Cicadas are arriving soon!

Imagine leaving your house to go for an afternoon walk and then not reappearing until 14 or 17 years later! I am so excited the Cicadas are returning---one wonders what goes through their mind. I know the experts say they all die off within weeks of returning but I like to think a few hardy ones survive just to reappear later! You may think I am nuts---and you would be right but I embrace my degraded mental state---as most positive people do! Just ---I Therese this discussion topic wouldn't have arisen! Lets just say this life-cycle would be the same for humans---how would you spend your time ? Would humans be missed during their absence (I I know my car would last much longer than past ones!) When in the warm embrace of another, for me, "time stands still." Even though the thought of an extended (I.e. cuddling session is appealing). I would be afraid of missing the event by falling asleep. Conversely if you can fall asleep in the arms of a stranger---that person possesses a beautiful gift! So what my point---1) take the time to appreciate what you have, and the world around, 2) don't judge other without critical judging yourself first, 3) and if you see a Cicda and become friends, hug them as they may not be around for long and do not have the services cuddle comfort to rely on!

  • the Cicadas are returning---one wonders what goes through their mind.

    My truck's windshield.

  • funny--poor bugs

  • I didn’t like cicadas, but last time they were out I picked one up. It stared at me and I stared at it back.. nodded and realized they’re not so bad.

  • say this life-cycle would be the same for humans---how would you spend your time ? Would humans be missed during their absence

A concept similar to this is common in sci-fi where a character is put into hypersleep while traversing the void of space. It raises some interesting speculation.

  • I wish I could be in hypersleep June thru August. I hate to be hot. Cicadas left middle Tennessee about a week ago. Hurray!

  • I've already started seeing a bunch, but I am curious as to how many more will be emerging in the next few weeks. They're already getting pretty loud, but I think they look cool. I would pick one up, but that loud buzzing might make me jump and I don't want to have them pee on me. lol

  • A few years ago there was supposed to be a brood where I lived, but if so, it was very small. Some of the broods have been dying out. I was looking forward to it, too. I haven't been in a cicada brood hatching since I was a kid.

  • would love to see replies to some of the other--deeper topics in the post

  • To reply to OP's deeper thoughts: While I don't embrace my degraded mental state (chronic depression) I don't diss myself over it. At least Lexapro helps. As well as making the most of the few good opportunities that come along.
I cut myself plenty of slack; I am as good as anyone, and better than quite a few I've run across. I wish that were not so. At the same time, I don't judge anyone more harshly than myself. A good policy.

I certainly do not care to become more acquainted with cicadas. It was very difficult to do yard work with them. And they are not easy to flick away like insects that fly well.

I don't have as much as some (no SO, not many people to rely on, not much fun) but I still really do appreciate what I do have - enough of everything to get by, lots of time to be well-rested, getting to be the helper more than needing help, and peace of mind.

I know this was not really what the OP had in mind probably, lol, but as deep and thoughtful as I could be about the topic and be honest/realistic.

I could never go to sleep during a cuddle because I don't sleep well anyway, but appreciate how special it is if someone can do that. Dennis, I have always been too excited to sleep during a cuddle. Also have had the benefit of some really good convo that would have done anything but lull me to sleep.

  • I look forward to the cicadas every summer. I know there's different year classes with different life cycles (13 and 17 years?) And this year we're supposed to get both groups. Lots of bugs. 😁

Let the Mississippi kites enjoy their feast!!

  • It was just last year that I went to the doctor and was diagnosed with tinnitus. I thought the constant buzzing in my ears was normal. The closest sound I can compare it to is cicadas: constant, loud, humming cicadas.
    They're still pretty cool.

  • Hi achetocuddle----I thought the self-reflection you posted was truly heartfelt and beautiful! I also like that despite "negative experiences," you keep living life with a positive attitude---one -step-at-a-time! I really appreciate you sharing your self-reflection as that was the intent of the post along with a little humor! Thank you---and I hope it helped to share!

  • The bugs of my childhood. It’s only a few. They smell. They can urinate up to 10 ft away. So many gross facts. Allegedly were not allowed on Noah’s Ark.

This poor kiddo was not having it. Oh he needs a hug. 🤗

  • nice picture--it kind of like a giant group cuddle!

  • Primordial soup cuddle. 🤗

They do cuddle quite well, above and below sea level.

Still, I persist to pass on cicada cuddles or toy Bionicles.

  • There are cicadas every summer in N. TX. I enjoy the sound - sounds like home, to me. Now, that photo of the swarm on a tree is frightening. Never seen anything like that.

As to disappearing and re-emerging after 17 years... I mean, it's not the same creature coming back, right? They're underground in a larval state and come out when grown, unless I'm mistaken. lol

But yes, life passes all too quickly, even with a human life span. Make it sweet for yourself and others!

  • Please tell me Bionicles is NOT part of your cuddle sessions!

  • Snuggly---you will never know unless you become part of the Cicada family---but to your point---yes---they are pretty much all dead after a few weeks---I just like to think differently thinking some survive only to revisit again!

  • yes---they are pretty much all dead after a few weeks

It never fails that I get choked up when I discover a cicada mass grave. All that protein gone forever and they are dipped in cocoa in some countries and fried in others.
