Nikola Tesla invented this as a means of wireless power transmission which never came. Now it's mostly used for science experiments and to just look cool. A small Tesla coil like the one I have produces voltages in the tens of thousands while a much larger one can do a few million volts.

It's high voltage, but low current. You'll feel a shock if you get zapped, but it's not lethal although it might burn your skin if you let it arc to it for more than a few seconds.
