In case anyone needed to hear it

I know, just as you do, what is like to live so deep in that dark and lonely place, alone, lost, and silent that you not only have forgotten the warm sunlight, but you're not even sure it was real, that you didn't imaging it.

You're worth it. You are deserving and worthy of affection, attention, acknowledgement, and love... Even if you don't believe it, I'll believe it for you.

The entire purpose of life is to experience things, to suffer through them and to learn from them. You aren't alone. Reach out. If you need to vent, to talk about some victory or success but no one to share it with, want to talk about how good awful the lighting is in game of thrones season 8, reach out, I'm here.

I'm good at offering verbal cuddles.

For real though, the lighting on season 8... You can only see eyes and smiles... It's maddening!

  • Thank you for sharing and offering kind words.

  • The entire purpose of life is to experience things, to suffer through them and to learn from them.

The purpose of life is not to suffer. The purpose of life is to be happy. For more on this, check out the teachings of the Dalai Lama.

  • He deleted his account. I hope he’s ok.

  • I used to think that I couldn’t leave this world before game of thrones ended, but then I watched season 8 and now wish I was taken before I saw its conclusion. Life can be so cruel sometimes.

  • The purpose is life is to reproduce. The meaning of life is 42.

  • The purpose is life is to reproduce.

    Says who?

  • @FunCartel Says nature and/or biology. All lifeforms are driven by instinct to eat and procreate. Everything from single cell parameciums, to rabbits, to humans. Having opposable thumbs, or our ability to write poetry, or launch rockets into space doesn't negate this very basic fact. Does this actually have to be explained?

@Tom2019 Does it have to be explained that we possess consciousness and free will? Purpose as you define it is a social construct. It is also a patriarchal construct. By your definition, anyone who dies childless served no purpose. Moreover our carry capacity has been surpassed:

    https://worldpopulationhistory.org/carrying-capacity/

This is why many scientists are saying we are on a downward slope and accelerating to an end as a species.

  • @Tom2019 I actually agree with this. Procreation and learning what you learn when you have another being literally 100% dependent on you for survival, is the deepest purpose life has to offer. It applies meaning to literally everything you do. It explains why it’s important to be a loving caring individual. It’s not something that can be replicated by adopting an animal or becoming a social worker etc etc.

  • @Tom2019 Thank you for posting this

@Tom2019 I believe the thought on procreation being the purpose of life is purely anecdotal.

  • edited October 2022

@tinc That sounds like it is more about the parent than the child. The assertion that one needs a child to be a loving, caring person is ludicrous. I am amazed by this and I am sure social workers can attest to the many parents who should never have given birth. That is proof that you are either a loving, caring person before and after you have a child or you are just an evil SOB before and after you have a child. Reproduction is not the sole purpose of us as a species. I would argue that as the apex brings on this earth we should be the caretakers of the world. And we are failing miserably.

  • @Tom2019 I have no drive or instinct to have children. Am I dead?

  • Thank you @tinc

@FunCartel Yes, one has free will and can choose not to have children. But the overall purpose of life (which is an instinct, not a judgement) is to survive and spread. I don't believe the earth has a population limit. But we have a natural yearning to explore. We cannot remain only on this planet. I'm a huge advocate of space exploration.

  • Space exploration is for the wealthy and likely not a way to save the planet. Population growth is unsustainable. We are within less than 100 years of depleting some natural resources. Water will be the cause of political and economic strife and wars in ten years.

But of course it’s easier to bury one’s head in the sand of what was once a lake.

  • @BrianL Nope, you're not. Your posting on this forum indicates to me that you're very much alive.

  • I have no drive or instinct to have children. Am I dead?

    According to some.

  • @Tom2019 But you said the purpose of life is to reproduce, and that all lifeforms are driven by that instinct. Since I lack that instinct, either I'm dead, or not a lifeform. Which is it?

