I believe this could be a great help to me, but I'm also scared. Looking for advice I guess.

Hi there Cuddlers, I first want to make it clear that I am not looking for a pity party, but simply to explain my past, my situation, and my fears, in hopes of getting some advice. Much of it is embarrassing to talk about to strangers, but this seems to be a pretty accepting community, so here goes. (Might be a long one)
I have had no intimate physical contact for my entire adult life. When I was young and dumb at 19, I was sure I had found the one, and ended up getting my heart ripped out and stomped on in a manner that doesn't really need to go into detail here. So with that I was out of the game for a while, went to college and focused on studying. Unfortunately in my final semester of school, I lost my childhood dog to kidney disease, and then my father to brain cancer. A few months later I had graduated from school and couldn't find a job, and then had to get knee surgery to fix some damage from my football playing days, and at that point, I think my brain had simply had enough and turned on me too.
I had developed a generalized anxiety disorder, which also came with a side of depression, and nowadays even some agoraphobia for dessert. I went from having turned my back on intimacy out of hurt, to doing it out of shame and feeling that I wasn't deserving of it, which only increased as I gained weight as a result of medications, not being able to leave the home often, and because I plain ate too much because it was one thing that felt good.
I'm starting to improve, my meds are doing a better job of stabilizing me (let me be clear I was never violent or hurtful, just sad and scare mostly), I have my own condo, I work full time from home, and I am losing weight slowly but surely, but a look at my profile pic will show that I've still a ways to go. And yet, these eighteen years later I have not felt the touch of another person, a kiss on the cheek from a friend maybe, but not even a lingering hug. So having seen this site and that many people seem to have received great benefits from cuddling, I decided to join up.
And now I am terrified. :# The anxiety seemingly screams at me, well you're just going to be rejected here too, or that even if someone is willing to spend some time with me that I'm just too weird for her to be able to enjoy it. I really am a loving person, and I crave some sort of intimacy in my life, and really when I think back... aaaaall the way back, sure, sex was nice, but it's the cuddling that I really miss, the feeling of another warm caring body against mine. So I really want to give this a shot, and really try to make it work, because I think it could possibly be a breakthrough for me, but I am terrified all the same.
I guess I'm just looking for advice. From people who have lived similar stories to mine, or cuddled with people who have lived similar stories to mine, on ways of trying to take away that fear and become more comfortable. And of course advice from everyone else is welcomed as well. There are no bad ideas here. (Please don't prove me wrong.) Anyways, thanks for reading, and hopefully for helping.

Mike

I've also had very little touch in my life. Probably more than you, but not by a lot. I don't think I am really qualified to give you advice, but I do have one thing to say.

Don't rush things and be patient with both who you're talking to and yourself. I have been on this site for almost a year now I think and it's only recently that I've really connected with someone. I think if you establish a good connection with someone where openness, honesty, and non-judgement are priorities then you will be able to relax a lot better.

    edit---
Oh, and not everyone is going to be a good match, and that's okay.

    Hi Mike,

I have been very guarded in receiving touch in my life because of a few things, an emotionally abusive relationship, had a very nice Eastern European mama who just didn't know how to really hug a kid , fear of rejection, fear of men, fear of getting overwhelmed, fear, fear, fear. I can hold space for others, I am a caregiver, caretaker by nature, but in my social and personal life, I prefer to stay to myself so as not to get hurt. For a very long time this meant not receiving the kind of touch that I needed and craved most -- being held, being nurtured, feeling safe.

I've found a solution that works for me. I get my 'me cuddles' as I call them, exclusively from Cuddle Parties and going to a professional cuddlist in my area as much as I can afford. This is less than once a month and yet brings tremendous benefits to my life. Even, and especially as a professional cuddlist myself, I find the space the facilitators and professionals hold to be sacred. It gives me complete permission to take care of my needs, communicate clearly, communicate with MY health and well being in mind.

