Bryan Adams wouldn’t have lasted long on here with his persistent talking of his favorite summer.
I actually have don't mind because it feels like a confidence thing. Look I'm not beautiful or pretty in a conventional way, but hey if a woman feels good about herself let her be. I'm not sure why this is such a bother
This forum is outside the realm of psychology and medicine. Even if you are all therapists, diagnosing strangers violates the Goldwater rule. In a 2017 guideline the American Medical Association asked that physicians refrain from making clinical diagnoses about any individuals they haven’t personally examined.
So. If someone is acting in a way that makes you think they might be a narcissist, don’t announcing it to us all just stay away from them.
So my take is people can name themselves whatever within the TOS and it's all good and fine. I don't think those with beautiful pretty etc usernames are doing it to be narcissists, but I have a feeling that a good chunk of them use that to attract people to their page and might do things that aren't necessarily platonic. Of course it's not 100% all who do that, but it does raise an eyebrow for me when I see that.
Oh and I forgot who mentioned it, but my mom always did say I was handsome growing up and through my life, and I believed her... until I started going to school and was told otherwise many times repeatedly by more than half the people I came in contact with. Kids in school, people on dating sites/apps, some exes, etc. So now I don't believe it most of the time, even though I try self-affirmations to work on it. Though I have talked to some few people that really say it along with other nice things and I cherish each time they do, because it helps me feel better about that. 😊 I guess touch and words of affirmation really are my top 2 things. I will say I believe my mom when she says I'm smart, though I doubted it when I struggled with some classes while earning my degree.
Anyway yeah I wouldn't dare to make my username handsome anything because I'd have a hard time believing it and wouldn't want to also give the wrong message or raise eyebrows.
Is this keeping you awake at night?
@Rezz 😂
Pro wrestling must be full of narcissists
Relax everyone, he is not talking about two pro cuddlers putting on a wrestling show.
@Erin_Elle_ If there's one thing that keeps me awake at night is that you haven't made it to Chicago yet.
@pmvines: Pro wrestling must be full of narcissists
Haha, absolutely. It is an interesting balancing act, being narcissistic and a bit selfish, but also self-aware and working within the reality that being able to get along with people to a reasonable degree is necessary. 😁
@ShaneSchrute in general, 1. Most people don't know the difference between a psychologist and psychiatrist. 2. Most people don't have a clue about The Goldwater Rule. Most don't even know there's a code of ethics. 3. Most people don't know that having "a degree in psychology" doesn't mean the person is a psychologist. A psychologist is more than just a degree from an accredited institution, it's also (at least) passing an exam, supervised experience and licensing.
@IronLemon @Katota My cat was very close to being named Bruce Leroy.
@pmvines Bruce Leroy would have definitely approved!😊👍
@Sooson Yes, this^^^ will be "popcorn munching response" option three. ☝️✌️
😜
It seems like a little bit of narcissisim is normal and relatively healthy. Pride, self confidence and empathy are good traits and can help us move forward with our lives. Extreme or excessive narcissism is another issue.
I originally though this post was all about me.
The Post is Titled - ** Attn: Narcissists**
We all clicked on it so what does that tell us about ourselves?
@BrianOcean
Maybe we're just all so vain....we all thought this post was about us
This post is weird. Especially in the context of this site, which mostly has men reaching out to women they think are attractive. The sheer amount of times I've received first messages from people saying "Hey beautiful" "Wow you're pretty" just makes this post kinda ridiculous.
If we weren't in a superficial world, I'd probably agree with you, but we are. Being conventionally attractive or just attractive to someone is what "sells" your image. Now, are there people on here not thinking that way? Of course! I'm just telling you, that's the general population on here.
I'll give you a comparison to turn some gears in your head: You're at a farmer's market and you see signs that say "The BEST Peaches", "Best Apple Pie", etc. Are you gonna question if they're narcissist for being confident in the flavor of their product they're trying to advertise and sell to you? That's what "beautiful" and "pretty" are there to do. It's to advertise a quality(which you may or may not agree with, but it doesn't matter) a lot of people who hire pros look for.
I have "Kuddly" in my username. Am I a narcissist for calling myself cuddly?😂
@RedFox16 - Awesome
The Great Carly Simon
One of the most underrated musicians of our day.
