My take so far: yikes.
I miss Amy Pond and Steven Moffat.
Moffat was a much better writer than showrunner.
Never seen a single episode of Dr. Who, actually. Should I add it to my list?

@SunsetSnuggles at its best, it's some of the very best TV ever written. To get a sense of the best, check out the episode "Blink." All you need to know for that is that The Doctor has a ship that travels in time and space, has someone who travels with him, and is very very smart.

Favorite episodes: Blink (for Scary Who) and Vincent and the Doctor (for Sentimental Who).

Yes, @WriterGF, I have. These two episodes were some of the worst television I have ever seen.
I started watching Doctor who when I was a teen. I had fortunately got burned out from it for a while. That I started watching they started back up and I got up to Peter Capaldi.
I only tune in for the theme music.
I stopped part way through the Jodie Whittaker era. Though I'm tempted to re-watch the whole Eccleston to Smith series' eventually.
@TxTom - I have the theme music to Dr. Who as the ring tone for my youngest daughter. We spent many hours together watching all the seasons from Eccleston through Matt Smith. We both started losing interest after a few episodes of Capaldi.
I don't understand that reference, but my impression of these first couple of episodes is "Douglas Adams Doctor Who". It feels so much like sci-fi parody, just as the "Hitchhiker's" stories were. For that matter, after just watching "The Devils Chord" last night, the season now feels like a Doctor Who parody.
Maybe the episodes will get better. I enjoyed all the 'New Who' series (yes, especially Peter Capaldi) up until Jody Whittaker . . . hate to say it, but while she played a very good Time Lord, she just never felt like The Doctor to me. The writing was also very poor on alot of her episodes, which in hindsight, could be why I never got the Doctor vibe from her.

Yes. There was a brief tennant return between Whittaker and Ncuti Gatwa who is the current doctor.
I had a twerp on tiktok literally tell me to kill myself for not liking the new episodes. People are dumb.

I’m seeing a pattern here, people didn’t like Jodie Whitaker Dr who because of sexism and now people aren’t liking the new doctor because of racism and they didn’t like a drag queen being prominently featured. Quite shocking for this community. I think Jodie was great and you shouldn’t hate the new doctor because of his race. Or at least I hope that’s not the case. I would be sad if people here have that attitude.
@supadupa You are telling me what I SHOULD like because of his race? Now wouldn't that be racist? Sorry, identity politics is not a substitute for good writing. For most of its history, Dr Who has had lousy special effects, and marginal acting. But what it had was good creative writing. If they had kept that while doing all this DEI stuff I'd probably still like it. Lecturing people about what they should want does not make it more desirable. Frankly, I am getting really tired of the bullying, and making people resent the DEI message is counterproductive.

One of my favorite YouTubers is the movie reviewer, “Critical Drinker”. He has made numerous videos about how Disney has ruined franchises by updating classic stories (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc.) for “modern audiences.” They are tearing down popular characters (Luke Skywalker is an alcoholic, has been and Indiana Jones is an old bumbling fool who needs to be saved multiple times by a young girl boss) to demonstrate how much better the new characters are than the established characters.
This is not unique to Disney. Modern movies seem to think a race or gender swap of a main character(s) equals good writing. It doesn’t.
And it is not a matter of sexism. Sigourney Weaver, Judy Dench, Linda Hamilton, Julia Roberts, Geena Davis, Jennifer Lawrence, and many, many other talented actresses have played strong lead roles in dramatic action movies. One of the things I appreciated the most about the Disney/Marvel original Black Panther movie a few years ago was the fact it had multiple strong female characters but they didn’t have to portray the strong male character as an idiot to show how much smarter all the women were. Wakanda was big enough to have strong, smart male and female characters - they didn’t have to diminish one to prop up the other.
And one last note, I quit watching Dr. Who a couple of episodes into Peter Capaldi’s stint as The Doctor so I guess that makes me “ageist” and/or “anti-white” since the only reason people quit watching a TV show is the age, sex, or skin color of a character (it couldn’t possibly have anything to do with the quality of the writing). 🙄
