Has anyone here had the privilege of covering the famous Route 66 from beginning to end? Any stories or special places you remember seeing, visiting, as well as any diners / bars / spots?
You can’t drive it from beginning to end. They’re only a few stretches left primarily in the Southwest, but I have been on most of them living where I live now and living in Arizona and California as a kid. It isn’t even officially a Highway anymore.
I drove the most southbound route before, which stretches from Tenessee to LA. That was fun. I believe it was I-40.
@FunCartel that's a surprise to hear. I've been doing the road trips on on this particular website (haven't got to Route 66 yet) and the site indicates you can still do it from Chicago to Santa Monica. It gives a blow-by-blow, city-by-city description of the route. Granted, some parts of the original Route 66 have been relocated. Is this relocation what you are referring to? https://www.roadtripusa.com/route-66/
Yes. It is not the original 66. There whole swaths where there aren’t even roads close to the original routes. But there are sections:

66 did not go through Tennessee at all, and I-40 only has portions that touch 66, not all of it.
I always wanted to drive it also. I live in Chicago and there's a spot downtown that has a sign where it begins.
Fifty some odd years ago, when I lived in the south west suburbs of Chicago, I used to drive on, or rather on top of, Route 66 twice a day. It's just that in that area, Route 66 lies beneath Interstate 55.

You guys are right …. I can’t believe they didn’t preserve the entire route, and it sucks they decided to do this 1 year after I was born 🫤
Supposedly lots of haunted spots.

Really cool & spooky stuff @cylee1180 😅
@cuddles_ndream That's what you get for being born too late. Lol. I have been on a piece of the southwest part. Some of it is interesting; some of it is not.
@achetocuddle Smh @ me for wanting to make this trip for the last couple of years now only to find out the route was decommissioned 1 year after I was born lmao 🤣 😅🥺😭
@cuddles_ndream Nothing wrong with having big dreams. And you can't learn everything about big dreams in just a day or two. I think just driving interstate 40 from Nashville to the west coast is plenty interesting. I wish I had the energy to do it again. Fun times.
@achetocuddle Ty for always putting things into perspective & showing the positive side 🙏🏻 🌌 ☺️
@cuddles_ndream - Yeah! From what I hear, there's a northern cross country route, a central, and Southern route. Most beautiful was Coastal Highway 1 along the Pacific. Life is short, make it happen!
There was a good reason for paving over it. Putting an interstate highway on top of an existing highway was, ans still is, an least an order of magnitude less expensive than starting from scratch.
@cylee1180 - I'm going to have to disagree with you on that. I was stationed at Fort Ord (Moneray Bay), and I driven Hwy. 1. It doesn't begin to compare to Hwy. 212 (The Beartooth Hwy.) from Red Lodge, Montana, through northern Wyoming, and on to Cooke City Montanna, and on to Yellowstone. Yre west summit of the road is 10,947 ft. the views are spectacular.
@GreatHornedOwl Saved! I'll take your word for it. That'll be my next destination point ! Thanks. Never been to Montana and Wyoming.
After we exhaust Route 66, check out the Lincoln Highway. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_Highway
there are numerous Rte 66 videos on youtube.. some are well made, some aren't,
anyone here old enuff to rem' the tv series ?? ahh nostalgia for sure.. google it and you will see the series and click over to see what all streaming services carry it..
I think a town saying their road is Route 66 is like when burger joints say they are the home of the Worlds Greatest Hamburger. Nobody really argues the point.
@SleddRider if you know of a good YouTube video plz post If you don’t mind sharing
@dave31415 😅😂

Route 66 becomes Central Ave in Albuquerque, NM. It’s been the source of many of my adventures including tattoos and piercings. Hahaha
