Grieving a pet + best friend

[Deleted User]avebae (deleted user)

We added Charlie to our family when I was nine years old and my sister was two, so all of us grew up together. The past 4 years I've been out of the house, and in that time, he turned into an old man. I regret not seeing him often as I possibly could have.

He had a cough that started last month which we attributed to him being 14 years old. Last night, he deteriorated quickly and fainted twice. We made the decision to put him to sleep this morning as his breathing was incredibly labored and he could barely eat or stand. When we got to the vet, we were given the option to put him on heart medication, but feared he would have an adverse reaction or possibly suffer a heart attack. My baby was so tired.

I held him in his Scooby Doo blanket while he passed away in my arms. Those two minutes were the longest amount of time I've ever had to endure. I cried the entire two hour drive home. I couldn't stay at the house with his toys and food bowl there while he wasn't. While I'm happy he's no longer in pain, the pain I saw him in today will haunt me. I had him at my place for the summer three years ago and I'm cherishing those days even more now. I'm just making this post because he was the most loving dog I've ever met and I needed to share his sweet face. I miss him so much already. I saw a rainbow on my drive home, and it hadn't even rained today, so I think that was him telling me he made it safely.

  • I’m sorry about Charlie.
Pets are true angels on earth.

  • My deepest condolences for your loss. They are truly a member of our family and it's so hard to move forward after the loss of a pet you grew up with.

  • 🥺 warmest and gentlest of hugs

My thoughts are with you. This is not my art but I wanted to find something for you. It was initially green but I saw you were wearing blue in one of your pictures so I edited it to hopefully be something you like. It reminded me of your sweet Charlie. 🫂

  • It's always hard, but you will always have the good times and he had you with him right there at the end.

  • @avebae I am deeply sorry for your loss . You gave Charlie a special place in your heart and he enjoyed a wonderful life full of love. I know that was very meaningful to him. He will be in your heart and your head for as long as you live. May those memories be full of joy. May your heart be full of love. Time makes the wounds of grief more bearable, and this too will take time . Peace be with you 🤗

It's a beautiful thing to share love with a pet and one of the saddest things when they cross over. In my adult life I have had to put a cat down (while scritching him) and had another die in my lap. It really means something to be present in their final moments. Your Charlie looks like a sweetheart.

  • It is so hard to lose a beloved pet, but also very rewarding to know that you gave them a long and happy life. I'm sure little Charlie loved his people as much as you loved him. Take solace in the knowledge that his last moments were as peaceful and happy as was possible under the circumstances.

My cat passed away on December 9. His name was "Tank". It was the hardest thing to endure. . He woke me up at 3am and by 9am he was gone. I can still feel him my life. When I come home from work I keep looking for him. I have had many pets but this a first time I have grieved for a long time. We watched NFL football together. My sympathy goes out to you.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. I appreciate them more than you know. I can't sleep. Up looking at pictures from when he was a baby. I always said to people who met him that he was an old man who still acted like a puppy. He was always so energetic and loved to play. His last moments were the only time he ever showed his age. He was truly the best.

  • @avebae So cute! My brother's dog started off just like that, dark like a little Ewok as a puppy, and eventually lightening out to a gray...almost white if they let her fur grow out! 🤎🩶🤍

Thank you for sharing the sweet pictures. We're all here for you.

@SunsetSnuggles Thank you for sharing. That is so incredibly sweet. Blue is my favorite color 🩵🩵

@SonarEcho Thank you. My heart goes out to you as well. Tank looked like such a sweetheart. I can tell he loved you and watching football with you 🩷

  • @avebae my deepest sympathies for your loss. Charlie definitely has a lovely family. It definitely sounds like he made over the rainbow bridge.

Wrapping my arms around you and giving a big squishy hug.

  • Lost my boy last January. This is the first Xmas without my best bud too. We also opted for at home euth. It’s hard to shake the feeling of them fading away in your arms. He was 14, I adopted him at 18 and getting used to adult day-to-day life without him has been very hard. I feel for you. I don’t think it’s gotten ‘all better’, but I found rituals for honoring our time together, actually had pigment made from his ashes for a tattoo in feb.

It’s only easier in that I remember moments and feel happy for having had the moments, instead of sadness at feeling his absence. You did the right thing, but it sucks. I’m glad you got to experience that depth of care, it’s such a beautiful thing. ❤️‍🩹

  • @parker_12323 What a little cutie! 🖤 soft hugs So awesome about the tattoo ink, I wasn't aware of that option.
