What unusual (weird) fear do you have?

    Serious-ish
    1. Birds.
    2. Butterflies landing on me.
    3. Murky water.

    Silly:
    1. Quick sand.
    2. Falling pianos.
    3. Cluster of things tightly/too closely together (holes, bugs that carry hundreds of babies on their backs, buttons, etc).

  • @VaniRae31

I'm guessing that clusters of pianos on a muddy beach would be a no-go for you?

    I just remembered…
People who are fearful secretive paranoid sketchy narrow-minded.
    I’m normally fearless.

    Ah...yes...

So I've been scared of moths since I was little...we lived on the edge of Colorado Springs, and the fields leading toward Kansas were filled with Miller moths. They would get inside the house and terrorize me at night. 😆

My issue with moths is that they are chaotic...most bugs will avoid humans, but moths will flap right into your face, and that freaks me out. 🫣

    Well...

I didn't realize until the one-way, entry-only, no exit doors locked behind me at Butterfly World in Florida, that my fear of moths also transferred to butterflies, when in an enclosed space with them. I genuinely had no idea.

I was instantly plastered with my back against the doors I couldn't go back through, and legit started hyperventilating and had a panic attack, right there in the atrium.

Thankfully, no one was around close enough to notice, as the people ahead had already moved down the path. Butterflies were free-flying everywhere and I was horrified thinking of them landing on my face.

I finally recovered and forced myself to start moving. I made myself go slow, and I took a lot of pictures as I worked through the atrium. When I finally got out, I enjoyed the rest of the facility, especially the huge parrots. 🦜

I was proud of myself for making it through, but I had a feeling I might never go back to such a place, so I shocked myself by deciding to go through the atrium a second time. I just really wanted to make sure that I could do it in the future, if I wanted...not just because those doors were locked behind me, the first time.

So yes...I'm apparently afraid of butterflies in enclosed spaces. 😐🦋😄

  • Biggest ones: Bees/Wasps/Hornets, Needles, Tornados, Dying, Centipedes

Not as big, but still sometimes bothers me: choking, talking to strangers on the phone, giving a speech in front of people, swallowing pills, holding babies, rollercoasters/drop rides (but not heights in general, just don't like being strapped in and pulled/forced to drop down), trying to think of conversation with new people and not be awkwardly quiet, especially if it's a date or someone I like.

  • [Deleted User]gem7 (deleted user)

@CSnMUS87 Bees and wasps are on my list also. I have had allergic reactions to stings.

  • [Deleted User]gem7 (deleted user)

@SunsetSnuggles I despise those miller moths. They hide in my sliding screen doors and come flying out when I open them. Ugh

  • @gem7
Evil creatures. shudder Even though, objectively, I think moths look fluffy and cute, up close...in pictures. 😜

I have a fear of candy (the fruity sticky ones) the texture looks horrible and I’m very uncomfortable with the smell. Each time my siblings have touched me (or threatened to) with candy I break down on the spot lol😅

  • [Deleted User]gem7 (deleted user)

@littlepeanut Lol. That is really unusual

  • [Deleted User]groundedhugs (deleted user)

Dark water! Like, if I can’t see what’s in the water, I will not get in.

  • @JoyfulHeart Alas no beach rendezvous for us.

@SunsetSnuggles My fear of butterflies stems from my older friend telling me they were deadly when I was like 6 after one had landed on me. She’d told me the most terrifying (to my 6 year old self) story about them that it made me break out into sweats when I’d see one afterwards. When I was 15 I’d found out she’d lied but by then it was too late. I can’t even remember the story she told me but its effects have been everlasting lmao. I can look at pictures or seem them from afar but if one gets close then it’s a wrap. 💀

@groundedhugs Same. Murky water is terrifying.

  • I'm terrified of the feeling of shaking, so don't shake me while holding me, because otherwise, I'll freak out, and I will hold that against you for the rest of my life.😱😭😞

I don't know if I'd call it unusual on the face of it, but I am very claustrophobic.

  • @HarleyGirlKate I wouldn't call that unusual. I'm also claustrophobic. And I panic if I can't move freely.

