What I Thought Once I Needed

[Deleted User]SoulParaTodos (deleted user)

To begin, this a personal true story of how a young man (me) thought of what was missing in my life then.

It’s when people around you can influence your way of being, even more a cultural influence. As a Latino, in order for a young man to become a MAN was to lose his virginity and hit on girls so that they’d fall for you.

I was 22 and that was template. I didn’t have friends really and was disconnected with the outside world. I had low self esteem because I thought I had NADA to other. Could not dress well nor take a girl out for dinner; had no money here in the States. All men by my age had sex already many times and had a car, nice clothes, etc. Some even had girlfriends.

I has nothing to offer. So I became more aware of my lack of manhood and no one would ever want to be with me. Then one day, I went back home to South America. The American dollar was very strong there and suddenly the idea came; I can get a woman’s attention finally!

That bombed. Desperately I decided to “buy” a woman’s attention. I went to fancy Hotel where they had such thing; Escorts. I felt powerful because I could have sex and be a man.

I met her then at her place and she was an angel. Very beautiful girl indeed and she talked to me. I was so happy. Then as the night passed and her duty to satisfy my needs came, I saw her eyes, sad eyes.

“Please stop” I said.

I asked her when was her last real meal. How she was sleeping, how did she feel? She was barely eating and not sleeping well. Then it became about her sharing her life story. How she disappointed her family and ran away crying. She felt alone and scared.

Then she went back to being an Escort and wanted to begin a physical session but I could not. There was a girl inside still, feeling broken and alone; just like me.

Yes, she had sex, that was her job but that didn’t make her a Woman. She then told me “ can you please hold me?” I did so and she teared up, so did I

We were both in the same predicament. Just wanted to be listened to, held, protected. I told her she needs to call her parents. It’s okay to be lost but don’t lose your family. I knew they loved her. She followed my advice.

The next day when I went to find her at the Hotel, the concierge smiled at me “oh you liked her huh? A total bombshell no? She left I’m afraid. She said she had to go back home. She made that phone call.

So many times we think it’s sex that we seek but it’s far more that that. We want to feel that someone is there willing to hear our vulnerabilities and be held, loved, that’s all.

So I didn’t lose my virginity then. In fact I was 34 until I “lost” it. It was with someone who understood my fears, my tears, and insecurities. She and I became more than sex partners. We loved each other!

  • Thank you for sharing that story. It takes courage to be vulnerable to strangers.

I hope it helps you to know that a lot of young people these days push back against things that people say you have to do, have, or act like to "be a man" (or a woman). I have hope that in the future fewer and fewer young men will have grief and anxiety like you did, and will be able to see that what they have to offer is enough, just as they are. If more men can support them, even if it looks different than it used to be, that will help everyone, don't you think?

  • Thanks for sharing your story and the struggles you have went through. We forget sometimes that we all have been through different life experiences that has lead us to where we are today and has created different needs. I think we all need to feel safe and supported in the comforting arms of someone who cares.
It was very brave of you to share that with us and hope you enjoy many wonderful cuddles

  • Thank you for sharing, @SoulParaTodos. The way you interacted with her is how a man should be.

This is kind of like the experience of Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye,except there's a happy resolution (and she doesn't keep saying "like fun" as a catchphrase).

  • Beautiful story @SoulParaTodos , thank you for sharing brother. Hope all is well with you.

  • Wonderful life experience. ♥️ You changed her life and perhaps she changed your too. Thank you for sharing.

  • My history with women is different from yours, but I also have a tendency to overly value my attractiveness to women as a component of my self esteem. It's never come at the expense of having real human relationships with women, but I think it's not entirely healthy and I haven't been able to completely let it go. Sadly I foresee this being a challenge when I get a little older.

This was a touching story. Sadly, my belief from my own observations as a Latino is that toxic masculinity in Latino culture is even more prevalent today. I can’t really decide if what Latin trap artist Bad Bunny is doing is toxic or not but maybe that another conversation for another thread. Being so fluid with his fashion I don’t know if it’s misleading and fake or genius. But because of his chosen medium as far as music, he does in fact himself perpetuate alot of the toxic elements of the culture and it’s even more popular now. Number one on the billboards even. What does that say about society? Anyway I digres.

  • This was a very good thing you did @SoulParaTodos . I just hope she wasn't being trafficked and her family threatened by her traffickers.

  • Thank you for sharing that beautiful and vulnerable story, @SoulParaTodos. That was beautiful what you did.

You guys are awesome thank you. All this time I thought, well when I was younger, that one’s attractiveness is about a clothes I was wearing or the things I owned. I was taught that a man had to be secure all the time and because of that, the the alpha male. That to be a man is too have a list of girls that like to or you have sex with. That’s what my culture taught me and no one ever told me about what having sex was.

I had no idea that a man could have feelings and demonstrate them, that sometimes we are not secure. Even sometimes showing chairs because of a movie or some thing in life I can bring such emotion

It never crossed my mind that sometimes a man just wants to talk and be real about things of life that, one not need to have sex to communicate Or show emotion, I know it’s crazy but I went through, roughly 36 years of this

  • Cool story and life experience. Appealingly vulnerable :)

@SoulParaTodos Some of us learn a little late in life that it is ok to feel and express those feelings. Good luck in your continued personal growth.

  • So many societal deficits that are perpetuated on men in this world. It’s frightening how many people can relate and have felt these same thoughts. Makes me wonder what kind of world we live in and what we normalize. I’m ashamed to have shared many of these thoughts.

  • Along the same vein, it's no surprise to me that it happened during an anonymous one-time paid intimate encounter, where being vulnerable could not lead to future emotional abuse.

It's good that you found someone who you could do this with more than one time without pain. Hold onto that relationship like a treasure.

Oh guys. This happened over 38 years ago not last week lol.

  • @SoulParaTodos That made me snort. Have you found peace after 38 years?