  • edited October 2022

@BrianL The much larger, broader purpose of life (ie, all species) is to reproduce. A single life may not fulfill that purpose for whatever reason. But if you've ever had sex, you've indulged that instinct. Obviously you're not dead, and unless you're a bot, you are obviously a lifeform.

This isn't complicated. Don't overthink it.

I'm beginning to wonder if someone posts a declaration that ice is cold, how many folks on here will want to argue about it?

  • edited October 2022

@Tom2019 You are confusing sexual drive with reproduction. If reproduction is the purpose yet people use condoms then it sure sounds like consciousness can satisfy sexual drive. And not everyone has a sexual drive as I am sure many in the community will explain to you.

I'm beginning to wonder if someone posts a declaration that ice is cold, how many folks on here will want to argue about it?

And I am beginning to wonder if someone posts a declaration that reproduction is the whole purpose of life and there is logical pushbacks on it, how many folks will say that opinion is fact and be dismissive of those who think otherwise—despite signs to the contrary.

Final thought—I remember when women were constantly told that reproduction was their sole purpose. I thought that might be a bigoted view that was extinct. Nope, just reworded differently.

@FunCartel Space exploration has nothing to do with saving the planet. Our planet doesn't need saving. It has been here for 4 billion years, and will be here for another 4 billion years--about the time our sun swells into a red giant, burns off our atmosphere, and turns our planet into a lifeless rock. At about that same time, the Andromeda galaxy will collide with our own and our solar system will be ripped apart.

We, on the other hand, certainly need to be saved from certain self-destructive fads, or we will most certainly fade away.

Environmental degradation is a fad? Interesting delusion.

And yes the planet will be here in the future but mankind won’t because of that thinking.

  • @FunCartel Interesting the personal insults: I'm delusional? I don't believe I've made any disparaging comments about anyone. We can disagree politely.

The environment has always been in flux. The planet was uninhabitable for the first few hundred million years of its existence. It was fiery, volcanic rock. Continents have shifted, oceans change, mountain tops end up at the bottom of the sea. Plant and animal species come and go. There is no permanence to the way the Earth is today.

And, yes, we can dismantle our civilization and return to stone-aged living if we choose. That would be unfortunate, but it wouldn't affect the Earth either way.

  • @FunCartel ~ I fricken love you man!! 🤜🤛

  • I feel like our purpose is to just not die, and even that is optional. I am currently succeeding at that, but I could do better.

  • edited October 2022

@Tom2019 ~ Don't you dare be selfish and call that a personal insult! You weren't tagged and that comment likely applies to multiple people reading all this, not just you.

Unless you were tagged then never mind. But still, share the sentiment.

Also ~ Who is the "we" making these choices?

  • @Charlie_Bear I believe not getting dead is a default setting within our aforementioned purpose. I'm glad to hear you're succeeding at that, and I wish you a long and prosperous life.

@quixotic_life Okay, fine. Tagged or not, I made a general reference to self-destructive fads, he interpreted that as dismissing environmental degradation, which he said was delusional. Probably I mistook that as an insult, but I'm not offended. I don't get offended or triggered. Just passionate.

Well, for instance, the "we" (but not me personally) is a large percentage of the population that want to get rid of hydro-carbons altogether under the guise of being green. This would set our society back tremendously. The ripple effect throughout all aspects of life--one thing leading to another--would negatively affect things that don't even occur to us at the moment.

  • @Tom2019 please detail the ripple effect. This sounds suspiciously ripped out of the fossil fuel industry playbook. Please lay it out how global warming isn’t real even though pretty much all of science is in agreement that it is real. You are speaking in very general terms. For example, the world’s weather being in flux is rather cavalier and overlooks how quickly and by how much temperatures have risen. We are on a catastrophic track that has not been seen since prehistoric times. Potable water levels are at all time lows around the world. If you want cataclysmic ripple effects then we can continue doing what we have always done. Forget Putin, environmental and economic strains coming down the road will give birth to the next world war if we continue to rationalize our rejection to make substantial changes.

But don’t take my word for it—here is a clear explanation from a year ago supported by science the UN and other global agencies:
