emotionally and mentally abusive. Dad, whoever you are, don’t be surprised if your son hates you later on. No parent should ever resort to breaking their children’s personal belongings. That pretty much teaches their children that it’s ok to break someone’s personal belongings if said person did them wrong.

PS: Those who voted for option 1, there’s something wrong with you.

  • @Mike403 My eight year old likes playing video games and eating candy. Should I just let them do that and not try to raise them to be an adult? Again, I’m sure this isn’t this person’s finest moment in parenting but family functions should come before video games so the kid should have simply obeyed his Dad and this would never had happened. I don’t want to be seen as defending the Dad. I just wish people would refrain from snap judgement. The main response I have to anything like this is just: I shouldn’t be watching this, nor should anyone else. It’s a private matter and private matters should be worked out in other ways than mass exposure in the internet.

  • @dave31415 - I'm sure his dad wouldn't have minded if it was a hockey tournament. Video games are seen in a negative light because it's still fairly new technology that people passed a certain age don't understand. E-Sports are a thing that we have to learn to accept in the current times. People compete for cash and prizes the same way they would in a "traditional" sport.

  • Interesting thread and I haven't finished reading it; @dave31415 your thoughts and the way you express them are marvelous.

So many hypotheticals and essays and arguments and hypothesizing over such a plain and simple, right from wrong scenario

I've been in this exact position as a parent . I have gone in to my son's room , unplugged his devices , and taken them for a said period of time . This is consequences . This works because if you want to not lose your device bad enough , you will not repeat the behavior. I believe in fair, but firm parenting. This guy though , you just dont destroy , humiliate, disrespect, and psychologically warp your child. No telling what other things have happened in that home that didnt happen to end up online .

  • This is a much older video of a father who shot up a laptop that belonged to his unruly daughter. You might have seen it unless you were living under a rock. It did go viral.

  • @Mike403 I have the feeling that last one was done for views

  • "You don't know why this man destroyed a child's property. Maybe the child deserved it. It's between him and the child, really. No one else should ever have known what he did, because how can we judge without knowing all the facts? Sometimes it's just fine to smash a kid's property, leaving them choking back tears as they stare at the ruin of their heart!"

It can be instructive to learn who thinks it's okay to hurt a child, and when, and why. Thank you for this thread, @Mike403.

    • It's okay to destroy a kid's property—if they don't do what you want them to do.

    • It's okay to beat / whip / spank a child—if they don't do what you want them to do.

    • It's okay to scream at / terrify a child—if they don't do what you want them to do.

After all, they're a child. It's good for them to do what you want them to do, and bad for them to do what you don't want them to do. Therefore, breaking their things, beating them, terrifying them... whatever it is, whichever one/s you endorse... it's fine. Good for them, even.

    Enlightening.
