Public Social Media Usage.

It's 2023 and I understand that cell phones have become an essential part of our lives.
But when does it get to be rude.

The one thing I find rude is when someone watches Reels or TikTok (whatever it may be) aloud around others.

I watch those videos too but at low to no volume so I'm not disturbing others.

But I know of some people who just, no matter where they are and if tv or music is on, just play these videos aloud.

Are they being rude or am i?

    They're being rude. Same as walking through a crowd with a boom box on your shoulder in the 80's. 😆 Though at least that would be an audio-only experience that multiple people are actually likely to enjoy.

    Earbuds are a thing, peeps! If you want to hear the world around you for safety, just wear one. 🫡

    I was getting a pedicure in Utah recently (sparkly bluuuue 💙) and while it was a lovely place with phenomenal customer service from the nail techs, and it had hundreds of excellent reviews, one of the negative comments was that the owner was sitting around listening to Reels loudly on his phone. Guess what he was doing, my whole pedicure? 😆

    It’s pretty rude. Part of me is jealous of people who watch videos at full volume in a public place. They have a self worth that is far advanced beyond what mine will ever be. They believe they are important. Perhaps they were told that earbuds might damage their precious, beautiful, perfect ears. These people may also think that because they are so great other people should know and will like what they are listening to. People who play anything at volume through their phones without headphones have probably never been asked to consider the experience of anyone else besides themselves.

    So one of my family members does this and I started to take it personal cause she doesn't do this around friends or other family members, just around me.
    But if I say anything about her being on her phone, she turns it around on me that I'm always on my phone.

    I use to be on my cell HEAVY!! But as I have been trying to better myself and thus less phone time, especially when I'm with people

    @ShaneSchrute I think it's arrogance, not confidence. Not caring doesn't equate to healthy self-esteem.

    @Jova114 Big difference between being on your phone, being on your phone in a social setting, and being on your phone in a loud, selfish manner.

    I was being sardonic regarding the people who act in that way. I’m not really jealous of people whose arrogance makes them unaware of other people. While it isn’t healthy it’s certainly a form of self-esteem. :)

    @ShaneSchrute I certainly figured; still thought it worth a mention though, as it's so common in our culture to strive for confidence to a point that it's becoming interchangeable with arrogance, and plays into toxic masculinity. (A cultural complaint; I didn't find anything wrong with your comment, personally. 🙂)

    It just grinds my gears hearing loud videos, sometimes repeated because they want to comment on it.
    I can't understand how someone can do that and not think to themselves 'hey I might be being rude to those around me'

    But if it's someone talking, hearing it on repeat is so annoying.
    And a lot of content creators speak at a certain speed, to get as much info in as they can. But I find it ANNOYING!!!

    I have misophonia, literal hatred of sound. Sound makes me RAGE.
    I literally wrote an email to my manager today regarding a phone meeting we’re going to have tomorrow. I asked if people could not eat and talk at the same time “because it makes me want to hang myself”. Yes, I wrote that in an email to my boss. 🤣🤣🤷‍♀️

    @INurturePeace I feel your pain. Traffic noise, upstairs neighbors training for marathons, gum snapping, chewing, pen clicking, whistling, and paper crumpling are all triggers for me.

    @ShaneSchrute i agree with you about people who think everything they do is so cool that they just have to share it. So i was at a gas station recently and this young guy, a teenager, pulled up with loud pounding sound on.
    I don’t know what came over me, but I just walked back to his car and his window was down and I said Hey your music is my favorite, i listen to it all the time! Can you turn it up even louder so that everybody can hear how cool we are?
    He just stared at me for a second, and then he turned his music down, pretty sure he wouldn’t want to be associated with someone his grandparents age. my daughter said I’m lucky he didn’t shoot me and she’s right

    lol he probably thought I was crazy and just wanted to get away.
    At an upscale mall in Dallas, teenagers were hanging out there a lot so the management started playing classical music through the sound system for the whole mall, hoping to drive the kids away. Don’t know if it ever worked, but I thought it was a great idea!
