I was gifted over 10,000 books in grad school by a professor who retired and was my mentor. I donated a lot of them to inner city schools, some to a senior home for the indigent and others to a book store I liked. And I still had close to 6,000 books. I finally unloaded a ton at a few thrift stores for charity and wrote it off on taxes. Too many books are a fire hazard. I still have a lot so I am not hurting.
And I saved any first editions.
I would like to hear more about the ones you kept.
@achetocuddle Many of the ones I kept are of no account to anyone but me—mostly books on theory—from scientific theory to literary theory. But I do have some interesting ones that are non-theoretical. I have an 1872 Chemistry book, a signed first edition of Salman Rushdie’s “The Satanic Verses” (controversial but not even close to his best work), and my pride and joy—a first edition of George Eliot’s “The Mill on the Floss” (1860). The rest are a hodgepodge of modern literature, a few 19th century books (not first editions), a copy of the 40th anniversary of Jung’s “Psychology of the Unconscious”, a 19th century copy of Darwin’s “In the Origin of Species” and a signed copy of Dennis Lehane’s “Mystic River”. I have old books on building homes, ones on living off the grid from 80 years ago, and a recipe book on Native American home remedies. It is a wide array and while I hunted down the first editions, 90% of the kaleidoscope of books are comprised of ones he gifted me. He was a brilliant man who was a professor for over 40 years. He passed away years ago and I am deeply indebted to him.
At 3:52am I finished Requiem For A Dream. This book had me by my neck! 😭 It was so dang good! Definitely put me in a depressive state empathizing with the characters. Hopefully the next book I pull out of my TBR fishbowl is a positive one 🤞🏼 Another movie to add to my list as well 🥸
I mostly read sci-fi/fantasy.
Currently reading Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
Reading Book and Dagger, a history of how the OSS recruited college professors and librarians as spies in WWII.
Currently re-reading Hemingway's Across The River and Into The Trees.
I'm about a 1/4 of the way through A Samurai's Tale by Erik C. Haugaard, I reread this every couple of years, I think this will be my 4th time rereading it, next I'll be read the first book in the Tarzan series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first book in the Tarzan series is called "Tarzan of the Apes", I downloaded it for free off Project Gutenberg since it's in the public domain. I'm not big on reading fiction but I've been trying to read more besides stuff like philosophy or computer programming.
Ted Chiang’s Stories Of Your Life And Others. A compilation of his fantastic science fiction short stories.
Up next, Whalefall by Daniel Kraus. I’ve been told it’s like The Martian but in a whale. So I have to give that stupid idea a chance.
When the wind blows and the sequel the lake house by James Patterson are great reads😊
I just read Japan's Imperial Army: its Rise and Fall. Learned a lot that we didn't learn from school about how Japan ended up the way it did!
and ofc I have to recommend Gideon the Ninth, wonderful sci-fi series about lesbian space necromancers!
Fantasticland, as part of my book club.
Was an apocalyptic disaster story that took place in an amusement park/land of sorts.
Osho: Living Dangerously- Ordinary Enlightenment for Extraordinary Times (Masters of Wisdom)
I recently listened to Dead Beat by Jim Butcher. Tomorrow I start Eleanor & Park. By Rainbow Rowell.
Reread 1984 for school and it remains prophetic. Personally, my last read was the Wheel of Time series, again (again)...

The power broker is a great read. I just downloaded it the other day and mannnn
The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson
Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts — about an Australian bank robber and heroin addict who escapes from prison and flees to India. The book is based on the author's own experiences, is 95-98% true, offers wonderful insights into key lessons in life and love while providing an amazing depiction of life in Bombay (now Mumbai) in the 1980s. Highly recommend
Love my library card, I'm learning to read again. Phone in another room on do not disturb, no music even, just me and my book (or tablet for ebooks and books on tape).
Check to see if your library has lockers outside the building just like the amazon ones - you can place a hold, they'll put it in the locker, and you stop by, scan your card, and get your book even outside of normal hours.
Oh, and I'm reading Redshirts by John Scalzi (no spoilers please!)
Recent reads: Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (as read by Wil Wheaton)
On deck: Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes
I reread one of my favorite books, She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb. It's beautiful and sad and triumphant. Trigger warning for sexual abuse, eating disorders, and death.
I'm on Dresden Files : Proven Guilty.
Probably not the point of this thread, but reading "It Didn't Start with You," by Mark Wolynn, and "Women Who Run with Wolves," by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, made my ENTIRE LIFE better!!!!
Just got down with Animal Farm by George Orwell and oh my goodness, those damn pigs. The past three years I read a couple of book here and there but in May of this year i decided to put more effort into reading and since May I’ve read 33 books :,) Death of a Salesmen is up next and will be 34!!
