Creepy ways to profit from lonliness

  • Wow 😯 my mind is absolutely blown 🤯😱 I’ve never heard of any dating app(s) charging that much, smh that’s so discerning to see 🫣 and sounds like a violation of the other users rights. If they did not match or agree they share any interest in one another’s profile why go out of the way to still contact them just because you paid for a subscription …. that shouldn’t give people leeway to talk to individuals that aren’t reciprocating the same feelings !!!

    Sounds problematic to me for sure.

  • Most dating apps and sites don't really wanna match you with someone that's a good fit.
    Cause then you won't use said app/site anymore.

    @Jova114 Good reminder!
    It's a totally different topic but it makes me think of a certain company's cell phone design philosophy, but I digress.
    Time to delete those soul sucking "dating" apps! 😂

  • @DaveJA
    Its funny though cause I did meet my significant other on a dating site. But that was 11 years ago when it wasn't a real money making industry.

  • @Katota - Thank you for reminding me to go to FetLife to RSVP to my upcoming munches, lol.

    While it’s not a dating site, LinkedIn has a similar feature where you can pay for “premium” services. It’s not really worth the extra money.

    @Jova114 I've met others who had similar experiences. Guess the luck just wasn't in my favor. Oh well!

  • @Jova114 unless one is ethically non-monogamous 🤣 okcupid really was smart in embracing that, as they've become the top place for us polyam folk to meet dates outside of social groups.

    Perhaps I'm confused. This isnt a dating site so I'm not understanding the connection. Or even the nature of the post which seems a bit irrelevant to the title of the thread.

  • @RadiantHugs Exactly, it's exploitive. I've actually been talking about these types of issues the past day or two and prior to that have been contemplating creating a dating app someday. I feel that I'm becoming a lot more serious about it and that it is quite possibly my calling now. So I really hope I can get there.

    @Jova114

    Tell me about it! 😫

    Also, I'll just leave this here:

    i cough, cough, Phones? Don't worry y'all, it's just allergies, I'm not coming down with anything serious lol. 😅 😫

  • @PupNapoleon "Perhaps I'm confused. This isnt a dating site so I'm not understanding the connection. Or even the nature of the post which seems a bit irrelevant to the title of the thread."

    I've not seen anything that says topics have to be strictly platonic cuddle related, if that were the case pretty sure the forum would become dead a century ago. There are so many topics not relating to cuddling that are discussed. :)

  • [Deleted User]DaveJA (deleted user)

    @PupNapoleon To echo and build on what @Lovelight said, there's even a thread dedicated to Memes!

  • Sounds like a “speed pass” for meeting gold diggers and providers more than anything else.

  • @DaveJA
    I'm sure you'll find a good one man. I'm rooting for ya!

    @cuddlefaery
    Lol OkCupid is actually where I met my s/o.
    And even there it said we were better as friends then a couple lol

    @Lovelight
    Awww
    🤗🤗🤗
    You too will find a good one!

  • I am starting to believe that the dating apps are like Ashley Madison, in that 4 of 5 profiles seems to be fake or spammers.

  • @TNNative
    Lmaoooo @ Ashley Madison
    I remember wasting time on that site lol

  • edited October 2023

    @TNNative Ashley Madison! lol I just heard about that recently. lol I'm so naive.

    @Jova114 I need to know what that's like . lol

    Personally, I don't have an issue with Tinder or any dating apps. They leverage premium memberships not for the average schmo, but for executive types with hoards of expendable income to feel that "VIP status." Cheers to them for leveraging capitalism and personally I think cuddlers should consider VIP packages too bc it's all about adding value and exclusiveness and perks that sometimes get pple to open their wallets (or venmo or cash app).

    Do I use them ? Sure. I've met a few partners and prospects there before. I use bumble, coffee meets bagel , and okcupid (free memberships). They are not my only outlets and shouldn't for above reasons , but I also Latin dance, platonic cuddle , and if I had more time I'd attend meetup groups. I think dating apps are part of the kaleidoscope of socializing and meeting people.

    Do I think that dating apps does harm to men and women on a systemic level? Probably, but nothing will change as long as social media, phone usage, and profiting off that that (aka- capitalism) exists). Capitalism is about the end goal: $$. Nothing else matters. I'd like to have a different system, but for now, if nothing better comes along then dating apps are here to stay.

    I have been intrigued in the past w adult oriented summer camps (zero tech - cabins, campfires , obstacle courses, etc.) and singles cruises but hadn't tried it. At least there is a market for in-person experiences. Also, I might try volunteering.

    Lastly, I was once on another app called "Howaboutwe" where you post an activity idea and people can comment if they want to do that with you and vice versa. Cool concept but I don't think it worked in practical usage. Dating apps and social media can separate pple moreso than bring them together sometimes.

  • @Lovelight I really like your contributions to the forum. Can I connect with you sometime?

  • edited October 2023

    Woah, I went through a wormhole about dating apps. Apparently , Howaboutwe got bought out after 4 years in 2014 to the parent company of Match and Okcupid.

    Also, Zuckerberg tried to launch one called Spark! which encouraged video dating and it flopped.

    Another one called Cuddlr which turned into Spoonr, which was a cuddling app. It also existed around 2014 but flopped after a year.

    Okcupid used to have an option where you basically agree to go on a random date/location they set up with a completely random person. I never tried it bc I don't even like pple I choose, why would I let others choose for me? haha

  • @BoomerSpooner 😂🤢😂🤢😂🤢😂. What did I just watch?! I think I’ll keep my expectations right where they are but I do understand the sentiment. 😂🤢😂🤢😂🤢

  • With @BoomerSpooner 's' Lowered Expectations' shares, I am suddenly reminded of these gems I found a couple of weeks ago. 🤣 But these were real, not satire. (Although at least one or two of them may have just been taking the piss. Lmaoooo)

  • Oh my goodness @BoomerSpooner ~ Every timr I sing that tag line I'm thoroughly amused and others just look at me with questioning side eyes through a face palm.

    And @Katota ~ Brilliant! 😅

    "unless one is ethically non-monogamous 🤣 okcupid really was smart in embracing that ~ @cuddlefaery

    True!! And Bumble too. I actually got to meet up with a few people (from both combined) who'd identified as such (and one who was lik pen pal concerned with my safety - or maybe my lack of for a minute??) Each knew full well I just wanted to pick their brains because I felt there were nuances I wasn't getting, and they were so incredibly cool about it!!

    I pretty much concluded that, although it seems like a natural and loving way of being, I'm not equipped with the emotional bandwidth I believe I'd need to cope with whatever dramas my insecurities kicked up. Plus, I'm just wee bit too selfish still.

  • Please refrain from discussing FetLife on here. While there is nothing wrong with using the site in general, pros cannot operate an account there and here concurrently. PLEASE do not argue this, it has been debated to death and the site admins are very firm on this stance.

  • @Minestrone101 "I really like your contributions to the forum. Can I connect with you sometime?"

    Thank you, you seem cool too. Sure, I just temporarily unmuted my account, so you can establish contact with me. 😊