So glad the wide-bore MRI was invented. I couldn't do those tiny tubes.

  • edited September 2024

@IronLemon: Those MRI machines are tough. I had one recently and they had to heavily drug me, and even then it was a very long 20 minutes. Unfortunately, they didn't have one of the "open" ones available.

I'm glad my claustrophobia is only being in tight spaces and doesn't extend to not being able to move freely. That would have made wrestling a total no go. 😬

  • @VaniRae31
Aw man, that's awful. Children are so susceptible and it is so upsetting when anyone (including other kids) traumatizes them for laughs. It truly can cause lifelong issues.

  • Trypophobia. Honeycomb is a good example of this. shudders

“Trypophobia is an aversion to the sight of repetitive patterns or clusters of small holes or bumps. It is not officially recognized as a mental disorder, but may be diagnosed as a specific phobia if excessive fear and distress occur.“

    Turbulence on a plane
    Heights
    Fear of dying
    Snakes

  • Catching fingernails or toenails on anything... I get the shivers thinking about it! Any way I've seen some stuff! Always keep them cut super short and snag free.

  • Very weird but if you ever lived in nyc or currently do, you can understand👀

Commiting to holding your pee 🚽 to take the elevator to your designated floor (residence, and/or commercial) and the elevator gets stuck. I’ve seen it take roughly an hour to get people off an elevator and some having to climb out with the elevator between floors.

My fear is that bad boy getting stuck and I’d have to choose between tinkle myself or the corner (worse with people there too)😭😭😭💔

  • [Deleted User]DulceLuna (deleted user)

@groundedhugs same!!! If I can't see what's going around me while I'm in the water I panic very easily 😓 and even when then water is clear, I'm very nervous about anything touching my feet! Ugh 😫

  • Ooh, eyelid speculums... When I was little, there was a poster in my eye doctor's lobby about LASIK eye surgery, and it had a close-up of the prongs holding the eyelids open... 😱😵💀

If they could put me to sleep for it, I'd have done LASIK years ago, but there's no way I could lay down and watch a medieval torture device be put into my eye sockets. No amount of chill pills could calm me down enough for that. 🫣

For the curious...not for those who are squicky about eye stuff...

  • @SunsetSnuggles exact same. I will never have lasik because of being awake for it, and also the potential long term side effects. Me and my contacts get along just fine.

  • @itsDavina that is a pretty intense fear especially for a woman.

  • Grasshoppers and lady bugs lol

  • @bigben I’ve seen elevators stuck tooooo many times to not develop that fear 😭 thanks for understanding haha

  • @skyhighsugar I did not know there was a name for it, and I do not mind honeycomb but when I see something like 1,000s of sand crabs bubbling up at the beach that just grosses me out-

Also touching hair in the sink or the shower or on the floor, anyone’s - including mine, grosses me out

    Also speaking in public-

And meeting strangers in a public place,
Like meeting someone for a date - and going to a bar or a restaurant- looking around awkwardly hoping I’ll recognize the person,

Just tell them what you're wearing (a red skirt, etc.), then stand romantically overlooking a river, and wait for them to find you. 😉

I did this when I drove across the country from New York to Nevada to meet my boyfriend's family and spend Thanksgiving with them. 🤭 I didn't know the area, so I zoomed out on Google Maps, looked for blue (a water feature), and gave him the address for a place with a small lake.

I walked around the back of the buildings, and stood at the railing overlooking the lake, and just waited for him to approach me and hold me from behind. It was so perfect. 🥰

It also turned out that the building directly behind us was a wedding venue, and as we were leaving, a couple came by and the woman was like, "Oh, did you guys get marrrried here? 😍" And I was like, "No, we're not married." She looked embarrassed, and I couldn't help myself...

I said, "He hasn't asked me yet." and gave him a light whack on the shoulder. She looked so mortified, and so I told her I was just kidding, we don't believe in marriage. She laughed with relief, and then I had to go for just one more. I said, "Actually, he's my brother." The look on her face... 🤣😈💀

Poor thing, but the guy with her thought it was hysterical. 😏

Annnyway...there's my romantic and evil story for the month... 😇
