People think I'm crazy. NEED interior design tips

I want to paint my room. But people think my set up is borderline psychotic I can't tell if they playing with me or serious

I decided on all red walls with black base boards and black ceiling with glow in the dark stars attached.... floor will be black and white and the doors will be yellow.

My co-workers my friends and family think my color set up is absolutely bonkers. Some think I may be a drug dealer or a descendants of Jeffrey dharma. They all pleaded with me to go with a light blue ir cobalt blue for the walls and o ly add red furniture or rugs. If I like red so much and to keep the doors white

Idk what yall.think any Interior designers out there?

  • Wouldnt worry about the Jeffrey Dahmer thing until you develop a taste for fava beans and Chianti.

  • It's you room. Do what you want with it.

  • Red induces hunger, so if you wanna gain some weight paint your walls red:)

I had this romantic kind of baroque wall paper burgundy red and gold in my dining room, and one of my walls was a burgundy I wanted to paint it red but everyone talk to me in the painting it to a dark red kind of like dried blood. I loved that room. But I think it’s good to paint one wall red. And then have accent colors on the other walls. Avoid green cause that’ll look Christmasy. I’m not sure what goes with red other than neutral colors. But I love colors in my house. I do think it’s a good idea to have red accents that’s probably good but I would look through books interior design. Especially where they have a lot of color. Let us know how it goes

@FutureHeart2023 do you've a software that you could make a what do you call it... a mockup of what that would look like? I'd be interested to see it.

I think that would be a crazy color combination and may get overwhelming especially if you happen to have a headache or not feel too good. Though if you're good with it and , I think you should go for it. Though probably make it a gradual process and see how it feels.

It's your room. My only concern would be if you want to invite someone and that may be a turn off to the person. Though if you don't care about it appealing to others and are ready to take whatever loss that may come with, have at it. It's really just colors after all and it may not matter all that much anyway.

PS. I noticed now you asked interior designers, I'm not an interior designer as of now and may or may not become one lol. So feel free to take my input with a couple of more grains of salt.

  • Whatever will give you peace while being in that room, do it!

  • do what makes you happy and if you don’t like it you can change it, it’s just some walls. and i’m pretty sure jeffery dahmer didn’t have red walls lol

    @Lovelight Yes!

I do graphic design, not interior design. Books, posters, etc. But in both kinds of design, clients come to us with ideas and it’s our job to actualize those ideas, not substitute ours for theirs. While different designers work in different ways, what I do is provide a mock-up with exactly what the client had in mind, along with alternatives. The alternatives might have subtle variations or major ones. Sometimes the client will like the first one. If so, end of story. Sometimes they will like one of the variations. Sometimes both the original and alternates will lead to more versions.

In this instance, I suggest you create a mock-up of what the room will look like after it’s painted, and even with furniture in place. There is DIY interior design software or you can hire someone. Fiverr.com has folks who will do the room alone for $5 and maybe $15 including the furniture. With that done you can make adjustments, try different reds, different yellows, and various kinds of stars. Or you might decide that what worked in your mind’s eye doesn’t quite work once you see it. Folks on Fiverr.com often include a certain number of changes as part of the price. Once you are satisfied with the mock, you can paint the room. Or decide not to.

I can only think of one reason why anybody might think you're crazy, and that is that if this comes out a bit too intense it's going to feel like you're eternally trapped inside a giant Belgian flag.

My living room walls are red. (The ceiling and fittings are white.) Red used to be a very fashionable colour for walls. Anybody who thinks there is anything actually wrong with red .... has some thinking - or at least reading - to do.

However, a black ceiling risks making the room feel a little oppressive. (It will make the ceiling feel low.) Furthermore, in my view the black fittings may distract from the 'night sky' effect you are trying to create. I would suggest a dark blue or indigo for the ceiling, and something entirely different for the fittings. It occurs to me that a different shade of yellow from the one used for the door might help bring the whole thing together.

If there is white on the floor it is going to be the lightest thing in the room and will catch and distract the eye. If this is what you want - hooray. But if you want the floor to be the centre of attention, why is the ceiling going to be so interesting?

I think what I'm saying is that I like the concept but I don't think it's finished yet.

  • You do you . I have strange toys and art scattered all over the place that is certainly weird to some . Just understand though that really intense colors and patterns might not be the best for relaxing your mind in so the long term plan of that you may wanna think over

  • So when you're talking about red and yellow, do you mean full on saturation, primary colors? Or is that what the people around you seem to think when you mention it? Because that sounds like a crazy plan to me too. And black and white thrown in there, that's a lot of contrast.

Get a sheet of paper and put these colors next to each other. Or if you must, a drawing program on a computer. Make a mood board. Try different values. See what two harsh colors do next to each other, and then what happens if you ad pastels. Don't throw primary colors at a wall without thinking, because that's crazy!

  • It’s been said before but do what makes you happy.

You do need to be okay what people might think of you for painting your space like that. But then again David Foster Wallace said, “You will become way less concerned with what other people think of you when you realize how seldom they do."

  • @FutureHeart2023 Red is a stimulating color but with the lights off the ceiling sounds awesome for relaxing and sleeping. I'm a big fan of wearing black and accenting it with red so I say go for it. It's only paint and its your bedroom so you're the only one who really needs to like it.

  • @MonkeyNeedsAHug wow this is amazing! Thank you for sharing. :)

  • This is interesting information all. Thank.you. yea I think I will do s concept room and see .ore visually what it looks like and uplaof it here here Ina. Few weeks

  • Unless this room is going to be used for cuddling, I don’t understand why it’s being asked. Soothing colors, and neutral tones are always best for relaxation. Generally speaking, the color red invokes anger and tension so if that’s the vibe you’re going for, go right ahead, but I wouldn’t recommend it for a bedroom, entry way, or main living area. The shade of red matters too! I wouldn’t go with a bright color that “pops” for those areas. I’d do kind of a deep, bold color. Good luck!

  • I am late to the discussion, but the post made me think about this: https://acrylgiessen.com/en/color-emotions/

There is a real riche for this. Hospitals and recovery spaces are being designed based on information about color and sound. Very cool concepts.

@FutureHeart2023 Good luck with your choices. Do what feels right for you.

My living room and kitchen area has nine different colors on the walls. Makes me feel happy as I scan the walls while having my morning coffee.

  • @FutureHeart2023 Friend, you be you. Unabashedly, unreservedly, unapologetically you be you & enjoy it. We can all stand to have a little here & a little there refined. That all comes in time. But if you want the red. Go with the red.
