@pmvines In his reference to John Wayne movies, Is it even remotely possible that @dave31415 was thinking of John Wayne's overall image as an All-American, patriotic, chivalrous, honorable, protector of women, and that he wasn't necessarily thinking of the several scenes in one or two movies where Wayne strayed from that good guy archetype?
Personally, I understand the gist of the John Wayne reference, and don't get too caught up in splitting hairs over some notable exceptions.

Let’s not forget that Wayne turned in people for the McCarthy witch hunt trials for being suspected communists that ruined the lives of many innocent people. Those turned into McCarthy by Wayne were later found to be innocent and McCarthy a drunk and an opportunist. Ironically, Wayne who loved to rant about American values, had engaged in what the Nazi Gestapo and the Russian KGB relied on—informants who gave names without proof and without real due process.

Separating an artists life and personality from the actual art that artist creates is a real challenge, but is (in my opinion) a needed skill in order to still enjoy art.

@CharlesInWI so true, but Wayne was someone who is very problematic in his life and on screen. He committed several acts of domestic assault on women to celluloid as well as infamously playing Genghis Kahn (he even earned a dubious mention in Wikipedia under “Whitewashing” for that).
In his private life he stated he believes in white supremacy, justified the stealing of land from Native Americans, stated that blacks should not have power until they understand responsibility, used the homophobic f word in interviews and to people casually, and while saying that women deserved equal pay for the same job he clarified that statement by saying but women can’t do most jobs.
John Wayne is a dinosaur. He is an icon to a past that celebrated white male entitlement’s world view while flippantly subjugating or ignoring any views or art indigenous groups, women, and those who are not white could offer.
Everything is not racist or sexist but for those who grumble sarcastically that everything is racist and sexist it is their way of dismissing factual evidence that unravels their views of idolatry, white supremacy, patriarchy, and honesty. Wayne said and did things that were horrible and I am very sure he did things that were admirable as well, but the worst thing one can do with history is ignore that which offends thee. Then you are lying to yourself.
