  • I asked a person this recently: when you were a kid, think what you would do for $5. Then, as a teenager & you & your friends daring each other… what would you do for $50?

    $500?

    $5,000?

    $50,000?

    $5,000,000?

It keeps going. An interesting study in ethics.

@teddybear888 Ye, people's principles and morals and boundaries seem to have a price point. Humans want to survive, and money ensures survival to a degree.

Big money goes around the world
    Big money underground
Big money got a mighty voice
    Big money make no sound
Big money pull a million strings
    Big money hold the prize
Big money weave a mighty web
    Big money draw the flies
    Sometimes pushing people around
    Sometimes pulling out the rug
    Sometimes pushing all the buttons
    Sometimes pulling out the plug
It's the power and the glory
    It's a war in paradise
    A Cinderella story
On a tumble of the dice
Big money goes around the world
    Big money take a cruise
Big money leave a mighty wake
    Big money leave a bruise
Big money make a million dreams
    Big money spin big deals
Big money make a mighty head
    Big money spin big wheels
    Sometimes building ivory towers
    Sometimes knocking castles down
    Sometimes building you a stairway
    Lock you underground
    It's that old-time religion
It's the kingdom they would rule
    It's the fool on television
Getting paid to play the fool
It's the power and the glory
    It's a war in paradise
    A Cinderella story
On a tumble of the dice
Big money goes around the world
    Big money give and take
Big money done a power of good
    Big money make mistakes
Big money got a heavy hand
    Big money take control
Big money got a mean streak
    Big money got no soul

  • Interesting lyrics

The title of the thread is also similar to the first lyrics to a song that comes to my mind.
    "It's been said money talks
If so what does it say?
Four simple words we see every day"

It just says “bye bye “ to me….lol

  • Money speaks all languages, and it says "Worship me!"

  • It's probably saying "Please clean me!"

@lonelytauros, oh... you used their real names. Rush will always rock and I'm glad to have seen them several times, although I've always had a little trouble remembering the concert.

The answer to the question is - everyone has a price and money is the universal language.

For me, it says I have my needs met, now I can help others .

And those other four words @CSnMUS87 were not printed on paper money until the 1950s red scare.

  • @CSnMUS87 There is also the saying “Jn God We Trust, all others pay cash.”

Hard to put my trust in a fairy tale.

  • A friend of mine worked for “No Such Agency” many years ago. He told me they had a sign hanging from the ceiling in one of the massive server rooms which read “In God We Trust, (but we still monitor his communications)”.

  • @JohnR1972 I imagine God and the Tooth Fairy are both monitored closely by those people. Easier to spread misinformation if the carriers aren’t real.

But I still capitalize their names just in case I’m wrong.

  • @Lisa123 Why are notes and coins in the USA so dirty even straight from ATMs 😂

  • Institutionalized currency is the largest form of human enslavement ever to exist.

  • “I am the largest form of human enslavement ever to exist. I wonder why this isn’t obvious by now?”

  • @tinc that is true to an extent however money is just a tool its the welder of said tool who enslaves themselves. A shovel is only as useful as the person using it. Same with money

  • Money and I are not on speaking terms.

  • Mine usually says “you owe part of me to the government!”

And those other four words @CSnMUS87 were not printed on paper money until the 1950s red scare.

For what it's worth, "In God We Trust" has been on our coinage since at least 1878 - and at that time, coins were still made of money, whereas paper notes were acknowleged to be merely IOUs.

Oh, and my money does talk. It usually says "Your kid needs new shoes [or braces, or horse riding lessons, etc]"

  • It says "Hello, I'm here to pay all of your bills and take you to dinner! "

  • Piss off

@teddybear888 - Your study in ethics reminds me of an old joke, that is as much an ethics question, as it is a joke.

Man meets woman at a very ritzy cocktail party.
"Would you go to bed with me for $10.000?"
"Ooh! That's a lot of money. I sure would."
"I may be a little short this week. How about $1,000?)
"Hmm. That;s still a lot of money. Yes, I think I would."
    "How about $50"
"$50! What do you think I am?"
"We've already established that. Now, we're just haggling over the price."

Does everybody have a price? Or al least almost everybody?"

  • Sorry I am in a very poetry sharing mood today but reading some of the comments reminded me of something I wrote a few weeks ago about existence and meaning.

    Beauty is Fleeting
    And Power Corrupts
    Time isn't Real
    And Humans Self-Destruct

    People want Purpose
    A Meaning to it all
They Fight for it so hard
    It only makes them Fall

    What is Life?
    Why are we Here?
    Does our pain have Reason?
How do you let go of the Fear?

    Stomachs are Growling
    Our wallets are Empty
    The water is Tainted
    But there's Distractions aplenty

    Brother kills Brother
    As Countries wage War
    Why do we Crave Control
Do you know what's worth fighting for?

    What is Life?
    Why are we Here?
    There Must be a Reason
    Soon it will become clear

A lawyer was teaching an ethics class at a community college. On the first night of class, he told his students, we are all forced to make ethical decisions every day. Take for instance just earlier today, I had a woman stop by without an appointment. She said she needed legal advice so I talked to her for a while and answered her questions. When we were done talking, she asked me how much she owed me and I told her $200. She pulled 2 crisp $100 bills out of her purse, handed them to me and turned to leave.

As she was walking out of my office I noticed two bills were stuck together and she had actually handed me $300. That created an ethical dilemma for me. Should I keep that extra $100 for myself or split it with my partner?

  • Just going to get this out of the way now, this thread is NOT going to turn into a discussion about Pro prices. We already have a thread for that, which I've provided a link to above. Failure to abide by this will unfortunately result in this thread being locked. I don't want that, you don't want that, so let's not go there, alright? Cool.

  • @TheFriendlyFae wonderfully written 😊 I love poetry!