The reason being, there is a guided process of establishing comfort level during every session, it can build on itself, but starts with the basics of communication about touch - yes/no exercises, practicing asking for what I want, practicing being asked and giving my authentic response. Because the safety of communication is the focus, the cuddles I get are always yummy and never scary. The certification process helps the professionals recognize the benefits of complete authenticity and practice exclusively authentic responses to clients' requests. As a client, I know that the cuddlist will only do what they are a hell yes to! This completely removes the worry about my cuddle partner saying 'yes' just to make me happy -- this is a HUGE deal for me.

So not speaking as a practitioner, but as a client of professional cuddlists -- I would start there if I were you. Learn the communication skills, practice finding your happy place in platonic touch, see how that feels. Baby steps. This will help you expand into communicating with other potential cuddle buddies on this site, perhaps will help you get out into the cuddle community to meet folks in person and will get you on your way to a happier and healthier you.

Wishing you all the best and many many cuddles ahead!

Well, having been intimate, I'm pretty sure you understand how the first time can be really awkward XD

And it's for that reason that getting a professional cuddler might help you out. The more you interact with women (or do anything outside your comfort zone for that matter), the more you will get better at it, and the less awkward it will be. That's the only way that you can improve in live with anything.

I would just advise you to use it as a stepping stone and not as a substitute for cuddling with an enthusiast or a date. I kind of made the mistake of paying too many pros and it hindered me from finding an actual partner. But, if you feel like it's your only option for the time being, then by all means do it!

  • @ignis "This site is a dating website"

It really isn't. I guess that was tongue in cheek, but it's very misleading to say.

There has been a lot of effort from many people here to communicate that this site is for platonic cuddling only -- not for anything sexual and not for dating. There is active discouragement of people who treat it that way.

People have their personal preferences of course, but there are many people here who don't primarily go after looks when deciding who they want to cuddle. Making a good connection with someone they feel safe and comfortable with and can have a good connection with is the main thing.

I think this site provides an awesome opportunity for like minded people to connect in the world of platonic cuddling.
I have met a lot of professionals through this site and let me tell you, all of them are awesome.
So getting help from a professional is an option to reduce anxiety.
    Happy cuddling:)

  • Thank you to everyone that replied here (yes, even Ignis lol) and sent me messages. I am feeling like this is a helpful route to go down. Now it's just a matter of finding people that are close by, don't have an empty profile, and haven't been inactive for months. Might be harder than I first thought. :o

  • Welcome! And yes, we are very open and supportive here - which is why I've stayed even though there's no cuddlers in my area on here. Haha But yes this site is a great community that are warmly accepting of the disinherited, lonely, and cuddle-starved. Especially online to boot, such a thing is rarer than hen's teeth.

As to your situation, I've shared some similarities. I was sexually assaulted in the 7th grade (unlawful strip search without probable cause, I was only 12 or so at the time), which has left me with trust issues, lack of confidence, low self-esteem, mild inferiority complex, negative views of sexuality, and has pretty much ruined me for sex (any sexual or even just sensual touch feels incredibly invasive). So yeah I've got some baggage too, haha.

And hey, its normal to be a bit apprehensive of cuddling at first. Society hasn't really even started to recognize touch starvation as a thing. You mention fear of cuddlers rejecting you or not thoroughly enjoying their side of the session. First, I would suggest pros as they should be more understanding and supportive of their clients...unless they're a poser just trying to make an easy buck. But yeah try to find a pro who is serious about their work. Although don't discount "free cuddlers" either.

Secondly, once you've found them start messaging them to kind of feel 'em out and make sure that
    A) its safe to meet up and that they aren't some psycho trying to lure victims - cant be too safe nowadays.

B ) ask them their experience, how long they been doing this, how and why they got into this (which helps determine if
they're legitimately a pro or not), if they've been doing this a while they may be more accommodating and at ease
themselves since they've do it all the time.

    C) see if they have a warm and accepting personality, that they have a good heart, see if there are any common interests
so that you have something to talk about should any unwanted or awkward silences that may come up in session.

