Is [hugging a stranger while singing karaoke] creepy???

Okay... So I was at a recent karaoke event, belting out a song, and heard a fella behind me matching my song word for word. Thrilled, I turned and spotted him sitting nearby. Of course, I vigorously motioned for him to come up and join me!! He giggled, looked at his friend, grabbed some liquid courage and came up! :)

By this time, I'm THRILLED!!! He starts singing, hitting the notes, the inflections, and has the perfect voice for this particular song... I kind of just stood there, staring at him! lol Forgot to keep singing and everything!!! lol
Oh... We were singing Bob Seger's "Turn the Page." Toward the end, where the song really takes off and flies, the other singer and I were side-hugging and bellowing...

Here's my question: While I did enjoy the singing of the song, I was really having WAAAAAY MORE FUN, right then, having this singer squeezed to my side!!!!! lolol!!! I feel like since I know that I'd long since forgotten about Bob Seger, that I [was lost in the moment hugging this person while he sang.]

Is surreptitiously cuddling a person a form of my being creepy???? Because if it is, I'll just go back to only singing solo!!!!!

  • Sounds like you were in the moment!! Not creepy at all!! so often we don’t get to feel the affection of the world and when you did you lost track of the song and just enjoyed a persons presence and their connection with you. There’s nothing wrong with that there should be more of it. Of course, that’s just my opinion. I would’ve loved it.

  • No, that's just making a connection with a stranger. Perfectly normal.

Creepy is when one person insists on the hugging thing, even though it's obvious the connection hasn't been made.

  • That's what bars and alcohol are for, normies that don't cuddle. Maybe someday we'll have cuddle bars with healthier options.

  • I only think it’s creepy when it’s forced upon or taken without permission. But in cuddling i hope we are all in this together, like unity ;)

Sometimes you just need to be held or hold someone. It's only "creepy" if you make it about something other than cuddling!

  • Sounds like it was entirely mutual, so nope, not creepy at all.

OUCH!!! Please forgive!!! I'll be more careful from here on out! Promise!!

I'm soooo relieved by your kind responses!!! :)

We really WERE "in the moment," jack! We tore that song up!! The audience cheered and clapped! He hugged me (YAAAYYY!) and happily returned to his seat. I floated back over to my friends and he and I "air toasted" across the room!

I'd never allowed others to join me on songs before, so this was new for me. I'll still probably go back to singing solo, but hey, if someone WANTS to come join me, I'll certainly be considering it from now on!! lol

Hey, Bashful... I saw what you did there! Thank you! :)

  • This is such a neat experience, one that I would like to have. First I would have to get over being too shy to sing in front of a group. Had I been in that moment I would have done the same thing. And what a great song to sing to.

  • @Umoja years ago when I was working in a nursing home I think I was working in the activity department and a ambulance guy drop someone off and as he was walking through the recreation room, music was playing and he said to me would you dance with me? I said yes and we danced for the patients. It was such a fun time. I never forgot that. I’m so glad I didn’t say no, that’s weird . Its was perfectly normal, if you are living in the moment.

I know, right??? @achetocuddle , you've got a point about getting over being too shy to sing in front of a group of people--- that really IS the hardest part! lol But it helps to pretend that you're singing in the shower, alone, and staring ONLY at the screen with the lyrics! lol

Sometimes, the song makes you forget, too... "Turn the Page" is one of my favorites, as is "Sundown," by Gordon Lightfoot. "Harvest Moon" by Neil Young, and "Simple Man" by Lynyrd Skynyrd (hope I spelled that correctly! lol) make me forget that I'm in a room filled with people. Just love the FEEL of these two!

Now I'm wanting to go find a karaoke venue for each day of the week!!! :)

  • OMGOSH @Umoja what a fun experience!! I love it... and combining something so artistic with something so comforting sounds just delightful.

I love the freedom that cuddling brings but also the awareness of boundaries that would never have been adressed before this community and mindset. It is so lovely that you are thinking about YOUR boundaries as well as the other singer.

You are so stinking cute and I can't wait to hug your neck in OHIO!!

Come to think of it... I think we should find out if there is Karaoke at the hotel or closeby!! What a fun memory THAT would make alongside the Meet & Greet.

    😊😊😊

MY NECK IS WAITING, GLEEFULLY, FOR YOU!!!! lololol!!!
LOVE the idea of finding a karaoke spot for later in the evening--- I'll probably be hopped up on oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin by then, so yeah.... KARAOKE WOULD BE GREAT!!!

I felt better, since he chose to hug me afterwards... But I guess I have an over-active "guilt complex"! Either way, I'm hoping we CAN all get together and go sing our lungs out after the meet and greet!!!

I can't wait to meet you!

    Yes... I'm a @sillysassy groupie! lol

  • Its all about perceptions haha. You enjoyed it no. Non consensual yes !!

  • @KozyKim Totally agree. I would have liked that moment too. These kinds of moments are an important part of what life is about I think. Stop everything else and connect.

@Umoja I have overactive guilt complex also, lol. Too often afraid the other is not having enough fun. And Sundown is GREAT.

  • @Umoja, trust you gut in situations like these. What were your initial intentions? Were they to get physically close before the hugs started? If so, maybe a little creepy. Nonetheless, like others have said, the hugs sound like the were contextually appropriate, and that the experience of singing together sparked a natural feeling of closeness.

  • @achetocuddle, the most recent episode of the NPR Hidden Brain podcast is about the psycho-social phenomenon of drawing incorrect conclusions about what other people are thinking and what their opinions of us are. If we’re worried that the other person isn’t having fun or has a formed a low opinion of us, we’re often misjudged. What’s more is that they’re probably worried about the same thing! 🤯😂

@JL_Borges, that's the question I ended up asking myself! lol I actually had no intentions, originally, it was an impromptu thing. He was back there JAMMING on this song-- that I LOVE--- and it just seemed appropriate to include him!! So I feel better.. It was just such a surprise that we ended up side- to-side that way... and I really did just forget to sing for a minute! At the end, he squeezed me and I almost fainted! lol It ended well, so I think we're good!

    Thanks for the insight!

  • Yes karaoke is creepy.

  • [Deleted User]Umoja (deleted user)

@BoomerSpooner~ Don't make me jump on you... Just sayin'.. lol

  • Absolutely not!!! You made a bond with the person over the best thing in the world, music!!!! My best friend just noticed how every time I'm wearing an MCR item, we run into someone who says they love my shirt/jacket/hat/backpack, or whatever it is that I'm wearing, and then we both go in for a huge hug at the same time!! She said it's like it's own special family and she is just amazed at how often I get hugged from complete strangers!!!!!

Thank you for that! :) It's like that human-thing, wanting to belong to a tribe. That there are others who see the world kind of like you do, and it makes us feel included. LOVE your experience of this!

I got warm fuzzies from just reading that!

p.s., scribbles furiously, taking down notes about Marvel Comic apparel bringing happy, random hugs! lol
p.p.s., Wait. I'm old. What does MCR stand for???? I was thinking MCU, or the Marvel Comics Universe. Damn. Should have pulled down my glasses!! lololol!!! Thanks for sharing!
