“Something touched me deep inside, the day the music died…
I knew I was out of luck, the day the music died…
I saw Satan laughing with delight, the day the music died…”
- American Pie by Don McLean, 1971
For me, it wasn’t the music that died but the “magic”. A while back I experienced a loss. Not the death of a loved one, more like the death of an ideal / belief, something that had been an integral part of me for years.
I don’t mean to be cryptic but the details are personal enough that I don’t want to share them in a public forum. What I can share is what it felt like. It reminded me of a more serious version of what happened when Toto pulled the curtain back and Dorothy discovered “The great and powerful Oz” was not what he appeared to be.
The rational / practical part of me knows I am much better off now that I’ve seen behind the curtain so I can make better decisions going forward based on truth rather than the illusion / self deception / tinted lenses through which I used to view the world. However, the idealistic / emotional part of me feels like a child who just learned Santa isn’t real.
Have you ever experienced the feeling of disillusionment by learning a deeply held belief was wrong? Did you have any mixed emotions? Any advice for catching and correcting flawed beliefs?