    D) discuss in detail what sort of touch you like or don't like. For me personally, I really like having my forearms caressed
or rubbed. Its a very maternal, grounding sort of touch for me. It lets me know 'Hey, its okay I'm here for you.'
Touch is communication, so brainstorm about what you want to say and feel. Pro's will appreciate this greatly as
sometimes they meet their clients and ask what position or what type of touch they would like and the client stands
there quizzically, 'duh...I don't know.' So by having discussed and thought about HOW you want to cuddle, it shows
the pro that you value the session, aren't taking them for granted, and came prepared. It also reassures them that the
session wont be one-sided and that their (the pro's) needs will also be met, which in turn helps them to relax and
enjoy themselves too. Because don't forget, this is their time as well. They've taken time out of their busy schedule to
meet with you, so they're gonna want to get their cuddles too.

So when searching for a cuddler, be they pro or "free cuddle", keep the above mentioned things in mind. It should go a long way toward helping you (and this applies to everyone really), it should help you find a good fit. Its also a good idea to rotate between different cuddlers to avoid getting too attached and to protect from developing romantic feelings toward your cuddler.

If you're feeling cuddle-starved, this article has some really great tips to lessen the ache (and they actually work - Ive tried them myself... http://www.getrelationshipsright.com/need_touch/

Also try turning the AC a degree or two warmer than you normally set it. This increases blood circulation, making your skin more sensitive to touch, and you should notice a difference in about a week or two. I know it sounds stupid, and I thought so too at first, but it made a HUGE difference for me. Saves on your bill too. Also get heavier sheets (but make sure they still breathe), the heavier weight can trigger memories of being cuddled, which psycho-somatically makes your skin feel more satisfied. I myself have started wearing a robe over my jeans and t-shirt when I'm at home. Not all the time, but sometimes. The added weight makes it feel like someone constantly has their arm around me lovingly as I do laundry, dishes, take out the trash, etc. Again, these things sound stupid and feel really dumb and embarrassing at first, but they actually work tremendously!

You also mentioned anxiety and depression (to which I am no stranger either) and so here are some techniques that worked for me (given to me by my therapist years ago so these are legit, not just something looked up on a website):

Breathing exercises, there's an infinity of different patterns. Just Google for ideas, also look into something called Pranayama - but be sure what you're getting into because untrained, you can actually hurt yourself and possibly damage lung tissue. I don't do Pranayama myself, but I've heard others having success with it. But again, find a teacher or therapist and have them teach you if you do end up deciding to try it.

Self-talk and personal affirmations. This technique is very meta in that it takes you out of your head. I'm very empathic by nature, so the way I do it, is I imagine someone else having the same issues as me - and then in my mind I envision what I would say to that person or what I would do to console them, and then imagine someone else doing that for me. I know, my method is kinda hard to follow. Haha But things to say to yourself (or imagine someone else saying to you) - whichever way you want to do it, anyway here's an example:

"Its OKAY to have some sympathy for yourself. You DESERVE to feel loved. You are a selfless, caring, loving man. Having various issues and learning to live with them - it doesn't mean you're weak, it doesn't mean your selfish...it means you're HUMAN. And that's all anyone can ask of you. And you are a wonderful human at that."

Rather generalized I know, but you get the idea. Anyway, I hope everything works out for you, sir. If you ever need anything people are always here rooting for you...

  • Aw, @White_Knight, that was a lot of great advice!

  • Im just nice. I like helping others so, you're welcome. Hehe

  • @White_Knight - thanks for that link you gave, I've pretty much given up on connecting with anyone via this site so those tips will come in useful. In fact, I'm already following some of those ideas.

  • Definitely a lot if good advice. Except I don't agree with "they're gonna want to get their cuddles too" when talking about pros. You're paying them to cuddle you however makes you happy, within the confines of the service agreement and their own personal boundaries. As a client, you are never expected to or obligated to meet the pros cuddling needs. As a pro, it's great to find your own pro to meet on occasion if you have your own cuddling needs to be met :-)

  • I have a client who highly recommends the book The Upward Spiral (the counter to the idea of the downward spiral).

