1975 also proved to be an absolutely astonishing year if you were a Rush fan. The band played almost 150 shows and released not one but two albums that year! Fly By Night in February and then Caress of Steel in September. So happy 48th Birthday COS!

This is how this works.
If you do all your planting and seeding IN SPRING the plants and seeds won’t be as established as if they were planted out in FALL the previous year.
Additionally, all Native Wildflower seeds benefit from being sown in fall.
Many native wildflower seeds require a Cold Stratification to germinate. Which means they need to freeze repeatedly through the winter, in order for their seeds coating to be cracked open. They won’t sprout if sown in the spring. This is true for some non-native seeds too, like Poppy Flowers. Ornamental Poppy seeds will only germinate if shown in the fall or winter. They require cold stratification.
Even Native Wildflower species that DO NOT require a cold stratification to germinate, still do better if sown in the fall.
The summer - autumn is when native seeds naturally dry and fall onto the ground from the parent flowers.
Many native flower seeds, both annuals and perennials, actually germinate IN THE FALL and wait out the winter as a tiny little seedling.
They slowly grow out their root system during this time, so that in the spring they are ready to produce huge amounts of flowers.
If these same seeds are sown in the spring, they will actually end up being smaller, with fewer flowers, because they didn’t have as much time to grow out their roots.
Even most ANNUAL wildflower seeds do better when sown in the fall.
You can still always sow native annual seeds in the spring, but remember they will be smaller plants than if they had been able to germinate in the fall.
As we’ve mentioned in previous posts, planting out perennial native plant starts is also better to do in the fall.
By planting out a wildflower start in the fall, they have the entire fall, and winter to settle into the soil. Again, this results in more flowers in the spring & summer.
It’s common for people to scramble to sow and plant wildflowers in the spring and early summer. But this timing is too little too late. You’ll never end up with a riotous wildflower garden that way.
If you want a lot of flowers next spring/summer, then sow the seeds and plant the starts this fall.
