I miss "Once Upon a Time'" Bedtime Stories

Once upon a time, before the invention of the cell phone, chat rooms, etc....the only way to communicate to a friend, other by phone, you had to write a letter---gasp---I know--the horror.! Letter writing is really a lost art--for those never experiencing it --just is the greatest form of communication ever. On a cross country trip--I had a prior GF request a bed time letter detailing my adventures across the country . I always began those letters, "Once upon a time..." It's amazing how therapeutic it to express one's self . I used to write routinely write five pages letters---but "Once upon a time stories" can be as simple as a statement. For example, Once upon a time, I had hair and my toes weren't green......

What is your "once upon a time story" or statement:?

  • I love writing notes and mailing them. 💕

  • Same same! Despite not being 82 years old with 17 grandkids, I absolutely adore writing cards, and sending them through the mail. ✉️📫🤭

I even buy different stamps for different peeps...I have muscle cars for my brother and boyfriend, hummingbirds for my mom, Christmas ones for my Christmas cards, of course...

I send birthday cards to all my boyfriend's family and mine, along with my friends (a few of whom are cuddle friends). We send holiday cards to my mom all throughout the year, since getting mail has become one of her favorite things, since her stroke. We send Christmas cards to both our families, and my extended relatives. I loooove Christmas. ☃️

For years, I have been mailing my boyfriend a card or postcard from every state I visit. 🌎 Initially, I was traveling the country when we met...now we live together, and travel together most often, so it's a bit of a game for me to write the cards in the hotel while he's showering or something, and try my hardest to sneak them into a blue mailbox as we wander the cities. I love this tradition, and he's kept them all in a box. 💌

I deeply enjoy picking cards out for people I love, throughout the year. I've found "the perfect card" that represents someone's personality or interests, everywhere from museum gift shops to gas stations, Hallmark to dollar stores, pharmacies to tiny rural grocery stores. It's always a treat to hunt and find something special. 😍

@SunsetSnuggles ~ What a lovely and thoughtful "Card Ministry"!!! It's amazing how much the "little things" touch people so profoundly... I don't know which is more of a gift-- the card, or the fact that you took pains to choose and send the exactly right, loving card!! It makes them feel seen and valued!!!

@CuddleHugs01234 ~ I have a friend who shared a story about how very much it meant to him to receive letters from his favorite aunt. Even alllll of these years later, that memory still holds a charge for him, so I'm sure that those with whom you correspond are ACTIVELY appreciating your letters and cards. And they'll probably do so for always! :)

Once upon a time.. a stalwart Cuddle Knight sent a volley of arrows (messages) over the wall (profile) of The Dragon! The dragon, intrigued by the courage of the knight, bellowed down to him, "Show thyself, knight.. So that I may enjoy viewing my supper!!!"

The knight, in answer, sent yet another barrage of arrows across that wall, instead. Enraged at the knight's insolence, the dragon sprayed fire down toward the voice of this infidel. Encouraged, the knight stepped aside, allowing the foliage to burn, and laughed, aloud, at the dragon's fury!

The dragon, further incensed, took to the chase. The knight lured her to his trap (cuddle spot). Landing, she crawled around, on alert, searching for this meal who would be king..

The knight, knowing the dragon's deepest secret, karaoke-ed (still don't know how to rightly spell that!! lol) Paul Davis' song, "I Go Crazy," softly to the dragon as she neared his trap. Enthralled by the tenderness with which he sang, she found that her anger was quickly slipping away... along with her scales...her fangs...and her claws...

The knight continued singing to her, "Open Arms," by Journey, melted the remaining ice around her heart, and she suddenly found herself walking upright, on two legs as she approached the knight's trap..

Sensing her nearness, the knight stepped out, stripped of his armor, and smiling, kindly, at her, and continuing to sing softly to her, "Come Away with Me." Norah Jones' words filled her mind, strangely wonderful being sung in so deep a voice. Stepping closer, her eyes wide with uncertainty, the dragon awaited what must surely now be her disarmed fate. No armored scales, no fangs, no claws...

As he sang the last words of his beautiful song, the knight delivered her fate... And embraced her (in a cuddle)!!

    The End! lol

Yes! My great aunt sent my brother and I birthday cards our entire childhood, with a crisp $1 bill in them, every year. You might think well geez, that's a pathetic amount...but imagine, she's not my aunt, but my great aunt...the sister of my grandma.

I had only met her once when I was perhaps four, and she had children and grandchildren of her own. I'm sure that she sent these cards and dollar bills to all my cousins, as well...that would be thirteen of us. Did she also do this for the grandchildren of all her other sisters, and her brother? They came from a big family.

She made sure every year to choose a card that said "niece" on the front, and she would write in "great" before it, since we were a generation apart. 💖

It's just astounding to me, especially as an adult, that someone would take the time, care, and financial burden, to buy and send all these kids birthday cards and dollars, and keep track of our birthdays so faithfully, when we weren't even her own grandchildren. 💌

It definitely sticks with me. 🥰

  • Just like not truly wonderful slow dancing is---writing and receiving cards from someone who matters in your life is always special. I was a devil in HS and still am one--but I used school equipment to print fill-in the blank love letters that included memorable lines such as: "Dear _____, today at school lunch all I could think about was you and alka selzer." I equate that as being more personal than an email. Taking the time to send a personal message is as valuable as any gift!