  • @ubergigglefritz I understand what you are saying, but I think @White_Knight is kind of on the same wavelength as me on this one. I would not feel as comfortable and happy with the session if I did not believe that the person I was cuddling with was enjoying it too. At this point for me, having been so long it may be helpful to cuddle in the way that THEY most feel comfortable, simply to re-introduce me to the feeling and learn about what works for me.

  • Oh, trust me, a good pro DOES really enjoy the cuddling =) (and you can pretty easily tell during the cuddle if they are enjoying it or not, and a good pro knows not to allow anything to happen that makes them uncomfortable in any way). I love cuddling with my clients, but it is about what they want or need and not me. That's the primary difference in cuddling a pro versus an enthusiast. Our job is to help you fulfill your needs, and if you don't know what you want, our job is to help guide you to figure out and find what you will enjoy =) If you're cuddling in a way where you're just doing whatever the pro wants and needs, then you shouldn't be paying them. But that's my opinion O:-)

  • lol so then I am unsure of whether I am looking for a pro or enthusiast at first, although the fact that there seem to be no one in my area for either group for my age range tells me my choice is moot. @ubergigglefritz I know you had offered to meet people halfway at an airbnb, which would be great because you seem awesome, but that would leave us with 210 miles to cover each, and I would be very interested to see the reaction of the American border guard when he asks me why I am entering the country and I tell him "To cuddle."

  • @mduncan50 I sympathize with your life. I do believe platonic cuddling would make a significant difference to your current state of mind. You are probably better off trying with a pro first. That's just my opinion.

  • Thank you @angela10 I appreciate both the sympathy and the advice.

  • I totally agree with @ubergigglefritz on this. I LOVE this job, but giving people what they need is what makes me happy as a pro. It’s the client’s time — I want them to use it for exactly what they want and need. And that makes me enjoy it and be happy. :)

  • Awe @White_Knight there are cuddlers not to far from you. There have to be. Heck I don’t consider myself too far from there to take a weekend trip or something.

  • Well Mike it sounds like Ashley may be the woman for the job. She has great reviews! You exposed yourself on here for all of us to see; you have better control over your anxiety than you may believe. You had rapid succession of tragedies but those are experiences that can grow us. We didn’t ask for them but hear we are thrust into them and dealing with it. I don’t mean to compare humans to automobiles but listen to this analogy: You are looking for a car so you go to “Carmax” because of the available variety. You know how much you can spend, let’s say $25000. Absolutely enough for a very nice new to you car. Your shopping list, what are some must haves - sporty, satellite radio, ac, power seats, oh and a sunroof! Well when you walk out of the showroom onto the lot you are met by the American sports car, the corvette! You look inside and it has everything you wanted and then some. You are feeling good about it until you look at the price tag. Well $25000 is not taking that car off of the lot, so feel let down and regret looking at it. The row behind it has some Camaro’s in it. Very sleek looking car but not to be let down again you check the price first, guess what it’s in your price range and has everything you were looking for. It’s no corvette but Camaro has the same function and effect. We aren’t all able to walk off the lot with a vette, but it doesn’t mean that we don’t deserve to have a nice car too. It starts with confidence in yourself, your faith and your eyes opening up to your surroundings. Rejection is no reason to isolate yourself, be open, everyone has experienced rejection, but take from the previous relationship the good and the bad. We hope to improve our selves and our choices, but you place yourself further behind the curb if you don’t put yourself out there. It’s life oh and the advice is free and I hope it helps ?

  • Unfortunately Ashley was speaking to White Knight, she is over 1300 miles away from me. But otherwise I appreciate the... advice? lol

  • At some point, I’d like to visit Toronto. It’s a 6 hour drive for me. :)

  • Lol sorry Mike. Hugs! I have family up there but haven’t been since they started requiring a passport.

