The first snow and some soup

I must admit, while I’m a fan of snow for the ✨aesthetics✨, being cold is not my favorite. Today on a work call I looked out my window and saw a few flecks of snow falling from the sky here in Chicago. It only lasted a minute or two, but I must finally come to terms with that fact that summer is truly gone.

That being stated, I would love to know your favorite soup/stew dishes for winter. Bonus points if you’re willing to share the recipe. 😋

    I am in Chicago and found out via Facebook it snowed this morning. I have not found a place that has it, yet pumpkin is a favorite fall soup. Otherwise won ton soup.

    @Bear i feel like pumpkin would be hard to find on menus, or only added occasionally, but I’ve seen some good pumpkin bisque recipes floating around social media.

    Won ton is always a yummy classic!

    @Artemis795 - Pumpkin soup may not be easy to find, but Butternut Squash soup might be similar, and is easy to find. This one is carried by many grocery stores.

    I also love the aesthetic without entirely relishing the cold. It’s still fairly moderate in the UK, no snow so far. A cold winters day calls for a beef and ale pie with a flaky pastry topping and a rich gravy replete with lardons, carrots, button mushrooms and baby onions. Ideally served in a country pub with a roaring fire and a few seasonal decorations

    @WriterGF garlic dill oil sounds fabulous. I like to make my own garlic chili oil, so I’ll have to try that as well.

    @GreatHornedOwl I’m very excited for it to be butternut squash season! I’m a big fan brown sage butter drizzle on top.

    @LondonHug I’ve never been in a pub with a roaring fireplace -America needs to take notes! 😅

    @OhioMike don’t forget the grilled cheese to dip it into!

    @Artemis795 A cup of oil, 10 cloves of garlic, crushed, and a cup of fresh dill. Cook on the stove for 10 minutes, then run through the blender or food processor.

    I love soup and stew! I love beef stew and beef stroganoff and I'm learning how to make minestrone and lentil soup. I also enjoy a good congee. Will post recipes later. Would like to try Mexican Pozole stew.

    Would love some pho or bon bue hue now or Korean tofu or fermented soybean stew.

    We should have a Fall event called Souper Fall Cuddles or Souper Cuddling Festival. We eat stew and cuddle til we fall into a haze and sleep.

    @Artemis795 - If you like Butternut Squash with brown sage butter, try it with brown sugar butter, seasoned with powered ginger, clove, and cinnamon. Go easy on the ginger. I'm thinking that next time, I'll try adding some some ground orange peel.

    I'm guessing that photo of the river in your profile was taken on March, 17. For the benefit of those who don't know, that green river isn't a massive algae bloom. In Chicago the river get dyed green on St. Patrick's day.

    @cylee1180 minestrone is my favorite cold weather soup! I don’t know why I’ve never attempted to make it, but you’ve got me inspired now.

    @GreatHornedOwl i never go easy on the ginger -especially in cold weather. I juice an orange and a bunch of ginger every morning to stave off the winter blues/illnesses. Hahaha.

    Yes, you’ve nailed it! Last year was my first time experiencing the river being dyed and man is it green!

    @Artemis795 I'm king of the Slow Cooker. I have 3 slow cookers and a Instant Pot. Plan on getting 1 or 2 more. Huge meal prep and quite simple.

    Next, would be Prince of the Purex containers. Lol

    @cylee1180 slow cookers are where it’s at! Being able to assemble it in the morning, then come home and not have to worry about cooking -amazing!

    This is what you are aiming for. There are a few restaurants and cocktail bars in Chicago with open fires but they are on a totally different scale to anything available in the uk 😀.

    I love soup! My favorite homemade ones are Italian Style Wedding and a good Borscht. I never used to like beets until I had a proper borscht, but it's so delicious and healthy!