We will now await all the Warren Beatty references.
@KuddlyKoala -Your post is really well thought out and shows an impressive level of intelligence.
I think the OP's point was if you are Beautfiul or Sexy-people will notice it and it can come off as quite vain to label yourself that way.
It's an opinion that many share with him. Perhaps if the term narcissist was not included-people would probably agree.
Another point was made about A guy introducing himself in the same way. I will let you decide if that is a turnoff or not. My guess is most women would not find that charming to have a guy put adjectives before his name. It is a bad look and almost EVERY guy would agree that guys doing that are not going to be received well and nor would any one come to their defense. As @Morpheus alluded to -they would be ridiculed and mocked endlessly.
All people look different. Peaches and Apple Pie are just Peaches and Apple pie. At least as far as appearances go.
I think I can safely assume that the people who contact you with "Hey Beautfiul" or those type of greetings do so because you are obviously attractive. Not because you have a name that says you are.
This should be a light hearted discussion-nothing serious
@KuddlyKoala 👏👏👏
I get so effing tired of this women can do it but men can't argument. No, most people don't care about men having usernames that elude to their appearance or self confidence either. That's a stupid what about me scenario. Most people equally give no shits about that. It's a whiny comparison about a whiny topic that people whine about. Who cares.
The reason men can’t get away with it is because men wouldn’t use adjectives like beautiful, pretty, or gorgeous. Many would instead use buff, hung or bulging. These are words of affirmation as they look in the mirror made of magnifying glass.
@BrianOcean what's extra funny is that Carly came out recently and admitted it was about him....but only the 2nd verse. And then she said something to the effect of "I bet he thought the whole song was about him" 🤣😂🤣
As for the original post....I think it's fine to have some different things men and women can pull off. I think @KuddlyKoala phrased things perfectly. I just don't necessarily think it's something to really be upset about. But admittedly, I'm also in no place to judge what someone else is allowed to be upset by 🤷♀️
I mean, look at my name....one could assume I did the same thing by calling myself RedFox, but TBH I was playing off my hair color 🦊 and trying to be a little funny with the dual meaning of "fox".
Side note.... if anyone really wants to get into the psychology of what a narcissist is, I'm a huge nerd about all that and happen to be in a masters program to become a therapist....so just message me and we'll nerd out together about psychology and human nature !! 🤓🤓
Some men put knight, king, prince, etc. and it's not an issue.
I think a lot of men just feel entitled to quantifying the beauty of others, so if someone claims to be beautiful or attractive whilst not meeting their 'standards', it's an issue. I think that's the real narcissistic tendency when it comes to this issue. On second thought though, a lot of women also share that sentiment, it's widespread.
I'm not a fan of judging other people's appearances. Actions and character are more important to me.
The "what if they introduced themselves to you like that" hypothetical is ridiculous. No one would expect someone to introduce themselves by their online username. No one is going to introduce themselves as "GamerLord950".
Yep ill be SexyShonuff with the mean mug on point!
Thanks @Katota
Probably wear football pads at every cuddle too Thanks @pmvines
It’s interesting that not one single person who has defended women’s narcissistic choice of screen names, has a narcissistic screen name. Why don’t y’all go change your screen name and add god/goddess, prince/princess, king/queen, gorgeous, beautiful, handsome, pretty, cute or whatever other narcissistic adjective in solidarity. I promise that not one of you will do it 🤣
What's your definition of interesting @Morpheus ? Cuz I don't think that's what interesting means. I think you're using that verbage to trash talk others. By your definition....I find that interesting 🤔
And yes, people have defended the use of those names, but why would that mean they need to change theirs to something else because of that? 🤷♀️ Your comment doesn't make sense... Again, Just an excuse to trash talk people and try to stir the pot
I don’t think it’s a big deal at all, and perhaps people are overthinking it. Narcissistic actions are the actual bad things we should be looking out for
Confidence is attractive!!!
Whats interesting is how non victim incel apologists stir up shit with passive aggressive.comments to try to play the part of a pretend victim for the perceived purpose of creating discord. It's really not very clever nor is it all that interesting. It's manipulation disguised as innocence. It's like Steve Urkel asking did I do that
What a bold opinion to be coming from a pair of shorts!
