My answer to your therapist is, "complete this assignment." I equate success with happiness, not winning. Failure isn't horrible; I never discount the wonderfulness of "failure," without those lessons, I wouldn't have my successes. My 25-year marriage ended, but I won't chalk it up to "failure," even though others try to. We're still great friends, we just knew it was done. And my journey since then has been incredible and so adventurous!