  • I don't judge any other provider. I think all are important and essential. It is also essential to be comfortable with the other providers and offer no judgment, so as to get people to the correct place for meeting whatever needs they are looking to fulfill. You must be comfortable and not shame people so as to encourage honesty, which keeps everyone safe and happy.

  • As several comments had nothing to do with the original discussion topic, some of which were blatantly made to stir things up, I've removed those comments and any that were "feeding the trolls" along with warning those that started causing a problem in this discussion.

  • Hi OP,
I didn't read all of the comments so I apologize if I repeat anything, and i'm sure you've gotten some great feedback already. First, thank you for sharing here. Asking for help is very powerful, and i'm glad you've signed up and posted! If you were my client, I would tell you to take small steps first. There's no need to schedule and attend a cuddle immediately as proof of success; start slow. Visit some profiles, think about what you like and don't like in different people's descriptions and pictures, and make note of anyone you feel you'll click with based on their profiles. This may take a few days and is a great several first steps! Then, when you feel ready, pick 1 or 2 people whose profiles you liked and send short, introductory messages. I have people message me about a picture they saw or something they were reminded of or even my description of cuddling; these are great to start a conversation without the pressure to schedule something. Correspond with whoever responds to you for a little bit, and if you'd like to do a bit more, send a couple message out to some new people that you liked from your list.

After a bit of that, you might feel ready to start asking questions about the cuddle. Mention that you feel it would really help you but you're a bit nervous or anxious (this is entirely normal, btw. i realize you may have a bit more anxiety than others, but we all feel nervous so try not to psyche yourself out). I like hearing from people who are open about their feelings and intentions :) Ask for a description or more information; this is the most common first message I receive. Then, ask questions! If you think you might be interested in a cuddle with this person, ask for a phone call just to get to know them (5 min or so), and if a pro state that you'll book through here but are a little nervous and would like to hear their voice if they're up to it. Many won't be, and that's okay. Keep searching.

Once you feel ready to book, you can do so or request a public meet first. Pros will charge a bit for this typically, enthusiasts will probably want this, too, so it should be a win. After that, the actual cuddle, you can start small. Hold a hand or put an arm around them. Tell them what you need to feel comfortable; maybe just touching a foot with foot or bottom part of the leg crossing the other for just a small bit of touch. It's fine to start slowly and know that you can always take a break and leave the room, or leave altogether if you've had enough. Knowing there's an "out" is super helpful for me when I feel anxious so it might help you , as well. Another good tip is to wear or carry something that's meaningful to you and feels comforting. Perhaps a certain item of clothing or a scarf or a knick knack you can fit in your pocket (remove before a cuddle to prevent damage), etc. I've done this, and it can be under your clothing or over or anywhere that feels good and helps you be comfortable/empowered. (No weapons; this is not what I mean and increases risk for everyone).

Overall, don't put pressure on yourself. You're dipping in your toe and doing just a bit. Each little bit is a huge step and is an act of caring for yourself. I wish you tons of luck here and many happy (slowly geared up for) cuddles and penpals.

  • Thank you @PinkLipstick22 that was a very kind and helpful post.

  • @mduncan50, thank you. I'm so glad it helped!

  • I love this community!! Squee!

@mduncan50 Your ability to be this vulnerable and open-hearted, alone, will endear you to many, especially good pro cuddlers. It's incredible but true that you can enjoy a sincere, affectionate, cuddly connection with a stranger in the context of a paid session. "Cuddle work" is a very special thing. It's like care bears are real. I felt pretty isolated through my mid-20s. In college, I watched the original Care Bears movie and wept.

If you were in my area I would have pros to recommend.

  • Also a good idea when you do find some to cuddle with, do a public cuddle somewhere. Public cuddles are pretty safe I'd imagine since there's people around. May be a bit harder to relax depending on the person.

Maybe try a first-session cuddle on the couches at Starbucks? Thatd be good idea for 'get-to-know-ya' type cuddle. You could even just sit and talk about movies or music. It doesn't even have to be any touching. Just conversing in one's presence will help each other feel at ease.
